On the plus side, he uses Morbid Saint as the thumbnail for Thrash Metal, which speaks well of him. On the other hand, he 'introduced' me to gorenoise/Last Days of Humanity with a hate video where he kept calling it 'degenerate', which combined with the Genocide Organ t-shirt he's wearing is both hilarious and worrying. I've found it hard to take him seriously since then, but on  your recommendation I'll give these a watch.

Just listened to “Romance” by Fontaines D.C and oh my goooood, they always keep outdoing themselves… I’m loving it so much for me it’s a solid 9/10. I’ve seen them live June this year and I’ll be seeing them again in November and I’m so pumped now!!! My favourite band along Wolf Alice

On this 5 year Lanaversary of NFR! the gods above have decided to grace us with a new Nails album. A truly biblical occasion that shall not be taken lightly, as this band has been in indefinite hibernation for years now. A great and influential discography, this is family reunion or Saturday morning bowling music, very easy listening LOL.
 

And look at those variants :cumming2:

That’ll get the Swiftie juices flowing in anyone, with all those seggsy variants :crying5:. This whole album seems to follow suite sonically with their last one, with many of the songs reminding me of the song “God’s Cold Hands” on that record. Tracks 2-3 and 8-9 are my favorites right now, but the singles of the album are great too and stand out the most. And the album cover is done by the almighty Jeff Whitehead of Leviathan!!! What a slay! Another timeless classic :dance:

The best and most underrated band ever is releasing a live album soon. If you listen to it all of your ailments will be cured and your dick will grow like 2 inches (or whatever the feminine physiological equivalent is). CORPUS DELICTI is real goth post punk. Not that fucking weak ass pussy hot topic dog shit, but REAL fucking goth punk. Just look at them, they look like the goth kids from south park, so you know they have to be cool

Their live album entitled From Dust to Light - Live will release October 11th. From the track released so far, i can confirm this is the best live quality concert recording i’ve ever heard, and the musicianship is top of the line. Go do yourself a favor and buy the vinyl or CD, and for Christ's sake listen to it

I'm continuing this very interesting (to me) conversation here, because I'll feel less guilty than continuing to post very niche content in the 'What Are You Listening To' thread.

People who filed away their copies instead of laughing and throwing it out the window are now millionaires. Might or might not involve a musician and filmmaker who would later end up making videos for Lady Gaga (among a hundred others).

The Return…… - 9/10 - I used to stare at this record at the local hellhole record store, wondering what on earth it sounded like. It had a cool picture of the moon on it and not much else. When I finally heard it, it was of course close to perfection.

Under the Sign of the Black Mark - 9/10 - The record Quorthon said he hated the most, but what does he know. Great front cover featuring a shot 'stolen' during intermission of an opera. I hope the patrons who were refilling their drinks and buying peanuts are aware how close they were to true greatness.

Blood Fire Death - 9/10 - The first epic Bathory album, and although not quite a concept album, it still had the strongest overall sense of storytelling and felt like an actual opera.

Hammerheart - 10/10 - Quorthon changes label to Noise International, at the point when almost every other band was trying to leave them. They botched the long form video he wanted to make for it, but they couldn't kill the vibe of the record. One of those records that stands alone in the history of music, like the first Suicide record or Born To Die.

Twilight of the Gods - 9.5/10 - Really really good, but it's a part two of the perfection that was Hammerheart. I was trying to turn people at my school on to this record, but it was too progressive for the metal guys, and too metal for everyone else. Oddly, I never owned it, and to this day only stream it.

Requiem and Octagon - Even more oddly, I did buy Octagon on CD, because it was $5, and I thought, 'how bad can a Bathory record be for $5?' Talk about innocence lost. I don't even want to give it a grade. Apparently Requiem is similar, which was enough for me never to want to hear it.

Blood on Ice - 8/10 - A very good record that might have changed the world if it had come out in 1989. As it was, it came out when the world was in the thrall of black metal, and epic metal was a few years away from anyone caring about it again. In retrospect it's a great record, but it definitely slipped through the cracks.

Destroyer of Worlds - 7/10 - I completely missed this one, and any time I go back to it, I forget it about it straight away. I think I like it?

Nordland I and II - 9/10 - See my comments for Destroyer of Worlds, although these are much better. I need to go back and listen to them with 2024 ears instead of 2010 ears (when I first listened to these).

bonus review - the May 1984 sessions (Witchcraft and Satan My Master, from Juileum III) - 12/10 - Even though Quorthon shit talked Hellhammer in interviews, this is the greatest Bathory recording ever made, and it sounds just like the Swiss maniacs' demos. If there was a whole record like this, I would be in heaven. Or wherever.

To be honest, i forgot Octagon existed :deadbanana:. That album and Requiem are tucked away in my brain as the duds of the Bathory discography. Destroyer of Worlds to me came across as a poor mans Metallica, and honestly i think i could count the amount of times i’ve listened to that album on one hand, so it also could be considered a blunder i suppose. But everything else to me is legendary. Between the first wave black metal era and the viking era i’m definitley biased and have favorites. In the flesh i saw an actual yellow goat Bathory vinyl in possession of a vendor at a large show. For no less than $4000! I think he was just showing off, that or trying to scam someone in the case of it being fake. But regardless…


To be as objective as my opinion allows me:

Bathory: 10/10

The Return: 9/10

Sign of the Black Mark: 10/10

Blood Fire Death: 10/10

Hammerheart: 9/10

Twilight: 10/10

Requiem: No (MAYBE a 2/10 if i cared)

Octagon: Actually No

Blood on Ice: 9/10

Destroyer of World: No real opinion

Nordland I & II: 9/10


In the first wave era i think those albums are truly flawsless and a testament to the time. Probably the most influential albums in all of metal, both sound wise and aesthetically. Even if Venom coined the term “black metal” musically they were nothing more than a poor mans motorhead. Bathory truly invented the style of black metal. I think today these first 4 albums don’t get the credit they deserve. Saying you’re a fan of metal and not knowing Bathory is the equivalent of saying you’re a fan of horror movies and not knowing Friday the 13th or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Today somehow these modern day Hot Topic corny bands like My Chemical Romance and Black Veil Brides take the spotlight and tend to be the extent of knowledge people who claim to be “fans” of this genre have. Ok it doesn’t really matter that much, but still :deadbanana:. It’s hard to believe the self titled came out in 1983!!! Like holy shit, those songs are still dark and sinister today! I can’t imagine people hearing them for the first time back then. My favorite songs of this era are WAR and EQUIMANTHORN. Both absolute rippers. Call from the Grave and Enter the Eternal Fire are eternally classic in my mind as well. I go back and forth between Blood Fire Death and Under the Sign of the Black Mark being my favorite Bathory album. Under the Sign is just such a dark and intense album, while Blood Fire Death is more thematic, while both being in the same style.

 

As for the Viking era, to me the music has such a huge emphasis on theme and atmosphere now. While laying back on the darkness and putting much more into melody. It works so well to me because they execute it fully without any corny half measures, their still playing everything very well and fully. The epic tone of these album is the cherry on top. My favorite Viking era album is Twilight of the Gods. To me it’s the most entrancing and epic. I remember being totally captivated and in awe by it especially when first listening. It sold the whole style and all the viking era albums to me. Road to ASA Bay is my favorite song from this era. Also to note, i remember the Nordland albums being the most different sounding for this style. There are moments in those albums that execute the thrash thing they were going for in Requiem way better than they actually did when they tried.

 

Overall, pretty good band if i do say so myself :charli: of course this discussion happens AFTER i change my pfp away from them
