Iggy doesn't sing because she can't. She already tried being the next Britney Spears and failed, so she gets other people to sing for her. It's my opinion that "Fancy" was a success because of the hook Charli wrote and sung. "Black Widow" was a song Katy Perry wrote and gave away. Missy Elliott was an innovative rapper with crossover pop appeal. She would have features, but was also capable of singing her own hooks. SHE is a pop icon and a true, creative artist who was able to think outside the box. Iggy follows a simple formula of rapping elementary school lyrics and having some little-known pop singer sing her hooks since nothing else worked for her.

I honestly put so much respect in Charli for being an artist that tried to break some boundaries by being a non stereotypical pop artist, and being from a non-white background herself would try to say something in defense of Banks instead of wonder bread I**y. But I just looked up stuff about her and she never really took an interest in her Ugandan-Indian heritage until 2013. At this point that's really ignorant and I might not even buy Sucker or see a show unless she further explains this shit. She lived as a white person instead of learning about half of her family.

This is the one major problem I had with Charli. Whenever she's asked about her Indian heritage in interviews, she doesn't have much to say. I guess it's not really her fault if her mother didn't talk about it much, but it seems as if Charli grew up thinking of herself as just being white. She mentioned last year that she wanted to learn more about the Gujarati culture and incorporate the sounds of Indian music into her own, but I'm not sure if that's ever going to happen. Since then, she has done punk and straight pop and is planning to do urban and J-Pop influenced stuff in the future.

Charli has said before that she wish she had blonde, straight hair when she was younger. I understand that it's difficult growing up in a western society that values European beauty above others. I'm glad that she has sort of embraced her hair, but I'm disappointed that this doesn't cause her to empathize with other people of color especially considering that she witnessed her mother being called a racial slur.

I'm kinda behind on the whole Iggy mess, what exactly has she done to attract all this condemning? I'm aware of that "runaway slave master" line (the fact she claims that line was an homage to Kendrick Lamar is fucking hilarious) but is there more to it then that?

Iggy also made tweets offending blacks, Mexicans, Asians, Native Americans, and gays and lesbians. These tweets were made a few years ago, but she was in her 20s so she can't use the dumb teenager excuse. The biggest problem is that she has never apologized or shown remorse for them. She even offended some Aboriginal people by saying that they tear down their government houses because they prefer to sleep under the stars. I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about their culture, but I would expect Iggy to know a little bit about the indigenous peoples of her country. According to one person who responded to Iggy's comments, the Aboriginal people have long lived in huts and didn't just sleep under the stars. Their government houses are falling apart simply because they are in poor shape.

As a southerner of African American descent, I find Iggy's fake accent offensive. I don't even think her butt is real because it was flat just a few years ago. Iggy is a reminder of how white people would dress up in blackface long ago and would act out all of the offensive stereotypes of African Americans. Iggy's fake rapping accent is horrendous. Instead of being a half Ugandan Asian, half Scottish person who grew up in the UK trying to tell people why they shouldn't be offended by Iggy, Charli should be trying to understand why people are offended. Charli obviously has a very shallow understanding of hip hop and African American culture. She should either educate herself or stop pretending she knows better than the people who grew up in and started hip hop culture.

For the feminist Charli, Iggy has engaged in slut-shaming and has said that women either have fashion tits or porno tits. There is no in between. Well, I guess Charli has porno tits.

Her ass is fake. This is from her Pu$$y video in like 2011 or 2012.

A white feminist really. I'm really disappointed. Like I know Iggy helped your mainstream success a lot, but you don't owe her anything. Iggy would be a nobody without you too.

This is exactly what I feared about Charli, kinda worried that Marina is a typical white feminist as well.

She doesn't owe Iggy shit, everyone KNOWS that the best/catchiest part of Fancy was the hook, not the trashy verses. I'm so disappointed in Charli for supporting that atrocity, but I hope that she learns from the error of her ways and apologises (like Marina did regarding Girls).

I forgot to mention that Charli deleted my tweets one-by-one during that whole Snoop thing. I don't agree with Snoop threatening a woman who hasn't done anything to him personally, but I responded to Charli's tweets on celebrities bullying each other. I asked her how come she's willing to stand up for a superstar, but can't stand up for the small people who have been bullied by Iggy referring to her offensive tweets. I also told her to tell Iggy to stop being a one-person minstrel show. One after another, my tweets were removed, but a tweet that said that whites are the most discriminated against stayed up.  :deadbanana:

I think it's unfair for you guys to criticize how she identifies ethnically... Just because she's Indian doesn't mean she has to talk about it and embrace it. You don't know her personally, you don't know how she identifies or how much she knows about her heritage. As a POC she can choose to pass for white if she wants to. It's not really her fault if she was raised basically as a white girl. Not knowing she's Indian-Ugandan, no one would be able to tell.

She doesn't owe anything to you or anyone else concerning her ethnicity. That's giving her a responsibility she shouldn't have to have. It's up to her to explore her heritage if she wants to. I think it's kind of oppressive to tell POC they must act a certain way about their ethnicity but white people don't have to worry about it at all. She shouldn't be criticized for not being white...

White people in western society are surrounded by white culture everywhere they go. They don't have to make an effort to do anything. It's not fair, but POC have to put in a little more effort in the U.S., Canada, and Europe to learn about themselves because their histories aren't thoroughly covered in schools. Everyone should know where he/she comes from; it is important to know the past in order to understand the present. I don't believe people have to "act" their ethnicity. When you ignore a certain part of you in favor of passing for something you think is superior, then that amounts to self-hate.

You don't really get the meaning of us calling her a POC in the first place. It has nothing to do with her actually being white passing, it's much deeper than that. Being a POC myself it's pretty shameful that she doesn't say she is biracial because she would have to work a little harder to sell her brand. And in regards to the bold point - that adds to racial erasure when someone chooses to identify as white when they clearly are something else. Charli is a person of British Ugandan descent, that will always be a fact as long as she lives.

And if you're American you know for all intensive purposes she would've been known as mixed race. She is Asian (and depending how many generations behind that, could also be part African - but I don't expect her to claim to be black) and white.

I want to add that I don't think Charli is ashamed of being half Indian; otherwise, she wouldn't mention it. She could easily hide it. It could be possible that she has taken a great interest in learning more about Uganda and Indian culture in her adulthood. She just comes across as being disinterested. I don't think it's out of line to expect her to empathize with other people of color since she's so quick to defend a terrible, white rapper. It's not as if white people are the most oppressed and defenseless people on this planet and need her help the most.

She needs to acknowledge Banks' larger point. I understand the impulse to defend her friend's place in the rap industry (because that is under attack too, and that's not okay), but feminism is about more than supporting your friends. She needs to understand how excluded from feminist discourse some women of color are made to feel (in America at least, but probably elsewhere too).

Honestly I don't want to be reminded that my fav is a dumb bitch.

Shhh honestly what she said wasn't that bad. Regardless of whether you think Iggy is super problematic or not, Charli defending her does NOT make Charli racist. She's he friend, and knows her a lot better than we do and im willing to bet she genuinely does not believe Iggy is racist.

And don't even get me started on race issues and what is and is not racist... Just had the worst most heated argument with my conservative family because my grandpa just HAD to mention ferguson and the protests and literally I fought me against everyone else like a passionate crazy person and ended up storming off into my room... I am not the kind of person that gives racism a pass. I just really don't think Charli is that bad and even Iggy for that matter isn't the worst thing around. She's just trying to make a living, and hip hop has been around for so long now that I think it's unfair to say she's just profitng off of black peoples work. She makes her own music and hip hop has been around for so long now its ridiculous to say she can't make that kind of music. Rapping is her talent, and she should be allowed to profit from it without having to comment on every black rights issue immediately. Believe it or not Iggy probably is a lot busier than Azealia Banks...

I (and many others) don't think Charli is a racist? We just think her defending Iggy is stupid because she is among the minorities Iggy has made racist remarks against in the past. Charli is for a fact Indian, so it makes her look like she is defending Iggy's statements because she is a celebrity. The main problem black people have with her is the fact that she uses a fake accent equivalent of blackface to sell her records. She isn't a good writer, rapper or even a decent person - and we all know the reason she's famous, she got lucky from Fancy. Iggy is backed because she's an anomaly in the rap industry (when in fact she is a pop artist) and has done PLENTY of problematic things in the past. She just isn't very talented at all, so I'm just waiting for people to forget about her.

@@comeintomybedroom my thoughts exactly, a white person cannot justify what a POC can consider racism. That's like telling a woman what misogyny is.

Sorry, but :lmao:

Sorry but it's a matter of taste. Tbh, she's not amazing but she can rap better than me. And I'm willing to bet better than any of you. Compared to people as famous as her she seems talentless, but if she were just a small time girl Id think "this white chick can rap".

I draw, and I don't think I'm amazing, but I consider drawing my talent...

Edit: also it's so funny to go from one side of the race argument to the other lol. I was literally screaming and about to have an aneurism trying to explain racism to my white family who thinks racism just means hating someone because of their skin color. Now Im playing the ignorant white boy who doesn't understand why Iggy is the spawn of satan... It's kind of nice actually, to know that outside of my family there are people who actually understand race relations and im not the crazy one they make me out to be.

Lil Debbie is a much better rapper than Iggy tbh. And no even though I'm not a professional rapper, yes, I can actually rap any Iggy song. Her flow isn't complicated or difficult to develop.

And I don't think you're stupid, but since you are white you cannot justify what you believe to be racist, it's up to the oppressed group to decide what is racist.

It doesn't take much effort to write better lyrics than she can. I used to ghostwrite for people. Whether or not you think her flow is good is rather subjective, I guess. She doesn't know how to ride the beat, imo. Then, there is the problem of her sounding like a dying lawnmower that just ran over a cat.
