i don't listen to halsey, but i'm aware of what her latest album's about, and i think it's disgusting how dismissive and crass fantano's review of the album is, just wanted to say that

In Afraid of the Dark she sings like she's a scared sad child and I mean that in the best way possible. It actually scares me to feel that song.

She said in this interview that Life of the Spider was hardest to write. Her singing in that song is similarly so vulnerable and pained like in Afraid of the Dark. Im obsessed with them.

dont wanna sound harsh but i kind of understand what fantano and pitchfork meant when they said she has main character syndrome. the lyrics are genuinely awful and there's nothing artistic about them at all. 

 

i feel bad saying it cause i know she went through HELL and suffered a ton but the writing is terrible

what i had to say is:

 I never liked halsey or her music or. as a person, I even used to think she's a copycat and just a tumblr girl Lana Del Rey alt girl  wannabe

 

but this record changed my mind

she really convinced me as an artist, as a serious artist. The Great Impersonator is one of my top 10 best album of 2024 right now.

But that has always been Halsey though, ever since Badlands. I sort of get what they meant about “main character syndrome” but it’s just strange to point it out on this album.

To be fair Halsey has always been criticized for her poor writing skills, but it’s more noticeable now because of the themes IMO. 
 

Badland’s “bad” lyricism went well with the immature/childish/tumblr tone of the album so it was less noticeable. Now she’s talking about being on her deathbed and it’s just harder to gloss over imo

Lonely Is The Muse, Dog Years and Arsonist are easily some of my favourites finds this year and I wholeheartedly disagree. No fucking Chappell Roan, Sabrina Something, Charli vroom vroom, even Marina mother nature or Lana jimmy cocoa puff wrote anything like that lately. I don't give a *** about someone thinking she has a main character complex, she's her own explorer and it's her music and from what I've gathered she knows how to write something for people to relate to instead of coming up with tunes that she herself only makes the connections from, unlike some in the industry.

i think the writings just very direct and straight forward - and i don't think that makes them any less artistic or bad. Darwinism, Lonely Is the Muse, I Believe in Magic and The Great Impersonator are definitely the songs which's lyricsm hit the hardest for me. i'd never listened to halsey before, so the writing was very fresh and I was pleasantly surprised. i do understand musics all about subjectivity though, and I can understand your point of view.

 

i think something we can all agree on though is the concept and production on the album is absolutely insane. Dog Years, Arsonist, Lonely Is the Muse, Hometown, Panic Attack, literally all of them. it's so creative and despite the constant change in genre it feels very cohesive. this is how you make a multigenre album.
