imalbertgrr 36 Posted October 25, 2012 I'm surprised that this hasn't been a topic yet, but I would love to have a discussion about the meaning of Lana's songs. As I was listening to "Raise Me Up" I was thinking to myself what does she mean by this song.. what do you guys think about this song, and other songs?
Hundred Dollar Bill 21,803 Posted October 25, 2012 Lanalysis kind of covers the point of your post. Most of the song meanings are deciphered there.

PrettyBaby 2,219 Posted October 25, 2012 I think this has merits as its own more-general thread, for those of us who want to discuss possible meanings that aren't so intertwined with Lana/Lizzy's real-life relationships. I think Raise Me Up is about the ghost of a woman who died at the hand of (a) either her lover or herself, (b) either deliberately or by accident. She was not fond of his mama. And now she's back to haunt him.
teethclick 898 Posted October 25, 2012 Yeah, Lanalysis (as it says in the title) is "relating songs to known/assumed relationships", so this thread could be interresting too. 0 Quote last.fm

I agree there are things to discuss about the meanings of her songs besides relationships. But is the best place to discuss those in the lyrics threads for the songs, or do you think we need a thread like this? 0 Quote Stalking you has sorta become like my occupation. greymillenium 541 Posted October 25, 2012 I think Raise Me Up is about Lana going to the South and meeting her lover's family/mother and going to a haunted house and maybe doing a seance? She isn't the first girl to be brought home there so she doesn't have to censor herself. The second verse about vodoo could just be about her experiencing the certain charm that the South countryside has, especially being in the middle of nowhere.
imalbertgrr 36 Posted October 25, 2012 yeah I liked the idea of organizing the songs in albums and such and obviously only Lana knows what she meant when she wrote these songs but it's fun to interpret them. and i agree with RMU's meaning and i love it!

PrettyBaby 2,219 Posted November 8, 2012 Oops, maybe I should put these in spoiler tabs until everyone has a chance to obtain The Paradise Edition. Sorry! Cola: So having listened to "Cola," I'm now fairly confident that the infidelities referenced in that song and "Get Drunk" refer to using one substance to get off of another.
ednafrau 836 Posted November 8, 2012 So having listened to "Cola," I'm now fairly confident that the infidelities referenced in that song and "Get Drunk" refer to using one substance to get off another. wow! i hadn't thought about it that way, but it does make sense.
PrettyBaby 2,219 Posted November 8, 2012 Bel Air: On the surface, "Bel Air" seems to be about a celebrity stalker. So it's a lovely creepfest like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, right? But wait! We know how Lana feels about her inspirations. And we know how she feels about her fans. I think the cycle of inspiration is another form of paradise for Lana. I think this song is a love letter to her idols and her fans.
JhnMabius 175 Posted November 8, 2012 I think is about Cola her escaping with her lover, and him giving her oral sex in the car.
PrettyBaby 2,219 Posted November 8, 2012 That's so obvious, though... No, I'm kidding, you're probably right. And I confess to being led astray by the first round of guesses as to the lyrics... Harvey's in the sky with diamonds and he's making me crazy All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby So I was all like, "Like 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' = LSD! Oh wow! What the hell is Harvey? Does it matter? LSD must totally be Harvey's wife, i.e. they're both drugs!!!" Okay, so I know nothing of drug slang/culture, and the real lyrics are: Ah, he's in the sky with diamonds and he's making me crazy All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby So yeah. Real dude, probably.
PrettyBaby 2,219 Posted November 9, 2012 So yeah. Real dude, probably. ...but wait! I listened to it again and she totally says "Harvey!" Let me google this sucker... "Harvey in the sky with diamonds" ... we have one! Oh crap, it's my own post... "I'm missing something. I'm missing something small..." Well, we do need more songs about feminine desire, more than we need more songs about drugs. And Lana is definitely the artist to deliver... um, take... anyway, maybe this song is completely straightforward and I should just accept it at surface value. But then, why so many possible drug references? "We broke through to the other side" like Jim Morrison's "Break on through to the other side" for crying out loud! ............unless she means........... OH! "Tastes like pepsi cola" ... is like the creepy old dude saying it "tastes like candy," but she's not a creepy old dude, she's a woman on a mission! She's enticing her lover (maybe a creepy old dude) and she's doing it in a teasing way. WHY AM I SO SLOW! WHY AM I SUCH AN ANALYTICAL PERSON, BUT WITH WHEELS THAT TURN. SO. SLOWLY?!?!? I am a monster. A MONSTERRRRRRRRRRR!!! So she's not using sex as a metaphor for the paradise of drugs, she's using drugs as a metaphor for the paradise of sex. Got it. "Thanks, I just needed to say that out loud." Guys, you're not going to believe this, but -- you might wanna sit down -- guess what? COLA IS ABOUT ORAL SEX!!!!!
