Lithium liked a post in a topic by LittleFool in Ultraviolence - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
I saw this in the Ultraviolence music video comments on YouTube; thought it was interesting and thought I'd share, but I don't know if this is reaching, or personal interpretation in it's own right.
"Man, the symbolism behind this video...I totally understand it. Lots of complaining in there about the video being boring but the kids just don’t get it. The symbolism behind this video is really beautiful…I totally understand it. The symbolism of this song, why Lana wrote it, why she made the music video this way is all part of her story of Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson. She is a Morrison fan as most of you should know, she must know the story behind Jim’s relationship with girlfriend Pamela Courson. He whisked Pamela off her feet at 18 years old and pretty much “raised her up”. Jim was a brilliant poet and great singer for The Doors but he was also quite a womanizer and when Jim drank he could be brutally violent. Pamela could have been described as Deadly Nightshade or Poison Ivy for the way she treated men to get back at Jim. Lana’s lyrics describes their relationship perfectly especially this part: ” We could go back to New York, Loving you was really hard, We could go back to Woodstock, Where they don’t know who we are..” Loving Jim Morrison was EXTREMELY hard from everything I read over the years. Read any bio book on him. Then add Jim’s fame with The Doors which made it even harder for their relationship. Something else in this video that grabbed my attention was that Pam begged Jim to marry her. They always got the marriage license and have that ready to go but Jim would buckle up and never go through with it. In the end, they never married. Jim died of a heroin OD at the age of 27 years old. In his last Will he left everything to Pam. This is why Lana appears alone in this video wearing a 60’s style wedding dress. Lana has a very fragile look throughout the whole video. Very little makeup. White. Hair straight and flowing down. Reminiscent of the way Pam looked during the Bronson Caves photos. Like Pam, Lana is alone in the end of the video. She reached the alter and no one is there. Jim died. She’s alone. In real life, Pam died 3 years later of a heroin OD as well. She too was 27 years old. Thank you Lana for putting so much thought and effort into your videos. That’s why I always love her work. I hope her fans could just dig into them a little more then just scratching just the surface."

If one looks at Nina's youtubes and read the comments, one would see Lana covering Nina has increased Nina's totals in an amazing number.
One would think most of Lana's younger fans never heard of Nina and never would have found her videos until Lana did her songs
Which leads Nina to have new younger fans, who will go and purchase Nina's music and keep Nina immortal to a whole new generation (Lana brought me here you see all over the comments)
What could be bigger than getting Nina Simone a new generation of fans, and perhaps, entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
Same as how many kids looked into who in the world Lou Reed or Leonard Cohen or Walt Whitman or T.S. Eliot are.
as for politics, Lana being so into science is very political.
(being that in the US, most of the Republican party insists that there is no science at all, and all is a lie). etc.

Are you implying that daddy love and being a bad bitch on the side are not all we want and need?

This song really has gained a place in my heart... I just can't ignore the fact that it reminds me so fucking much of my ex best friend. "You are who you are..." no one will ever be better than him. The atmosphere of this song really captures how I felt when I lost him. I felt empty, fucking depressed... I thought I was the worst piece of bullshit in the whole world. "Isn't it strange that you're not here with me?" we suddenly stopped being friends... I suddently stopped talking to him. The Ground Control part gets me every fucking time... Trying to transmit... can you hear me?

The song was about Kim Kardashian this whole time...

Yeah. She's trying to "transmit" to him in space by turning on the lights and the TV (radio waves). Also increasing her energy usage to create a more intense signal. That's why she asks "can you hear me? Ground control to Major Tom, can you hear me all night long?" But like in Space Oddity, Major Tom has slipped away, and she cannot reach him now. She lost him in "space."

Along with David Bowie's "SPACE ODDITY" Lana has also sampled Nancy Sinatra's James Bond theme song "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE" in "TERRENCE LOVES YOU"
"You Only Live Twice"
You only live twice or so it seems
One life for yourself and one for your dreams
You drift through the years and life seems tame
Till one dream appears and love is it's name
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone
This dream is for you, so pay the price
Make one dream come true, you only live twice
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone
This dream is for you, so pay the price
Make one dream come true, you only live twice
Lana is really a genius in combining two songs that are as different as chalk and cheese and creating a brilliant new masterpiece. Take note Taylor Swift, this is how you sample other artists without losing your integrity.

Very interesting ! It would explain the "Major Tom" part and fit with the description of Lana "observing" people ...

I found this analysis on Genius.com in the comment section. It sheds a lot of light on who Terrence might be potentially?
"Terrence may be Terry Burns, Bowie’s step brother who committed suicide and suffered from mental illness. Bowie written many songs about his brother such as ‘Jump they say’ as well as introducing him to jazz. Hence, the lyrics ‘I’ve still got jazz when I’ve got those blues’. The line ‘I still get trashed baby when I hear your tunes’ could also relate to Bowie listening back on the songs he written about his step-brother. The song in all may be a tribute to Bowie and his brother, as well as being vague enough to capture grief and lament whilst still enjoying and holding on to memories, creating a song that can be universally understood and related to.".
But yeah, this is easilyyy the best song we've gotten from Honeymoon so far and it actually reignited my interest in the album. Not to mention that this is probably her most well written song since Old Money, at least to me.

I know I've mentioned it like three times already but I love the Bowie reference and I think it's great how she used it to symbolize the dying relationship

You are what you are
I don't matter to anyone
But Hollywood legends will never grow old
And though our love was hidden
Well, it will never grow cold
But I lost myself when I lost you
And I still got jazz when I've got those blues
And I lost myself when I lost you
And I still get trashed, darling, when I hear your tunes
But you are who you are
I won't change you for anything
For when you are crazy
I'll let you be bad
I'll never dare change thee to what you are not
But I lost myself when I lost you
But I still got jazz when I've got those blues
I lost myself and I lost you too
And I still get trashed, baby, when I hear your tunes
I put the radio on hold you tight in my mind
Isn't strange that you're not here with me
I'm putting all the light on and the television
Trying to transmit; can you hear me?
Ground control to Major Tom
Can you hear me all night long
Ground control to Major Tom
But I lost my self when I lost you
But I still got jazz when I've got the blues
I lost myself and I lost you too
And I still get trashed, honey, when I hear your tunes
Mm...
Mm...
Not as jazzy as I was expecting, but it's still beautiful, especially the bridge and the chorus. It's a bit heartbreaking. Some of the verses' melodies remind me of We Are the Champions (ha) mixed with I Want to Sing, which we know Lana loves to sing.

I have somehow come to terms with the "Soft Ice Cream" thing. Like it is SO American. I also love how naive and playful it sounds... And I think it is very random and unique how she connects this Italian lover boy / gangster with this food imagery, like she sings of Cacciatore and ice cream in the Chorus and then she's being theatrical again with "dying by the hand of a foreign man" and then again "Salvatore can wait, now it's time to eat soft ice cream" Hahah I love it! To me, this is the cleverest song on the album, lyric- and music-wise.

THIS. And there was also an interview Lana did where she said something about Francesco not letting her go to parties and making her stay home or something, and people reckon he is very controlling over Lana, and I think it's partly true judging by her comments about him in an interview she did.

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but Gods and Monsters has some of Lana's best lyrics ever

Idk if anyone else would agree or disagree, but I think Lana should do psychedelic rock on her next record.
Could you imagine a Lana x Stevie Nicks collab?
Or a Lana x Flaming Lips album?
Holy shit......

I was amazed by this when I found this on genius:
"Pink flamingos aren’t actually born pink. They become pink through their diet; Lana’s reference to them has transformative undertones. She believes that through her peace and acceptance of something she has no power over (her man leaving). she has gained a new sense of understanding and womanhood (like a flamingo turning pink)"
