Okay, I find your post confusing. On one hand, you're saying you don't like her more recent casual, natural looks, that you find it lazy, and that you want the older, glamourous style back.

And then you say women should be able to dress how they want, but it's as if you think she wants to be glamourous but feels she can't be.

What if she doesn't want to be glamourous? That should be okay, too.

I'm likely in the minority, but I quite like her casual, natural look of late. The pressure to always look glamourous when seen in public for 8 + years must've been draining af. I think it's good for her to take that pressure off herself. She doesn't look bad by any means.

ever since LFL she seems to care what the media/public/journalists think of her...
I find it annoying that she would care what people such as Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth have to say... because at the end of the day, as she said in her Pitchfork interview of 2017; she is "stuffing her own hair, they don't know what authentic is"

I think she must be going through something internally, I can only assume... when I go through a depressive or anxious state, I don't try to look presentable...
which is quite sad considering she really brought Glamour to the 21st Century.
Like Lana Del Rey used to deliver the most iconic looks, the most non-basic looks, but now she shows up in leggings, sketchers, and a sweater.. looking like a trader joes housewife who just got a new Range Rover...

especially when fans are paying $400 + a show,
I somewhat see it as entitled/narcissistic of her to not even try to serve a stage "look" but what can we do? nothing...it is her choice... and we as fans can judge/have opinions.
but she has said she was always part image artist (why she loves Kali Uchis) so if NFR is lazy t-shirt and jeans and black sketchers,,,,, I just see this as some lazy half done "project" when she feels she is so famous she can do whatever she wants...

I do love the simplicity she has had, especially driving her truck and not even trying to change clothes, but it just seems she is caving into critics of the past who made fun of her "real big beauty queen style" hair... WOMEN should be able to do whatever/dress however they want... don't tell women that if they dress in those styles, they aren't feminist... its dumb.
Men like David Bowie dressed up and did what they wanted and never got blamed for being fake...
    NFR better serve.

also... any thoughts as to what the album cover for NFR might look like?
do we think it will take on some form of Rockwell era style? I am so confused as to where the visuals stand this era?

I recently saw her very early semi-professional modeling shots, which suggested that being beautiful and sexually desirable was something that was there in her and important to her from a fairly early age, as is it for many or most youths. Maybe she’s matured enough to where she feels she can now leave that side of herself largely behind, especially in terms of her music career. Again, on the basis of the work and of what we know of NFR, ‘Hope’ definitely suggests she’s “not that” anymore in her own mind.

I think she is attractive, but she seems to be downplaying it as much as she can, even going so far as to post some photos which are very unflattering, at least to me.

Nationalxanthem, I agree. I’ve watched the decline in visuals and the shift in her persona with sadness, as it was everything about the BTD/Paradise era that I loved. She’s changed a great deal without verbal explanation, and no doubt both lost and gained fans in the process, as no doubt some newer fans like the LFL LDR but didn’t care for the BTD LDR when they investigated her older work.

To me, her initial era as LDR was a beautiful vision I hoped was authentic, and no doubt some aspects of it were, but a lot was just a performance, rather like the young woman in Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’ of the 1950s. ‘Hope’ makes me think the multiple personas are fragmenting her and that now she just wants to be herself, and perhaps not misrepresent herself to younger women who may in turn feel compelled to live up to an impossible standard of beauty, slenderness and public poise.

Way back in the late 1960s, Nico destroyed her own beauty for the same cluster of reasons, and didn’t gain respect as an artist until she had.

Regarding the bland visuals and lackluster photos of this era, that started about the time of Honeymoon, when LDR began posting unflattering photos and short clips of herself on social media, clearly by intent. I don’t think she wanted to be known or perceived as a sex symbol any longer, even if that was something that had interested her for a decade or more. Sometimes beautiful women aren’t taken seriously, especially if they’re artists.

The ‘this is what I really look like on a day to day basis’ approach was probably also intended to appease certain factions on the Left, such as Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, who trashed LDR in her book. Some on the Left are anti-glamour and feel female glamour is just a tool used by Madison Avenue, something that is used to manipulate women and hold them down. The early lines of ‘Hope’ clearly express that she isn’t a glamour girl anymore (assuming the song is intended to be autobiographical), or perhaps is only when she absolutely has to be (I.e., magazine covers to promote albums).

She seems to want the world to know that she’s on the pretty side of average looking, but not more than that.

After being a user here for almost two years, I realized that I haven't seen a thread for BTD! I'd love to have a place to discuss and praise the iconic album, and I hope you'll find a need for writing here too. ♥

She doesn’t need to be glamorous (I actually preferred her more chill UV era looks). I’m talking about how boring her MVs are, that’s why nobody is checking for them. I don’t mind simple MVs, but atleast serve us with something (a great shot, cool cinematography, trippy lighting - SOMETHING). Who wants to watch Lana’s back up dancers play with butterflies for 3 minutes like...

Lana's old work is timeless. That's why she gets streamed to death and it's what her past albums deserve. But because it's mostly her past work, it's not really what I'd call a great gauging of current popularity. Album sales matter more and lbr, with LFL, we were all expecting something better than what we got and it shows by how her latest material is being received. People are worried it's gonna be LFL 2.0

LFL was her worst album and era and the fact it was so highly praised by critics is disrespectful to her previous albums which were actual masterpieces. One of a kinds and pure Lana.
Not to rant but that critic response her last album got was so shady, praising Lana for writing about topics 'outside herself, like politics', like there's something wrong with selfish art. Felt like a slap in the face to Lana's previous work. Lana's sensitive to criticism. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what caused her lackluster attitude.

I'd be unmotivated too if everyone was up my ass only when I wrote about what they thought I should be writing about.

Anyway, Lana gets hammered no matter what she does so now she's not doing anything I guess lmao

I don't see why y'all are so upset about this era. Just go about your daily lives and be patient. We know it's coming, so just wait.

Her hair has looked kind of awful for the last couple of years.

She needs to bring back her long gay icon hair.

So someone on the earlier pages said she said it'd have 13 poems, and I count 9 on her IG (including 3 haiku).

So she only has 4 more to post and then she's fresh out of fucks - er, poems - and THEN she has to release it. Right? Right?!

And then we get the album?!

But she probably lied and it's 130 poems.

I plan of going to Strands and getting store credit for some of my used books including Rupi's two poetry book. I like the drawings in the book more then the actual poems which to me never sounded like poems. I like what Lana has written so far.

im so excited for the poetry book, but i think her fans would take to it a lot more if she released the album first. right now everyones too angsty and frustrated to be reading poems, especially when she teased her album months ago. she just needs to drop the album first and then give it a few months and then drop the book, at least by then fans will actually be in a good mood

But...why? All the tracks will be uploaded to youtube immediately, I'm sure of that. We'll be able to listen to NFR and download it for free. And, all jokes aside, do you honestly think this era will have any quality visuals? Do you truly believe the cover will be anything other than halfway decent at best? And even if by some miracle it's gorgeous (i.e. if they decide to reuse a pic neil krug took in 2016), does that change everything that's happened so far? No.

Oh and..."sorry we doubted you queen"? Who's doubting her music? Not a day goes by without at least 5 people waxing lyrical about Cinnamon, a song we don't even have in full. We've been losing our minds over fucking snippets. So why would it be shocking and/or hypocritical if people end up loving NFR once it's released? The overall sentiment is "fuck lana", not "fuck NFR" lol

P.S. I'm like super tired, lmk if something doesn't make sense

Well, I've just went through milk and honey and guuuuurl, I worry for Lana's cringy poems way less now. If someone, somewhere could ever consider Rupi's excerpts from her poorly written prepubescent diary successful, Lana's gonna be golden.

but yeah her backtrack in concert is too loud sometimes and over powers her live vocals. It happens a lot with Cherry on stage. she should forget the backtracks and hire real singers to sing back up for her.

Marina took a 3 year break from music and didn't talk about her new music until it was about to be released. New era promo shots released yesterday and new single in 8 days. All that time she regularly posted on instagram and kept in touch with fans. Complete 180 to what Lana does.

Still waiting for the Cherry music video.

Lana's merch is terrible anyway and too expensive. You can go to Michael's and buy t-shirt printing paper and make it yourself.

I fucking know, like ok I mean 20, for a decent cotton one, fine that could pass, but most prices are just so over the top, and some of the material on these things are either designed to look faded already, or have the washable print that doesn't make it all that much worth it

i don’t even want to pay $20 for a LQ bootleg of the shirt /: I hate how shirts have become so expensive. It’s a T-SHIRT

I didn't mean to sound condescending, so I apologize if that's how I came off. Making your own shirts can be super fun and you don't need to do it all by yourself. There are stores & websites that can help you with that. I used to make custom t shirts for me and my friends all the time when I was younger. Do you really think Lana/her label will come up with something better than you can? I mean...
