She truly doesn't owe us anything though.

After everything she's been through I don't blame her if she quits the business or pulls a Kate Bush or Enya by just releasing music but never tours again. The moment Lana became "famous" she has been laughed at, criticized (SNL), attacked and bullied - even by other celebrities. Kim Gordon told Lana to go "kill herself already". Frances Cobain went on a twitter rampage attacking Lana. Then came the stalking. One "fan" broke into her beach house. Some other "fans" stole her cars. The two Russian "fan girls" who stalked Lana everywhere then threatened her - to the point she had to get a restraining orders. That one "fan" who wanted to kidnap her, rape her and strangle her so they "can be together forever".  She once said she was retiring in 2013. She must have been thinking about it many times after what's happened to her.

    The woman needs a break.

Asking her about NFR in every post she posts on twitter or instagram probably makes her want to release the album even less. I wouldn't be surprised if she shelved the poetry book after the awful things people said in here about her poetry. I'm sure she reads here, it's not even a question.

Remember, Lana is human and she has feelings. Be a little gentle that's all.

I genuinely think some people are overreacting about the "drought". Lana already dropped many songs (some of them already on her top best) and snippets like Mariner's Appartment Complex, Venice Bitch, Happiness Is a Butterfly and more, performed a new "country song" and How To Disappear. Now a cover. All in a short amount of time. It's like people are never fully satisfied. It's the Honeymoon era where NOTHING literally happened. And remember when she started to be more active on social media during the Lust For Life era and people thought it was weird and "out of character"?
I guess the thing that produces discontentment is the lack of big productions. I'm sure if she released a nice video for Venice Bitch and promoted it properly, her fans would be way happier than with just a bunch of loose songs. It's the "unofficialness" of it all that doesn't result in any sort of excitement. But it would be unfair to say there has been a lack of content coming from her.

Not gonna lie, the Moby story gives me more life than Doin’ Time. That might be enough to tide me over until the album tbh.

Moby is a wonderful musician - would have been a better pick than G-Easy and Barrie from that perspective

Tori Amos has also written extensively about her unhappy experiences with the music industry, and specifically about how older female artists are politely sidelined and ‘put out to pasture,’ though we don’t know if that is a factor in LDR’s case, as she’s under 35.

Right. It’s interesting how Mitchell often wrote about ‘the star-making machinery behind the popular song’ and the critics ‘bringing out the boards and the nails’ to wall-off and get rid of artists they had grown tired of. Rolling Stone famously voted her ‘Old Lady of the Year,’ which she found insulting.

40 years ago, she was going through much the same thing that LDR is now, and also in LA.

Like everyone, she has crises and hassles in her life, which is far more complicated than most of ours. I sensed a crisis after ‘Paradise,’ with the public feud with Lorde, falling out with BJON, the SNL disaster two weeks running, and then the eventual birth of UV, which was radically different from BTD/P.

I think she’s going through a similar upset and re-evaluation of her life now, and where her career fits into it. We don’t know what the hell is going on, but it’s very likely that something is.

Maybe like so many other artists, from Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush, Fiona Apple and Marina, she’s just tired of being a celebrity and wants to reclaim her privacy; and she may be additionally conflicted about THAT.

Maybe she’s just found herself in a huge muddle that only time and rest and relaxation will fix. Maybe she feels like she simply cannot make a decision about anything.

And she doesn’t owe us anything. Lots of artist take way longer. Even Kate Bush who released very frequently early on like Lana started taking much longer a lot sooner, so we’re actually lucky. Plus look at all the unreleased stuff we have. Even Stevie Nicks (known for lots of unreleased stuff) doesn’t have that much. I can’t believe how lucky we are yet somehow we’re still complaining. She deserves a little time for herself and she doesn’t owe any of us an explanation. We’re not her friends. We’re strangers.

Tbh she does seem like she’s getting sick of being a celebrity and just wants a balance of creating art and living her regular life. And I think fans harassing her constantly is probably making her want to quit it all even more. It sucks though since writing and performing is her passion so she’s forced to deal with this crap to fulfill her passion. That’s why Joni Mitchell “quit” after almost every album but kept coming back. It’s hard to choose between your life and your art.

Okay you think she’s unprofessional and don’t like the way she’s handled it? Well you’re not her boss, so luckily it doesn’t have to bother you. Her album will come out when it comes out and she’ll release news when she chooses to. As much as it sucks for us, we truly aren’t entitled to anything. Either wait or don’t. She doesn’t care.

i'd definitely get her feeling resentment towards this forum tbh. however, i also feel like it's the price you pay for being a public figure made ridiculously rich by the people you're also disappointing...... i don't agree it has to descend into cruelty though. some mocking i think can be fun, constructive criticism and opinion sharing for sure. i don't get why people get so upset over some of the longer, analytical posts written with careful thought tho cos personally i find them really interesting

    Disgusting comment.

Look at ‘Old Money’ for example—did anyone really believe she was a mature woman in her late 40s, 50s or 60s looking back on her life and failed marriage? Of course not. That was simply the persona she stepped into for the sake of the song.

It was not ‘fake,’ ‘inauthentic,’ not a lie or a deception of any kind.

I'm really tired so excuse my wording in this post.

I really wouldn't be surprised if she is feeling insecure about the album. As you said, we discussed pages ago about how the reception to Hope was probably not what she was expecting, but when you stop and think about it, I think it might've been the same with LFL, which adds even more weight to the theory.

I really feel like Coachella might've been her favourite track on LFL. I don't think she ever named an outright favourite (I think she said WM was one of her favourites and I'll get to that), but she did mention it in almost every single interview in 2017/18. How she wrote it in a week or whatever, how she was inspired by North Korean missiles, etc ... I got the impression that she was really proud of it and pretty much everyone feels that it's the weakest track on that album.

And even White Mustang - fans have such a love/hate relationship with it, and in that recent interview she said that White Mustang was one of her favourite tracks on that album. She also said, "oh, barely anyone has heard it" which was very what the fuck.

So given all of that, plus the fact that Hope is usually placed behind VB and MAC (even in streaming numbers) ... I get why she might be second-guessing. It's just a theory.

Whatever the reason: I think we can all agree that, at some point, she's definitely had a change of heart in terms of the release schedule. Nobody releases 3 songs in relatively quick succession and then fucks off for 5 months and counting.

And re: the comments - I realised that she probably just set up keyword filters (eg: "NFR") to filter out any comments containing those words. That's not as dramatic as manually deleting, but it still indicates ... sensitivity.

i forgot ben didn't like the original album cover. that's it. that's what this whole thing has been about. she is being petty as hell and refuses to do anything for the next year because she doesn't like to be told no. i can see the whole scenario of her managers texting and calling and asking about the new cover while she just sits on a lawn chair with her insta friends and takes 5 days to text back a "respect my process please" text while taking another sip of her green matcha whatever drink.

This makes me so sad. It’s sad how the people who supposedly love her most are also the most cruel. She deserves better.
  19. bluefiona liked a post in a topic by necessary sacrifice in Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread
I know this isn’t the comment anyone cares for, but Lana’s big change in behaviour, appearance, musical direction, lyrical content, and turning her back on her fans isn’t a new concept. Lots of artists go through a period like that and maybe I’m biased but it’s usually just before some of the best music comes. Both David Bowie and Joni Mitchell started to do this around the same point in their career. It turns away some fans, brings new ones in, and some stay through it all. It doesn’t really matter in the end though. If people don’t like nfr, she might still have another album come along that you will like and that’s ok. Artists change many many times and you don’t have to like or even agree with everything they do. And honestly if she follows all these other great artists, you’ll probably start to hate her more over the next couple albums before coming back around. Let’s hope not, but who knows. Like most artists, she’s unpredictable.

Most of all, it raises a few questions about where her head is at right now.

She's putting on this big Insta baddie wannabe act and everyone's all, "leave her alone, she's HAPPY!" but this video was pretty fucking reckless. Like ... her eyes are barely on the road, at some points they're even closed, no seat belt, one hand on the wheel, etc ... Jesus.

Does a happy and clean person  in a good headspace do this type of thing? I don't know if they do. It demonstrates a complete disregard for her own well-being and that of others. To me, she's either not doing as wonderfully as she'd have us believe, and/or her ego has gotten so large that she thinks she can't die in a car crash like any other mere mortal.

You know, and I don't think she flipped the video for fun. I think she thought she could fool everyone into not noticing that she was driving by doing so. Which is also problematic.

I'm so here for her crazy, but not at the expense of her well-being and that of others.

She’s a rich white woman, she never actually experienced poverty
What you’re talking about is the romanticisation of poverty which was a theme throughout her career. She has never experienced that life ergo she her heart cannot speak to it
It’s all fake. When Lana talks about the 50s, it’s fake. When Lana talks about daddies, it’s fake. When Lana talks about gangsters, if’s fake. Lana is fake, to a certain degree, because the name itself is a persona. And that’s largely why she was interesting in the beginning

I showed my mum her crazy video from yesterday. She was like, "how old is she?!" and I told her and she was like, "that's so irresponsible. Young people will watch that and think that it's okay for them to do that, too." (and then I got the inevitable "don't YOU do that just because she did" lecture). Typical mum comment and I still fucking LOVE that video but ... she has a point.

Maybe her ego has gotten a bit too big ... and maybe that's why she's ignoring her fanbase  ... idk ... early morning ponderings
