He really did say exactly that. What an idiot.

Bernie Sanders is the leader the US of A really deserved.

I mean it's true though. How long has it taken for women to finally get some recognition? How long has it taken for women to finally say "you know what? I can be strong like a man too".

Fragile femininity has always been the norm and has also been the most acceptable.

lana is confident - almost arrogant - enough about her art that she can't take any sort of criticism that isn't lavish praise & immediately interprets any as unjustified hate. now, to be clear, i think that sort of blind confidence in your vision is an extremely positive trait for any artist to have: you express what you want, how you want to, in your own terms alone & damn everyone else. the problem or contradiction with her is that she still very much craves approval and mainstream success, so despite all that confidence in her own voice there's still a lot of underlying insecurity.

if she doesn't want to be tormented all her life, she needs to pick one: either she goes the lou reed route of openly hating critics & believing they serve no purpose whatsoever in art other than gatekeeping and/or spoon-feeding to the masses, so she just ignores and laughs at positive and negative reviews both, OR she has to accept that if she wants to play the music industry game she'll always get love, hate & everything in between bc different people will *always* interpret the same things differently, whether that be your music, your poetry, or yourself as a person/persona.

this applies to how she receives music criticism rather than criticism on her present tone deafness, but imo this is the underlying issue & applies here too. re: this situation, she can choose to be the messy artist that says whatever the hell she wants, fucks up publicly & doesn't care about the consequences à la courtney love & yes, azealia banks, OR she can choose to have the humility to stfu, listen & apologize (either sincerely or not, bc sincerity is frankly beside the point in this game) but again, she needs to pick one bc she can't have it both ways.

Yeah there was nothing in that video that indicated she had taken any of the constructive criticism on board. Quite the opposite - as someone pointed out, it was almost as if she name dropped Twigs out of spite ...

Let me be clear: I don't think she deserves all the hate she's getting, but I also think that this just proves that the good sis can't take criticism - even if it's constructive, which some of it is. She seems to view any and all criticism as blanket hate.

Maybe I'm too old to be on here, so I can see what's really happening on a deeper level when everyone else is arguing about semantics...
but I feel like she has never found her real identity and self worth, and thus, through art, as therapy, begain singing about all of her trauma... it got her famous!
She didn't even have a chance to absorb anything because overnight life was changed. And it's been nonstop ever since. And it seems that now, she has based her identity and self worth, her inherent value, in her art. But she is not her art. Her art is from her, but it is not wholly her.

I say this because in her post, some things were concerning to me. When she said, "I don't know, my muse hasn't left me yet..." she sounded serious. Like that was a worry, a concern, and that all the praise she gets— "you're a genius!" 24/7 has become a pedestal that she needs to stay on for survival. It's pressure and torture. And she believes it, too. "I'm blessed by the gods, everyone knows it, and thus, that is who I am, that is my value on this earth" which is sad because we are all valuable, and we are born valuable, naked and unkempt.

She needs to discover that none of this shit matters. What her peers think of her, doesn't matter. What her fans think of her doesn't matter. What her executives think, doesn't matter. When men think, doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what she thinks of herself, and she can't do that without basing it on outside things or people for validation.

All of this is exactly why so many, including myself, relate to her. She wasn't afraid to be "ugly" in the sense of, vulnerable in the "wrong" way. Like singing about being crazy, singing about being in love through abuse. She was being authentic, and what the hell is more inspiring than seeing someone be who they really are?

See and this is one of the things so many people have criticized. How is her threatening to fuck someone the fuck up (pretentious AAve), her singing about her pussy tasting like Pepsi, and so on her being a fragile, soft woman (the kind that is already the face of feminism, but then again she’s not a feminist but also not not a feminist so who cares)? But the woc she mentioned are just singing about sex and cheating? Like just make your 50s white submissive housewive music and go. You have so much more
Success with it than most other female artists could dream of having anyway.

Ugh. Her responses to this are....   So Twigs being on a stripper pole is considered artistic, but when she does it people call her a whore. Like what? That's such a surface level analysis of it. While we can all agree that we knew what she was coming from from her initial post, at the end of the day, she really needs to do more research on our current culture that involves hearing someone's else's voice except her own before she addresses it. And I find it ironic that she accuses everyone of not reading and misinterpreting her words, when she's doing the same thing to the valid criticisms and responses towards her.

...But that defeats her whole point to say “delicate” women aren’t accepted in feminism? They either are or aren’t. Lana just thinks she’s the only one who faces criticism

Not her comparing herself awkwardly rubbing against a pole to Twigs who is a trained dancer. And when was she called a whore for it and by whom? And since when are these other women (mostly Woc) she unnecessarily mentioned exempt from misogyny and baseless hate? The audacity and tone deafness-

I wish for the exact opposite. I want Lana with a huge bouffant wearing one of those fancy caftan you wear at fancy dinner parties exuding 60s realness and feeling every bit of the glamorous woman she knows she is! Also Neil Krug has to capture the whole thing! No more beige/DIY/amateur visuals, thank u!

Lol that film clip. She’s really falling full-force into this little 50s submissive, damsel in distress act, huh?

Lanz said "in what will inevitably become a new wave/3rd wave of feminism that is rapidly approaching. Watch!" and I think most people actually interested in feminist theory can agree that the 3rd wave of feminism has already begun. Whether we are still in it is debatable to a lot of people, but we've definitely already "approached" it and it does sound funny when she says "Watch!" like she's missed the last couple of decades. I think it's just kinda funny

with all of this I can only say that the caption she edited about her chilling is so aggressive in a way and it disturbed me even more. also, imagine being famous and posting a “controversial post” that gets you shit on and hated, then to post another statement of the sort and then go to your dms to talk to your fans only to find out that they’re questioning your mental state in such an ugly manner. lana had every right to lash out on them. from this mess I can take away that it is CRUCIAL that we take away the artist from the art. I was up till 5am last night worried for her and I even got nauseous thinking about everything so this was a good lesson to learn from. I’m still deathly worried for her and I’m sure you guys are too

Zara made some points, was it REALLY necessary for Lana to make an entire post about how there's no room for 'frilly' feminists? Then again, free speech and all so Lana can post what she wants. But you can still agree with Lana as well as disagree, not everything has to be black and white, one or the other. I think that was Zara's take on it anyway

Yes, I think you're absolutely right.

It has become increasingly clear through the years that Lana is hyper-sensitive to any criticism from the media and tastemakers in general. And yes, she did get a lot of unwarranted and unfair criticism at first. I can understand being mad about it and speaking on it. However it seems like she's completely unable to weigh it up against the rivers of critical acclaim and accolades she has recieved since the years after her debut. She's it very bitter still and it clouds her judgement sometimes.

She's so keen on framing herself as the percecuted artist that she doesn't see the bigger picture and how other female artists - of colour or not - are also treated unfairly by the media a lot. Maybe not in the completely same way but unfairly none the less. It's a bad look to frame them as somehow different from herself in that regards.

Love her to death, but I'm only half joking when I say she needs a spin doctor who can help formulate her thought on politics and society. Almost everytime she tries to get political she kinda puts her foot in her mouth. Often because her persecution complex gets in the way of her valid points. It's a real shame cause I genuinely think she has some interesting takes.

I think that sentence was off because she is implying that women being abused has something to do with a quality about themselves rather than an issue with the man doing the abuse. It is a way to internalize misogyny and blame oneself for being the "type" of woman that is abused rather than placing the blame on the man for being the abuser.
