The Greatest is completely different from what I imagined the song would be like based off the snippet we got. I assumed the song would deal with losing a lover or someone else close, but I didn't anticipate that the "greatest loss of them all" may be the loss of faith in the world we live in or the loss of the world we once lived in.

    What happened was this:

She and Jack were planning to release FIILY and TG as we thought, one song on each day and the mv on Saturday. That's why we had that link that said, "coming on Friday", and the iTunes information, and assorted shit.

But THEN she made up LFA, and thought, "I gave them two new songs last week, so fuck 'em."

But THEN Google leaked The Greatest in retaliation for her loving her iPhone so much, and for singing about an iPad. "The Greatest" is also a subliminal message that Android devices are, after all, superior to Apple devices.

And THEN she either failed to inform Jack, or Jack forgot because he was too busy bumping a mic somewhere, so Jack posted that they were coming out, so THEN she told Jack to take it doen, so THEN Jack posted that they weren't coming out, then Jack posted that he was "high" in his tiger-wallpapered studio.

    The end.

    That's 100% what happened, don't @ me.

As a mentally unstable 24 year old gay I feel relieved that Lana wants ME

I kinda thought the "loss" was the complete denigration of the America she used to believe in so much... but that could be me extrapolating

im probably stating the obvious but im high so let me have my investigative journalist moment.

The Greatest is essentially the same concept as Coachella/Woodstock (it's just a way better version of it). The whole "signing off" theme throughout the song weaves together 1969 and 2019, two decades with arguably the most culturally apocalyptic conclusions (in America, at least). 1969 saw Vietnam, race riots, and flower children morphing into Manson's homicidal psychopaths. 2019 brings the end of an equally tense and destabilized era in America, albeit arguably less violent (no Vietnam War: II, thank god).

Miss Gangster Nancy Sinatra has always written from a perspective within the chasm between nostalgia and modernity, so I think The Greatest is not only the quintessential Lana song but it's almost uncomfortably timely/relevant, and above all just really fucking genius songwriting.

Norman Rockwell = a lot of men who think they're amazing and are not

"The culture is lit". My interpretation is that her using that phrase is ironic. Kanye is still a thing while Beach Boys don't play anymore, she and her friends miss rock and roll, everything was better back then and now it's just not the same out there in the world. The ball meaning that the best things already happened in her life, at the same time California is on fire and we're trying to reach space colonizations and it's a weird lanscape for us as humans. But at the same time she loves Migos and trap so who the fuck knows why she'd say that in a bad way lol

Lust for Life was basically intended to be messy, it was everything that Lana is/has been/wants to become all in one album. It was a full circle moment. It shown her intelectual side about believing in a positive future and being together (Love, LFL) to her classic emotional relationship ballads (13B, Cherry, White Mustang), to her hip hop gangsta side (SM, GL, IMF), her political side (GBA, WAW, Coachella, BPBP) and of course, the last 3 songs being its own seperate parting story to the person she wants to become.

Lust for Life was a gateway record to something new, its title being a nod to her first record was just the perfect way to end things. I dont think she's ever going to be the same again.

..anyway sorry for talkin about lfl, i know this has been said A LOT but i just, as much as the album is messy and ugly.. it had its purpose and led to this iconic album!

does anyone else find it a bit eerie that Lana's been seemingly prophesizing the end of the world with her last couple of albums? WTWWAWBWJKD, the "till it runs red, runs red with blood" line from BPBP, the title of TNC, and Get Free's intro lines (Finally, I'm crossing the threshold...) give me strong Apocalypse teas- oh and how could I forget the "Armageddon" line from White Mustang and the missile from its music video. Oh and Coachella being inspired by North Korea. Now we have the Greatest talking about the mass death of culture and (if the director of the video has any precedence w Love & White Mustang) we possibly will have an apocalyptic video coming soon to match the song. I mean I love Lana and her realism but like, is anyone else finding this a bit morbid? (I guess I should have known with her first album being titled Born to DIE)

Maybe the double music video will be divided in two parts? Like the FIILY segment representing the past, the golden era, which would be the footage of her and the muscle beach baby, very 60's. And the Greatest showing the future in a post apocalyptic dystopian way, with everything destroyed and only Lana still standing? That would be an amazing concept

    Full agree.

There’s a “ground control to Major Tom” theme suggested in this song, so that it could be or almost be interpreted as being sung by someone from Earth watching the world be destroyed from a distant planet (like Mars) via a ‘live stream.’ Why does the narrator miss LA, NYC, rock n’ roll? Where is she that she misses them and can’t access them? Losing Earth certainly would be the greatest loss of all.

Writing about your disappointment in a once very talented artist who now identifies as a Trump supporter isn't racist, people are just thick.

The way the songs starts dying while she lists the catastrophes that happened to the world is just
A fireball hitting Earth, LA in flames, Kanye losing his brain, our planet becoming lifeless just like Mars
This is a god-tier if I ever listened to one

The song (mostly the lyrics) gave me futuristic, post apocalyptic, dystopian realness. Maybe there's a reason why she chose the same direction of the Love MV
