What's weird though (on the subject of leaks hurting sales) is that you have to take into account the fans' subjectivity: for a lot of people they'd be kind of bummed out to get a previously leaked song on an official album. It would be seen as a wasted opportunity. What unheard music could have been on there instead? And these people may very well not end up purchasing something because of this. Yet, on the other hand, for many other people--and i would argue that this is probably determined by what sort of an audience it is (which is typically dictated by the sort of artist and music, and i think more and more by generation)--having a previously leaked song show up on an official album is a great, exciting thing and reason to celebrate because they get to have, on an official product that they can hold in their hands, the music in full quality (a 320 kbps mp3, the highest mp3 encoding, which we're lucky to get, is far from that, and keep in mind also that a lot of unreleased stuff isn't always mastered, and sometimes not even properly mixed, not to mention that a leaked song might take on a new life on a released album if new overdubs are added or if different elements are rerecorded). That's important to a lot of people. There are factions in the large landscape of music fans, and they all have differing interests and priorities, which affects what they place value in.

I am not sure if I loved Lana so much if I had listened to only her official Born To Die album. All her leaks add so much variety to her officially released songs and make me appreciate her as an artist even more. It's great to see how much her music has evolved during the years and honestly I love many of her unreleased songs even more than the album versions. They seem so much more genuine and emotional.
I don't understand why people complain that leaks are bad for a singer but still continue to listen to them when somebody else leaks them on the Internet. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? If you disapprove so strongly of the new leaks then you shouldn't be the one to praise these songs and help to spread them even further. I love leaks. I don't know how Lana feels about these songs spreading among fans but I hope that she isn't too upset when true fans get to enjoy some more of her talent. Isn't that why she has written her music in the first place?

Once all this Lana stuff dies down, I'm leaking Monicker's secret acoustic album

I posted covers for these songs before (on LDR.FM), but I've redone them.

Good work:) You need to keep making covers

Well, I introduced Lana to a lot of my friends- and they all really like her. Even people who really wanted to hate her.

And in general, I think Lana is actually quite popular in Baltimore. She has the kind of aesthetic that people here can connect to, I think. Diners and motels and trash culture and that sort of thing. She has a really campy side that is very baltimore (like in Kinda Outta Luck). So, I think she's actually pretty popular. When my sister and I and my best friend all went to see her in NYC, there was at least one other couple who was on our bus going to see her as well

Yeah, this is all a fantasy. And tbh, I think I'd feel a bit sick if I listened to it because
    a) the waste of money!
    b) I wouldn't be able to enjoy the music - I'd be scribbling down inaccurate lyrics
    c) the pressure on me afterwards would be awful. A whole Team Lana army would be shooting questions about it at me and I'd just be like... I dunno.

That would actually be a good time frame. "Dark Paradise" video building interest for the "Paradise Edition."

But there won't be any diversity if she just does the same images/themes/styles after Born to Die

It's nice to love and be loved, but I'd rather hear her pre-Sirens album

people want them because from the previews they sound amazing ... Well for me Damn You is amazing, even from the snippet. I really like the melody and it seems like a chill melodic song that is catchy... I think it doesn't fit in with the BTD theme, but maybe the "paradise edition" makes BTD theme less "die" and more "paradise" if you get what I mean ...

I don't really care how we get the song, as long as we get it. I really2 want to listen to the full thing

Judging from pictures, I'm about the same size as her but I'm a bit more busty and I'm at an average weight. But then again, she's a grown woman so maybe it isn't healthy on her.

@PrettyBaby, Sorry for sounding a bit bitter. I thought you were playfully mocking the part where I said I was just guessing, lol. But yeah, I do think there's more Lana to be uncovered.

A lot of people do. For women, it often manifests as something called Intense World Syndrome. Usually IWS makes people want to avoid intense situations (because they are overwhelmed sooner/more easily), but sometimes it expresses itself in thrill-seeking behavior. Or so I've read. I don't think this discussion is mean at all; I think it's exciting that our society is becoming more open about these things, and learning more about what diverse issues different people cope with every day.

Her "un-feminist" lyrics don't strike me as superficial, but rather complex. Sometimes our culture oversells Power Feminism (IMO, like women aren't allowed to have human needs/weaknesses/failings because at this point in history we have to "represent"), and I see Lana's strong perspective of apparent submissiveness as partly in reaction to that -- a stand for individuality. Yet, I also see her sometimes-submissive demeanor as apparent, an act. Not only because it's fun to role-play, but also to some degree because one effective way to subvert a patriarchal mindset is to infiltrate it and bring about change from within. (I may be projecting this, though, based on my own life story. It resonates so much with me.) For example, I see the video for PMIAM, more than the song, as participating in sexual "exploitation" to regain a sense of personal agency, while at the same time protesting it by interspersing clips of a man being taken away in handcuffs. And again, I may be projecting, but I imagine that she could be doing a similar thing in OTTR, to an extent, though perhaps with more participation and less apparent protest.

So anyway, that's what I mean when I say I think Lana subverts both the patriarchy and Power Feminism

Hard living (drugs, thrill-seeking, possible cosmetic surgery) can definitely take a toll. But things like heavy makeup and lack of sleep will temporarily age a person as well. Check out recent airport candids; I think she looks more fresh-faced in them. Also, look at these photos from the Tartan Clef Awards last year -- she's the same Lizzy she always was!

THIS. I am both an egalitarian and a feminist. (I even occasionally call myself a "masculinist," to what I hope is a healthy and beneficial extent, though I don't tend to focus on it as much.) My life has taken me from a casual feminism through patriarchalism into a fierce egalitarianism that seeks to promote and protect women and girls, men and boys, and those who don't quite feel they fit into those categories. But I am uncomfortable with both Power Feminism and Victim Feminism, and I'm seeking a happy medium, though I don't quite know what to call it yet. (I'm toying with "Shalom Feminism." Might be too obscure.) I believe it is the responsibility of each one of us to see, support, and promote the dignity in every human being, whether or not they make it easy for us.

The GQ cover and the boob-groping pic are SO NOT egalitarian, it's ridiculous. Yet it is a human perspective. I don't like it.

THIS too. I love her so much. Love you guys too.
