I think both countries have interesting cultures.
America is lucky because WW 1 and 2 didn't hit it as hard as Europe so there was more cultural development in the 20th century which, musically, is really interesting to look into. Like '50's and '60's music.

For some reason I've been lately wondering how would it be if Lana covered ''Hallelujah'' by Leonard Cohen. I think it would sound pretty amazing.

If you get lonely, think of me only
Prison isn’t going to keep me from you
Remember Coney Island and how we’d
Wade into the water ‘til the waves turned blue

Nobody does have to know that our love’s alive
Keep it on the low, if you want to hide
Got that same address if you want to write
One/On Greenwich Avenue, wishing and thinking of you

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

If you get lonely, think of this only
    Heaven hasn’t forgotten about you
Though you can’t hold me, pick up and phone me
Use your one phone call on your ex-girl boo

I won’t tell a single soul how you spend your nights
In that single cell, holding your pillow tight
If you really are afraid, then you ought to know
That you’re the one I want, the one I want forevermore

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

I know you get scared sometimes, boy
Nothing to be feared when you’re in my heart
Troubles come in threes, but in your case
They came in millions and trillions, but that’s alright

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

You know sometimes I think God's playing a little game with me
Looking down from Heaven, laughing, trying to see how much I can take
Because the way things go, it's like a joke
Nobody's had more shots at the moon and missed than me

It's like I got my life stuck, stuck on rewind
Tryin' to make something of myself, life's got something else in mind
I'm fighting a losing game and I'm biding my time
You won't be my man, do I understand?

    No, stop
I don't wanna hear another word about your why not's, I bought
Your bullshit all before and now you're trying to sell me more, babe

A man who makes a beast out of himself got nothing to lose
Sold my soul long ago, nothing left to choose
I'm tired, tired of singing the blues
    I'm tired, ah

I'm walking down the streets, you wouldn't know what I was thinking
It's just another white girl day, hey, ribbons in my hair and I am sinking down
A double life, a sordid past and I am drinking now
I want to be bad, you say you were glad to see me

    Shut up
I don't wanna know another thing you think you know about me
I'm not who you think I am, smiling but I ain't happy

A man who makes a beast out of himself got nothing to lose
Sold my soul long ago, nothing I can choose
I'm tired, tired of singing the blues
    I'm tired, ah

Oh, my [super God/soul forgot], I can't turn off
My mind is like a ticking time bomb
Trying to kill me from inside
    Haunting me day and night
Is there no remedy for memory?

I've felt this way before, I've known the depths of utter desperation
My boyfriend says I'm like an old movie star, with loneliness as my occupation
I know that he's right, but I don't care tonight
I want to be bad, I want to be bad

    I can't stop
I keep running 'round the same town, knocking you down
    I'm fucked
How can I get out when there's no where to go for miles around?

A man who makes a beast out of himself got nothing to lose
Sold my soul long ago, nothing I can choose
I'm tired, tired of singing the blues
    I'm tired, ah!

I guess I was so in love with her a few years ago because she was really like the only pop star. Also she was really the only person I was able to keep up with as a young highschooler that wasn't a web-freak. 'Cause nobody used the internet then like we do now. However, she has a special place in my heart because she was like my first fave.

I will introduce you the band and post a few songs of them. They are awesome. You really have to check them out.

    CHVRCHES
Chvrches (pronounced as "churches" and sometimes stylized as CHVRCHES) are a Scottish electropop band from Glasgow, formed in 2011. The group consists of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, additional synthesizers),Iain Cook (synthesizers, guitar, vocals), and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, vocals).
Chvrches came fifth on the BBC's Sound of 2013 list of the most promising new music talent. In March 2013 they released Recover EP.

    Music Style
Chvrches' music style is usually tagged as electronic or synthpop. Neon Gold described their sound as "a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy". Kitty Empire of the Observer wrote they "make accessible electro-pop that's only just short of truly brilliant".
Chvrches are influenced by acts such as Prince, Tubeway Army, Robyn, Laurie Anderson, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, and Elliott Smith. The band writes, records, mixes, and masters their songs in a basement studio in Glasgow.

Oh, where do I start? I've been a major Gaga fan for about 4 years. Until about a month ago it changed. The beginning was that I kind of liked her ''insane'' outfits, like, when she used to wear e.g. Kermit the Frog and stuff like that. I just loved what it represented, that she sort of ''didn't care'' about what other people thought of her. And that's why I started to get into her. The way she talked about ''loving her fans more than anything'', the whole ''I don't care about money, I care about art'' speech, ''anti-bullying'' and all. To me it was a psychological thing, someone to look up to, IDK. It was never that much about the music. However, I knew she had talent when I watched those vids on youtube Gaga performing songs like ''Electric Kiss'', ''Captivated'', ''Hollywood'' etc. And that's where I fell in love. Even during ''The Fame'',''The Fame Monster'', ''Born This Way'' I still saw that girl singing ''Captivated'' and playing the piano. So, it's like I know she can write those amazing songs, yet she doesn't. The reason she changed her Tori Amos-esqe style of writing music into what we get since ''The Fame'', is because of the music industry, in my opinion, because that is what sells. In this music she does since ''The Fame'', I don't feel the soul. However, yet again, I always said she's not the best song writer out there, concerning the lyrics. She was lying the whole way, saying things like 'I'm not religious' initially, and then turns out she's a Catholic. Yet I knew that as well, along the way. The one thing I still believed is that she cares about her fans. And then it was the time, 23rd of August was her show in Riga. The day before we went to her hotel and that was the day my faith started to fall into pieces. Because she obviously didn't care about any of us. And guess the funny thing, the next day in her show she says:''I love you so much LM, that you can see that.'' Sorry, Gaga I didn't see that. And ok, I thought, I still love her. And then she starts to wear fur (I'm a vegetarian) stating it's art. Nope, killed and tortured animals are not art, especially for someone just to show off. She's making millions, buying all this expensive shit (I know she can buy whatever she wants), yet when she was the one saying she doesn't care about money. And then she says she's just like us, well, I personally cannot relate to someone like that. I kind of feel like now that she's got what she wanted, she just doesn't give a shit about any of us. I got lost somewhere between truth and lies. I know I don't talk about music here that much, but, as I previously mentioned, to me it was never about the music in the first place.
And after all of this, can I just say there's no way I would ever hate her, because after everything, she has been a major part of my life and an inspiration in many moments. So, I will always have that special place in my heart for that girl I saw playing ''Electric Kiss'' on the piano. This is like me saying goodbye to the whole Gaga era or smth
And about the LM.com, it's true there is sooo much immaturity there...Not just talking about the hate towards other artists, but about the ARTPOP, posts like ''omg, my Gaga poster fell on me, it's a sign that ARTPOP is coming'', or smth like ''Gaga posted this and that, so that means ARTPOP is gonna be released.....'' are killing me. There are some really amazing people on LM, but I feel like the good posts just get sort of ''over-shadowed'' by all the immature ones. That's why I love it here on LanaBoards so much, people are actually smart and having good conversations and good humour. Ok, feels so good to actually finally say all of this.

I am still confused whether I should say something or not and say my opinion about this.

First of all, I love Gaga, and I have loved her since early 2009. I think Gaga has changed a lot (to the worse) since Born This Way came out. It's nice that she wants everybody to be themselves and she makes them feel accepted, but at least to me, she seems to be so made-up sometimes. It's not really natural, and apparently the fame (no pun intended) has taken over her in a way which she thinks she's powerful enough to come up with whatever speech she wants, and there will still be millions of "Little Monsters" thoughtlessly following it all.

I love to be a part of the community of the artists I admire and love, and I used to be on Lady Gaga forums but they are just so filled with immature and stupid fans that I just would rather let it go. I feel so much more comfortable here and around fans of the other artists I love than Gaga. She is a big part of my life and special to me, but I don't think I would stand it if her next album or attitudes were like in the Born This Way era.

Lana talks about visions a lot, so my idea is that she just had this vision of herself, of what she wanted to be, how she wanted to look like and creating an image of Lana Del Rey is exactly that, making that vision a reality. It is just like an evolution, and I don't think that Lana can be separated from Lizzy, because as I see it, we are what we want to be, the vision is a part of us. Like, I constantly have certain visions of myself, of how I want my life to look like and how I want other people to perceive me, it's like work in progress. I hope that what I've written just now is at least somewhat comprehensible, sometimes I have trouble expressing my thoughts
Concerning other traits of her personality, I think she's really shy and I can understand her. For example she doesn't talk much when she performs, or doesn't know what to say at all and just gets confused. I also think she truly cares about people and is really kind, just watching her meeting fans, she signs everything...I don't know if this is a logical statement, but as a pisces (a.k.a. the most fucked up sign out there ) I can usually tell things about people and see behind their actions. Like, I was front row in Riga and I could see that she's really genuine when connecting with her fans and truly appreciates the support. Also, she just has this light energy about her that will just make you smile.
Also talking about her past, I think she's being protective about it, because she is a private person and that's what's hard for her about having this certain fame and recognition. People want to know and figure it out, and I feel like she doesn't want to expose certain things, exactly because of being a private person. It's like, she writes those lyrics , in that way talking about her past life experiences, but it's not exactly direct, so she still leaves things to herself. And that is why there is this 'mystery' concerning her past.

she talks about being the 'bad girl that knows better', having a chameleon soul, no fixed personality, etc and i think its all true. i remember reading an article about her where the interviewer describes her as being 'coltishly innocent' with a 'vampish sense of knowingness'. i think that's a pretty accurate description of her lyrics, her imagery, and her personality. its probably also why people are so quick to assume that she's inauthentic, or putting on some sort of an act -- she seems to be a bit of a walking contradiction. personally, i think lizzy grant was more 'coltish and innocent' while lana del rey is more 'vampish and knowing'. elizabeth (herself) is probably a combination of those things and more.

i think her beauty and her broadly overactive mind have come to shape her the most. she seems highly sensitive and intuitive to people's energies, her surroundings, and her own thoughts. since she tends to remain quiet (or ~ contemplative), perhaps even stoic or detached, people have thus come to perceive her as being stuck up, arrogant, possibly even vapid, if not worse. maybe these reactions have pushed her into her own shell, or left her quite cynical? i think a large part of her insecurities come down to the misperceptions (and passive aggressions) that have probably followed her throughout life. the anxiety of first impressions must be monumental for her. ultimately, i think she loves being beautiful, but its probably an often bittersweet kind of thing. i think she's been able to see the darker depths of human nature as a result. i think she feels a bit defensive about her looks; part of her may even resent what it does to those around her. but paradoxically, i think she needs to feel beautiful.

i think she's a sweet person. i think she cares deeply about others' happiness, despite potentially being a bit aloof? i mean, i remember reading david kahne write that she was always riding the subway late at night by herself. so her being ~weird~ and aloof may be due to a self reflective nature. i also think she's a bit of a narcissist (which unfortunately, seems to be correlated with introversion). this comes back to her dual personality: she often seems insecure, awkward, and nervous. yet she knows that she's beautiful. she knows that she's smart, and she knows that she's talented. i guess it might be hard to attain a sense of self-security when you've got no fixed personality. but she seems happier and more confident now? i think she's come to feel validation (for her talents, and artistic intuitions) -- and its completely warranted. i think she's happy because people are starting to see how great she is, and now she can work on any kind of project that pops up in her mind without worrying about how it'll be received. i mean, after pussy cola, she can kind of do whatever the fuck she wants right?

i dunno what else to say at the moment. a lot of what i feel that i know about her may just be random, abstract comprehensions mixed with vague projections. i guess she seems rather complicated. or simple, maybe? i dunno. but despite everything, i like to think she's as real as they come in this particular industry.

also, if any of you are into jungian typology, i'm fairly certain that she's an INFP
  22. Agnese13 liked a post in a topic by M.I.A. in Lana's Inspirations & Influences
Oh this is a thread for me since I am collecting her inspirations for a long time now.

Well first , lets talk about her music inspirations .
She loves the 'masters of every genre' . She loves Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen , Eminem , Biggie Smalls , Britney Spears and Nirvana . She is also a huge fan of Anthony and the Johnsons , the Crystal Method , The Beach Boys , Nina Simone , Elvis Presley , Chris Isaak , Bruce Springsteen and Jeff Buckley .
She always listens to the same songs over and over again . The first single she ever bought was Coolios Gangsters Paradise .

Her lyrical inspirations would be Allen Ginsberg and the other Beat poets , Walt Whitman  , Albert Camus and Sartre. She mentioned the last two in an interview and posted quotes of them . Allen Ginsbergs Howl was her introduction to the world of poetry and she said it changed her live , she is transporting a copy of it in her pocket . Cute , isnt it ?
She also loves self-help books like The Master Key System . Lolita the book and the movie is also a huge inspiration of hers.

She generally loves the 50s, 60s and 20s . Fashion icons are Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall .
Oh , her favourite movies are The Godfather 1 and 2 , American Beauty (the soundtrack influenced Born To Die a lot) , Sin City , Virgin Suicide and Scarface.

And also this is a fitting quote of hers .

    /close this thread .
    Any questions ?
