I think I understand why I loved this album when I heard it, when a lot of you disliked it. I might be wrong but I guess it's because I haven't heard any leaks from this era till 1 week after its release, so everything was 100% new to my hears. And now that I heard the whole leaked session I understand all the differences between the album versions you knew before and the released ones, the choice of the tracklist frustration etc.
So, I think when your disappointment will disappear you might hear Portals for what it simply is, a great record.

god this album is tew good!! and the deluxe tracks are really hitting the spot for me. 

I'm fairly certain Melanie had a strong concept for the maze/labyrinth imagery since 2020 at latest.
 
As we've established, Maze was written and recorded during After School sessions, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was also an early idea for Portals; like Light Shower and Womb. And of course we can't forget the two Labyrinth songs produced by One Love in 2020 and 2021. None of those three made it to Portals, but Spider Web does have the lyric "Better off dead than stuck in a maze"— so the concept didn't completely die.
 
She was also singing about synchronicities dating back to 2019, but surprisingly we didn't get any mentions of that on the final album.

tbh it's just the first and second verse for stylistic choices (a bad choice) but it's sadly on purpose i think  it makes the chorus hit extra hard tho

I think the new production elements are really cute but the mixing is... an interesting choice. It's just so quiet because it's missing mids. I personally took the track into FL Studio and used Parametric EQ 2 to up the high end, bump the low, and adjust the mids to be a bit cleaner (same as I did for The Contortionist and a few other tracks I otherwise liked) as well as layering in the old riser. 

I’ve  learned to love it  I really like that like squealing tire(?) sound on ‘hill they climbed’ and it travels from right to left channel.
