    8TH PLACE

    TV In Black & White
    New Entry (220)

If you get lonely, think of me only
Prison isn’t going to keep me from you
Remember Coney Island and how we’d
Wade into the water ‘til the waves turned blue

Nobody does have to know that our love’s alive
Keep it on the low, if you want to hide
Got that same address if you want to write
One/On Greenwich Avenue, wishing and thinking of you

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

If you get lonely, think of this only
    Heaven hasn’t forgotten about you
Though you can’t hold me, pick up and phone me
Use your one phone call on your ex-girl boo

I won’t tell a single soul how you spend your nights
In that single cell, holding your pillow tight
If you really are afraid, then you ought to know
That you’re the one I want, the one I want forevermore

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

I know you get scared sometimes, boy
Nothing to be feared when you’re in my heart
Troubles come in threes, but in your case
They came in millions and trillions, but that’s alright

Living without you is like TV in black and white
You turned me on and brought color into my life
When I’m around you, suddenly I realize
That I was blind before I saw the world through your eyes

i definitely thought of never let me go when i listened to this song but this one does seem happier. i feel like this song is about a more stable relationship where they're having fun and it's light and happy whereas nlmg deals with a less stable relationship where she needs confirmation that he'll stay with her. oow seems more like they were in a rougher place before but now they're good and happy, compared to nlmg where she's worried things could be going downhill. but i love the instrumental of both songs a lot

First of all, my knees are getting weak hearing this electric piano play throughout the song. I really am a sucker for electric pianos. They sound so cute, yet seductive in opposite to their intangible and majestic sounding ancestors: acoustic pianos. Why did they have to use a (sampled) acoustic piano in the outro?  I think this sort of mirrors Lizzy Grant(/Lana Del Rey), though. Cute, yet seductive. I'm not sure but are there two guitars playing? One acoustic guitar and one electric guitar? Do I see a patter there?

Let's just say... if I were Twin Peaks' Audrey (in drag), I'd want this song played by that jukebox. And I'd certainly dance away like this, get lost and stumble over something like I usually do. "On Our Way" is totally an 11pm "let's just play one more" jukebox kinda song. It's not necessarily the kind of song that would make me stay. Rather the kind of song I'd listen to before leaving, but one that stays in your ear while you're driving through the dark forrest surrounding Twin Peaks. It has this "we are on the way" kind of quality to it because, well, we are "On Our Way."   Sure, not necessarily physically but I really get this traveling vibe from it.

As for its lyrical content, I think @@lola pointed that out really well. There is quite nobody else that could get away with something like this, because it is Lizzy Grant/Lana Del Rey/You Name It through and through. Yes, I cringe so bad when I hear your random YouTube girl do a guitar cover of a Lana song like this. Because n o! I don't see this girl do anything mentioned in the song. I just don't because it's a Lana Del Rey thing to do. End of story.

I really like this Song of the Week idea.

maybe she's gotten over wanting to be dominated. all of her other boyfriends were older and "kind of" bad boy types, maybe she's learned from those relationships not working out

    so true

i also kind of love the "whyyy do i think too much" juxtaposed with the 'pink lip gloss' line, and the footage of her looking like a blonde bimbo in the tranny wig lel

its kind of funny too that she says "you tell me not to worry, cause you're the boss", etc because doesn't it seem like she's the more dominant presence in her relationship with barrie? she holds the economic reigns, she drives them everywhere, he brings and lights her cigarettes on stage, etc lmao i know those are all minor things and we don't really know what their relationship is actually like but i guess i just can't imagine barrie being very ~aggressive w/ her the way she seems to 'prefer' in her songs. i don't know if thats all part of a character or if its just another one of her strange paradoxes

I really love On Our Way, I think it's a great example of one of the main reasons why I love Lana. She's not really a genius poet, singer or guitar player (heh) but her lyrics are extremely personal. And not only because of how much she opens up in them but how much personality they show. I don't think a lot of songwriters could get away with writing about Chevrolets all the time or picking up cheap lip gloss form K-Mart but I like it with Lana because I know that's her whole style and every time she mentions little things like that I feel like I'm getting to know her more and more. This probably one of the reasons why I don't like people covering her songs, it just sounds weird hearing some random girl on the internet say things only Lana would say. I think there are a lot of musicians who are either great poets or who have mastered their instrument but I'll never be nearly as invested in them because they don't show any personality in their songs even if they objectively are talented.

i think, visually, it's beautiful (excluding a lot of the gods and monsters part, some of that was a little too much for me). most of it is undeniably very pretty. how great the rest of it is is arguable. i can see how a lot of people wouldn't enjoy it. tropico does not fit everyone's taste -- then again, neither does lana's music. i liked the poetry she recited, although i didn't know the authors and stuff while watching it but i just looked up the poems and i plan on watching tropico again later now that i have more insight. i think it was a beautiful and meaningful film although there are some things i would have done differently, such as some of the g&m scenes and i wish there had been more dialogue. but overall i definitely think lana achieved her goal.

This is why artists have to endure so much bullshit (because that's exactly what it is) when they share their projects with the public, because now it's all about success being defined by the number of views and monetary worth, along with the nitpicking and pointless comparisons of who-does-what-better, which leaves zero room for art to be appreciated for what it is.

Because she can, and she wanted to, so she did.

You mean, besides because she could, wanted to, and did? "Because fuck you, that's why."

"Summertime Sadness" is almost two-years-old, there's a contradiction here if we're going to talk about old songs being used for recent projects. So if "Young & Beautiful" and Cedric Gervais' remix of "Summertime Sadness" (keyword "remix" of a song that is, again, almost two-years-old, TWO-YEARS-OLD,) were to have been featured in Tropico instead, it would have validated Tropico's worth as a 30-minute film? It was a short-film, let's not over-exaggerate here like it was a grueling four-hour loop of the same songs over and over again.

On what basis are we comparing Tropico to that it can be fairly dictated that it wasn't good? Tropico wasn't meant to be a revolutionary short-film, it was simply a short-film telling the story of redemption with the intention of bringing the era of BTD to a close. Just because Tropico may have been a bit difficult to follow the first viewing, does not mean it wasn't good; just because Tropico was "awkwardly literal," doesn't mean it wasn't good (not to mention, it may have been "literal," but I want to know where it was "awkward.") And just because there wasn't enough dialogue between the cast, just because there was only one Lana-written monologue, doesn't mean that Tropico wasn't good. If anything, Lana's reading of an excerpt from Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric" solidified and clarified the meaning behind "Body Electric". I look at that song in a totally different light after Tropico.

And Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" was a well-placed reading, as it helped smoothly transition between the final moments of Eden and the dead-paradise-reality Lana found herself in during "Gods & Monsters". Did we not read these poems? Did we not read a single poem from the likes of those two men? I'm trying hard to not say that this is a matter of appreciating Tropico more if we weren't so absorbed in the elements of mainstream artists' work, but seriously, let's not write off an artists' work just because we may not have understood it fully.

The cinematography was beautiful all throughout Tropico, and if anything, the short-film shed light on the inner-workings behind Lana's work, we got insight to how and where she finds her muse, we had a-chance-a-minute for a half-hour to open our minds and go on a small little adventure with Lana; it was beautifully strange and strangely beautiful. And this is coming from someone who didn't entirely care for "Body Electric," "Gods & Monsters," and "Bel Air," and I still think that Tropico is being seriously underrated, whether it was meant to cater to the masses or not. For what Tropico is, it is very beautiful, and it's not being given a fair chance (which seems to be a reoccurring theme with the general public when it comes to Lana.)

Well, this answered my question when I asked on what basis we were comparing Tropico to, if not indirectly, since this seems to be a biased comparison between two artists who, aside from starting out in New York, have hardly anything in common as far as sound, personality, influences and delivery go. If you had not spent the half-hour thinking of all the "very Gaga/not-so-Gaga" comparisons you could've came up with instead of letting yourself be immersed in Tropico, maybe you would have seen both Lana and her short-film in a different light. Not to mention I hardly see any element of Tropico that is even closely similar to Gaga's projects, so...is this because you're bored and had a quota to reach?

But never mind that, it's quite pitiful that comparisons like this are pretty much what structures art today. So much effort is invested into finding likeness in art that we forget to appreciate art as it is; a multi-dimensional form of expression that does not need to be compared to the likeness of another artist's expression to dictate its worth. Had you been around when Picasso was, all his art would've been Tropico to you just because it wasn't Da Vinci or Michelangelo.

You didn't care for Tropico not because it "wasn't good" or because it was "bloated and awkwardly literal."

You didn't care for Tropico not because the songs were "old" and "less-than-stellar."

You didn't care for Tropico not because it was a poor-shot at "being Gaga."

You didn't care for Tropico because you misunderstood Lana, but most especially, because you misunderstood art.

Besides that, comparing female artists to the likes of Gaga is very 2010, so "for 2014," you might want to find another artist to set your unreasonably supported expectations for other artists to or just stop with the comparisons altogether since it's as old as it is unfair, and hardly what art is about.

And with that, I call this whole listing a flop.

this is making me rethink my previous comment -- i don't think the relationship in this song is as happy and stable as i thought before. i kind of overlooked the whole "you're the boss" thing. it really does sound regretful when she says it at the end. if it weren't for that one line, this song would seem more like a carefree and happy love song. the way she sings "because you're the boss" at the very end makes me feel like it's almost a cry for help, like everyone thinks they're so happy and in love but secretly she wants out. i could be overthinking it like maybe it is just a line but that's what i was kind of getting from it after listening again.

I just listened to On Our Way several times and I simply love it. It reminds me of long hot summer nights. You wear no make up and your hair is wavy and sun-touched. You still wear a bikini under your clothes and your skin is brown and shimmering. You spend a lot of time with your boyfriend driving around in his Chevrolet and you just feel free and loved.

My description above was the first image that popped up in my mind but listening more closely you can somehow feel that sadcore thing. Maybe because it's the end of the summer or maybe if you go even further the end of summer also marks the end of Lana's relationship because he is the boss and decided so. Just like they had an affair and know each other damn well and Lana wanted them to be a couple and he agreed for one summer. Desperate as Lana sometimes seems to be when it comes to men who leave her she just lived in the moment for one summer and didn't think about their soon end.

She probably wanted to write a happy song but couldn't get rid off a sad subliminal tone because her subconscious reminded her of the truth.

Maybe my Lanalysis goes a little far
