I just hate how a lot of these reviewers personally vilify Lana. There's a difference between reviewing someone's music and explicitly attacking someone; I feel that a lot of Lana's critics overstep this boundary. I wonder what their views of her music would be if Lana released it anonymously.

How are these people even allowed near a keyboard?

I think at her core from way back then, its seems like Lana has always been one to seek out places of peace and refuge. Even if they were temporary. Which is why she seemed to move around a lot. From alcohol to multiple relationships. And like anyone who can relate, usually the cause of this restlessness links itself back to people's home life. & How they grew up. I mean she mentioned the fact that when Video Games started picking up, she hadnt seen or heard from her father in 6 years. Plus when you add up her parents sending her off to boarding school, it starts to make sense. Aside from other personal things. & So when you couple that with the criticism she receives from one of the places shes seeking acceptance the most, i can see why she would feel the way she does. But her love for music and fans is what keeps her doing music. The moment shes able to receive closure and peace from things shes dealt with back then, then i can see her truly being a peace a little more.

I shouldn't of read this. Part of me is seriously worried she'll do something drastic. It quite obvious she's suffering with depression. I feel so bad now for her and quite guilty. I want new music but not if it makes Lana feel this bad....

“People say to the mentally ill, ‘You know so many people think the world of you.’ But when they don’t like themselves they don’t notice anything. They don’t care about what people think of them. When you hate yourself, whatever people say it doesn’t make sense. ‘Why do they like me? Why do they care about me?’ Because you don’t care about yourself at all.” - Richey Edwards

This interview made me really, really sad. But if I'm being honest, it doesn't surprise me all that much. What does surprise me, however, is how open she is being here. And depending on how you look at it, this can be a good or a bad thing. As a fan it's quite... uncomfortable in a way, because here I am admiring her voice, her talent, uniqueness, songwriting abilities meanwhile.... she just doesn't love herself as much as we expect her to. Remember what she said in a recent interview: 'it's just sad because they care and I just don't..' I do believe she's struggling. I genuinely think she is hurting. Just because she has a platform of fame now, some money in her pocket, a "very large family" and a lot of people around her, doesn't mean she isn't struggling. I wish her true happiness. I wish I could be a part of that but it looks like it's too much of a far stretch.

Also, the comments under that Guardian article really discouraged me. I mean.... really? Some of those people don't know what they're talking about. Hey, we can all have our opinions and it's fine if you think she's this way and that way or her music 'sucks' or whatever - okay, cool. Your problem, not mine, but blatantly disregarding her emotions and invalidating her struggles because she is famous? "poor little rich girl" is what they think. What people need to realize is that mental illness is just that: mental illness. It does not discriminate - when will people understand this? They don't get it, man. They don't get it

Feminists don't want to dictate the decisions of other women--they want all women to be able to make their own decisions. And I really emphasize all women because most people who are quick to cast off feminism as a silly, in-your-face fad are those who are satisfied with their rights and seem to forget the millions of women who don't live in America or Europe and don't have these rights, and whose very lives are often threatened by misogyny. These women are one of the main reasons why we need feminism, because nothing else is helping them. Feminism's goal is to ensure that every woman is able to live her life the way she wants it and make her own choices without any fear of misogynistic backlash. So feminism would applaud Lana's individuality and independence as a female and an artist, not condemn it.

I honestly think Lana's biggest fault to her social/feminist critics is her extreme solipsism. She refuses to see/admit to seeing a world outside of her own extremely subjective experience, which goes against everything a so-called progressive is supposed to be about in 2014. She has turned her back on objectivity and pluralism. But my hunch is that this is entirely intentional, and might have something to do with rejecting her background in 'metaphysics' in favor of something more like a personal, self-engineered mythology, a intensely individualistic belief system she created post-college/pre-LDR. The point is, I am sure Lizzy Grant is aware of a world beyond her own, but as Lana Del Rey, she must never betray this, even when it creates headlines such as these. There's no way she's actually that myopic. It's defiance. It's also a way to maintain an alienated stance, which benefits her art.

I just said this in response to this (decent) Consequence of Sound piece, actually:

'She is master and commander of her own submissive exploration of femininity and psychology. Honestly, I can’t think of anything more liberated than that. She is comfortable enough in her own skin to explore masochism. There is true power in psychological surrender, and she gets that. She is operating on a totally different level, unconcerned with the cycle of world news and SJW think pieces.'

Also, hi everyone. First post here. Excited for Ultraviolence.

Honestly this fanbase can be so embarrassing. I know we take pride in Lana sorta science (except more like science fiction) background, but this assumption that she's simply "too deep and complicated for every journalist she's ever encountered so how could they possibly get her" is just silly. She's not a hardline feminist, cool. You do you, and frankly I'm not going to stop listening to her for it, despite feeling very passionately about it myself.

    BUT THE TRUTH IS:
She did this headline to herself. There was a more evenhanded way to approach it and she knows it. She was trying to sound tragic and inward, and I guess she did, but she also sounded super ignorant too. Of course you, as a rich white popstar in 2014, are unmoved by feminism. But something tells me if she actually had to live Marilyn's life, she'd want some more of it. All it says to me is that she's looking at it from an extremely selfish point of view. "I don't feel like I need feminsm because I feel free" is all good and well when you are apart of one of the most free demographics in the world. She says "let's talk about science" but how many girls (especially non-white and non-western girls) are shut out and pushed away from being interested in science? There are lots of feminists talking about that. That's intersectionality, Lizzy.

And attempting to drag people for thinking she sounds dumb juts makes you sound x2 worse tbh. "I bet you didn't know about feminism before tumblr" isn't even a fucking insult. I've personally been a feminist for a long time, but god forbid people actually learn about something useful on the fucking internet.

It hurts me to know she is depressed. Hope Barrie can be a good man to our girl and that she finds comfort in love and friendship. I have been depressed my whole life... I truly love and care for LDR. Such a sweet lady who should never shed tears of sadness.
