  2. Omg I was literally thinking that earlier today!!! Lana molding her own form of songs like Put Me In A Spell and Agony would be so fucking cool. It’s so atmospheric and has that characteristic melancholy, too
  3. I think Lana making her own version of a shoegaze record with Mike Dean would be a cultural collapse—in a good way. I know shoegaze can be really hit or miss for people, but..Reverb-heavy vocals, fuzzy & atmospheric guitars, and Dean’s history with synths & psychedelia elements? A gay can dream
  4. This could largely be a personal preference, but I’m not a huge fan of Thunder…mostly because of the lyrics. I feel like she’s expressed the same sentiments in other songs, and this wouldn’t necessarily bother me if the writing wasn’t already extremely similar to pieces she’s written in the past…almost down to the same wording. I often like when she recycles old motifs and integrates them in new ways, but I personally feel that Thunder—while very airy and sonically easy to listen to—doesn’t really do her songwriting skills justice. The track can also be incredibly repetitive, and the details of their relationship feel vague and impersonal at times. That’s just me though, and I realize that’s my own subjective perception of the track lol

    Lorde

My opinions could certainly change after a few more listens of the album, but.. While this is definitely my least favorite release from Lorde, I really enjoyed how well the production evoked this summery haze to center the record around. The melodies mirrored the slow sprawling of the instrumentation by sometimes drifting outside of the song’s scale. Though this created really interesting melodies at times, they (personally) often felt overly undefined, and that lack of definition made several of the tracks less than memorable for me. Lyrically, there are moments where you really appreciate her use of satire (like in Mood Ring) and the frank, irreverent expression of self running throughout the record. That being said, I sometimes felt that lyrics across different tracks unintentionally mimicked cliches and could be oddly vague as well. Vocally, I like that she experimented with her voice a bit more, especially in her higher register. There were several instances of breathy vocal layerings that gave the tracks more fullness, and some of those layerings reminded me a bit of Lana’s music as well. Overall, I’m pretty letdown, but the album just came out, so I’ll give it time

    Lorde

As a longtime Lorde fan, I really wish I was connecting to her singles more—especially considering she seems to be in such a lighthearted, present-tense headspace I don’t have a ton to say about the singles other than they’re perfect for a psychedelic trip, and I can see where Lorde cited psychedelics as an influence for the record This is just a personal preference, but I do wish that the subjects she mentions in passing (existentialism, aging, etc.) were delved into a bit more. While I love the idea of this trippy, stream of consciousness style of writing, I sometimes feel that the distinctions between the tracks and their meanings become a bit blurred edit: that being said, I will probably listen to this album a million times until I feel like I’ve received the record the way Lorde intended; I’m just having a hard time getting there currently lol
  7. Well, in a live performance of Get Free, she added, “‘Cause they were caught up in the dance/Of cruel romance.” I would assume she’s suggesting that others never got to “fly” (or be free) because they were in harmful relationships, and that fits with the overall theme of the track as well
  8. Blue Banisters •Blue Banisters •Frail •Text Book •Arcadia •Hospital Bracelet •Winter at Fordham •God Complex •Underground •Heroin (Reprise) •Somewhere Past Andromeda •Wildflower Wildfire
  9. i had 3 weed edibles & don’t have access to editing software past apps like PicCollage, so here’s a *very* rough concept of an idea I had for the alleged Arcadia lol
  10. Also random but so far this record is giving me major Fine China x Heroin x Yayo x HIADT…BIHI vibes
  11. When I hear the title, I immediately imagine something like this, and it’s not exactly the most…exciting visual. Then again, maybe Blue Banisters as a title is indicative of something akin to a concept album where the banisters are a stable & central theme throughout (which is honestly pretty cool). I’m pretty neutral about the title, but in my subjective opinion, I think a record named Arcadia would be really neat
  12. While I think that Blue Banisters as a title is neither objectively bad nor good, it’s definitely distinct from her past few records For me, Blue Banisters feels way more tangible and specific, whereas her past records typically just evoke a specific mood or atmosphere (Ultraviolence, Honeymoon, etc.). I think that Blue Banisters will make more sense as she unfolds how the symbolism is pertinent to the record, but it’s really difficult to tell. Maybe the entire record is highly centered around her past hurt and how she’s healing from it by repainting her banisters? But what’s the significance of the colors? Idk lol
  13. truthfully, idc if Arcadia is fake or not—I just need some hype and distraction until we get another announcement/single lol
  14. I was thinking this as well! She tends to work well in advance, so maybe her recent visuals are closer to the “future work” Mike Dean mentioned? The alleged tracklist scrapping makes this a lot more complicated, but it’s definitely adding to the suspense lol
  15. Not to distract from the discourse, but.. It’s really striking how the BB triple singles read like they were torn straight from her diary and that she’s almost reading them to you in the same room I think approaching the record as a diary would be a really cool concept (especially with the more lowkey, minimalist production), but that’s just me. It would be a perfect opportunity to add something like the interlude of Burnt Norton, too
  16. It lowkey looks like she’s in a Claire’s lol. Also she needs to drop her skin routine
  17. In Fuck it I love you, I always thought she was saying, “Chances in my veins,” instead of “jazz.” In NFR, I always thought she was saying, “President Morrow, can you know it all?” In Get Free, I thought she was saying, “Gone is the burden of a crawling way of being.” Swan Song is still guesswork for me lol
  18. …..she’s not saying “dancing high”?????? I am in shock lol
  19. my phone is struggling to quote everyone in the same reply, but thank you so much for taking the time to write these!!! I will definitely be listening to them soon @Elle @Veinsineon @vrtvie @BluebirdXO
  20. I want to check out Marina’s music, but I’m really not into upbeat- or happy-sounding songs (lmao). Does anyone have any suggestions?
  21. I think so many people overlooked LFL just because of the weaker tracks and the straying into multiple genres, but tracks like the ones you mentioned (especially Get Free and Heroin) really showcase her chops as a songwriter and emotive vocalist; I’d even argue that Get Free is in her Top 10 songs of all time
  22. I think LDR9 is going to have a noticeable sonic shift compared to her last 2 records (assuming Mike Dean will be the main producer). NFR! felt a blend of folk rock with electronic influence, and COCC had heavy singer-songwriter vibes with touches of country. While it’s a bit early to tell, Blue Banisters feels very minimalist and lightly tinged with gospel, but the common ground between the last two albums is a more stripped approach (more so with COCC). Mike Dean’s characteristic sound wasn’t super evident on WW, but this may make sense given that Gabe Simon is allegedly the primary producer for most of the tracks. I would love to see Lana utilize Dean’s synth expertise to cook up something in the same vein as Weyes Blood’s and Portishead’s music, but I’m not completely getting my hopes up…yet
  23. FIILY vs French Restaurant
  24. had a Blue Banisters dream last night in the dream, Lana announced the album on Instagram (again lmao), and it was entirely produced by Mike Dean. The album was like Dark But Just A Game mixed with Weyes Blood’s Titanic Rising she didn’t give us a date for the release but it was still a nice dream even if it’s not realistic in the slightest
  25. If Lana were to do a “Part 2” or reprise to any of her songs, which would you pick to be on Blue Banisters? edit: this can also be a song within the record itself—for example, a Part 2 to Blue Banisters (the song).
