Will someone please wake me up when this thread actually gets back on topic about Lana's new album?

I know a guy who interviewed Daniel Heath about Big Eyes yesterday and I got him to sneak in a few questions about his involvement on her next album.

He is sending me the audio from the interview later, so I will let you guys know the tea as soon as I listen.

Nor should listening to -- and liking -- a song about that be considered gay.  (Says one of the 27 other loyal straight male fans.)

I know, but she clearly has considered it for an album title as well.

It was a joke btw, i'll keep stanning even if she names the album "Music to suck dick to"

Short but sweet. Thanks for posting!

I don't "see" her in that way, but I'm reminded of her every day on the way to work. I drive through an area called Rancho Del Rey, and I cross 3 streets that all have "Del Rey" in the name.

I don't think I've posted in this topic, but I finally will. Here's my unpopular opinion: I can't stand the song "Carmen." When I was watching the video of her performance at the iTunes Festival 2 years ago, at one point she was trying to decide what song to do next, and she almost did "Carmen" but then decided to do "Radio" instead. I'm so glad she didn't do "Carmen!"

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure she was "yelling" at her security guards. I think they were trying to get her to leave, and she was like, Hell no, let me keep signing stuff. Then she apologized for yelling, LOL. Go Lana!

    Hey everyone,

I'm curious to see what some of my fellow musicians (instrumental or vocal, doesn't matter) have to say on this topic.

I've heard it said that Lana's voice has gotten stronger since Born To Die came out.  I think Ultraviolence is certainly proof of that.  But one thing I've also noticed is that her vibrato has improved dramatically.

In the beginning, it seemed like it was sometimes shaky and unsteady, and was always kind of fast and fluttery.  The songs on Born To Die had that quality.  Paradise was a small improvement.  You can really only tell when she holds sustained notes.  "American" is a good example.  Take the chorus: "You make me crazy / You make me wiiiii-iiiild..."  On that last held note, you can hear her vibrato, and while it's better than it had been in the past, it's still a bit fast for my taste.  Fast forward to "Young and Beautiful" -- again, a marginal improvement, but still fluttery.  Fast forward again to "Once Upon a Dream," and there's still more improvement.

But, where I noticed the most dramatic change was in the bonus track "Is This Happiness" on Ultraviolence.  When she holds "Is this happineeessssssss". you can really hear a change.  Her vibrato is slower and wider than even on other UV songs.  To me, this is the most beautiful her voice has ever sounded.  I wonder if she had any sort of vocal coaching, or if she just changed on her own, or...?  "Is This Happiness" is definitely my favorite UV track.

    Look forward to discussion

Right with ya there, Irene!  I really wanted the chance to try to meet her, so the Silver VIP was totally worth it to me.

The last (and first) show I saw her at, the one at Hollywood Forever was all general admission. That venue has no seats; it's all grass. I don't think they had VIP packages there, either, so there was no early entrance. We took our chances, but didn't get anywhere near front and center. I figure by getting the Silver VIP, I'm at least increasing my chances.

That's probably how I'll feel after next May, especially if I get to greet her. I'll have had the experience, so next time around, I'll go for regular seats.

Same here. Since we drove 3 hours to LA the last time we saw her, and my wife was not up for getting there early, we ended up arriving around 4:30 for the gates to open at 6 PM. We were pretty far back in the line, and when the gates opened, all hell broke loose. Like you, I want the opportunity to have the front row experience once, and then after that, I think I'd be fine with normal seats.

I guess with the VIP tickets, it becomes a matter of who has the money to spend and wants to spend it, more than who gets there super early. But we don't know how many Silver VIP tickets were sold, either, so there's a chance that non-VIP ticketholders will still get front row pit spots. Just too many variables!

What makes you uncomfortable about the concept? Just curious. There are often times when you pay to meet someone... I guess it's just a matter of whether or not it's worth it to you.

Resurrecting this old topic... I liked how Lana's voice sounded in "Is This Happiness," but having listed to "Big Eyes" and "I Can Fly" a few times now, I find her vibrato even better in "Big Eyes." Two particular spots where it really stands out are both in the second half of the first verse. At 1:15, she hits a fairly high note with the words "trust you," and that one sounds just gorgeous! Then followed by "I was your woman," where on the last syllable of "woman," she sounds really beautiful again. Those two spots give me chills every time I hear them.

Whew!  It was a nailbiter, but I am now the proud owner of 3 Silver VIP tickets to the Chula Vista show!

I say it was a nailbiter because when I came in to work this morning, I learned that our district (I work the IT department in a school district) was under some sort of DDoS attack, and we effectively have no internet access.  Aside from our regular internet connection, we have 2 cable modems that we use for testing purposes.  I connected to the wireless router that's hooked up to one of the cable modems... nothing!  Turns out the cable modem was bad, so I quickly hooked up the router to the other modem, and then had to reboot the modem.  All this happened with less than 5 minutes before the presale started.  I finally got connected, and tried to buy 3 tickets and was told they weren't available.  Then I tried buying 1, and got one.  So I went back twice more and bought 1 ticket each time, but using a different credit card each time.  Wow... the things we do.

Yeah, having seen the videos 2.5 years after and reading about all the backlash and hate, I felt soooo bad for her. I could see that she had already gained a lot of respect, even more so after Ultraviolence came out. I really did not understand the hate that her SNL performance generated. I mean, sure, it wasn't her best performance, but it really wasn't bad, either.

Having listened to both songs several times now, I find myself flip-flopping on my prior opinion. I had liked "I Can Fly" better; now I like "Big Eyes" better. But the sampled/synthesized trumpets in "Big Eyes" really cracks me up. I mean, if Dan Heath could use live strings, couldn't he get a couple of live trumpet players, too??

I've listened to both songs several times now, and I love 'em both! As usual, though, I'm going a bit against the general consensus in saying that I like "I Can Fly" slightly better.
