i just wanted to publicly thank @@Stargirl for being such a kind, graceful, giving, incredible user and woman on this site for (without asking) helping w/ my goals of adding my user onto my signature; if she doesn't win kindest and most friendly and pure user at the lipsters I will fucking riot. I am so late on this, but I finally finished listening to the full album, finishing with Get Free. I was trying to savor a little longer, but couldn't resist. Y'all were right in saying GF has lizzy style focus. I was kind of taken aback about how much the backing vocals sound like her from years ago (unless it is someone else on backing but it sounds exactly like lizzy 2008).
 
About the "for ___ and for ___" lyric--I like the idea some here mentioned about K and J, but I am also not sure if it really fits, considering the lyrics that come right after that basically say she is trying to be happy and free for all of those who weren't able to before they passed away. Considering what we know about K (someone--literal or not--who is on death row for crimes) and J (a violent cult leader/cult-type person), I'm not sure why she would dedicate that sentiment to those people. 
 
I think at least one of these people is Amy Winehouse. Lana has talked before about what Amy/Amy's music meant to her. Probably doesn't need to be said, but for those unfamiliar, Amy became pretty known for music that dealt a lot with sadness, drugs, and unstable relationships, themes that were lifted straight from her personal life. Amy lost her life at 27 due to complications from her addictions. Seeing as how there are parallels in Lana's past music about addiction and unstable/unhealthy relationships, it would make sense why Amy would be included as a sort of honor/inspiration.
 
Also probably worth noting that Amy has a song called October Song--a song about the death of Amy's beloved bird Ava--that includes the lyrics "Ava flies in paradise." Considering how GF includes the "birds of paradise" right after the "for __ and for ___" lyrics--and how October Song is also a song about death--it seems likely Lana was including Amy at least somewhere in Get Free. 
 
It would also go along with what Lana said about not wanting to include things that would end up in the press, since Amy is both still a famous public figure and the LFL release date was just two days before Amy's anniversary of her death, and I could understand Lana's worry that some journalist would try to twist that into making Lana look like she was capitalizing on Amy's death. 

I was actually born in the same hospital on the same day as Lana We mingled in the NICU! I remember..even as a baby, she had a very melodic cry. So I guess you could say I've been a fan of her since day 1 !!! 

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the names Lana censors in Get Free was Lou Reed (or just Lou). It would make sense with the song and I'm sure one of the names was pretty famous or she wouldn't be so addamant about hiding it.

The line "they still feel him here" breaks my heart. I know since it follows the line about Manson that it sounds like she's referring to him, but the fact that the song has to do with a close relation losing their life to heroin ("took your life away"), it reminds me of when someone close to you dies suddenly, and you can still "feel" them everywhere. Not sure if that's relatable...

I honestly think this song was inspired by The Age of Adeline. The story is so similar.
 
The guy sits on a park bench and is going to propose to Adeline but she sees and decides to stand him up and he thinks that she never came.

So I've been had a few thoughts about this album since I first listened to it in full, but decided to let them stew a little in case any other points came to me, and basically I have a feeling that Lana has been getting professional help from some sort of psychologist, counsellor or therapist and was possibly diagnosed with clinical depression and is now on medication. I know others in the past have speculated about her mental health and it has often been quite unhelpful and actually accusatory of Lana as fuelling her own sadness, when in reality she has probably had a serious mental health condition that she wasn't aware she could treat, or perhaps she was aware but didn't seek treatment.
 
She has said that she saw a therapist three times before but found it quite unsuccessful.
 



 
Quite clearly she has had mental health issues in the past (admitting so herself), likely a combination of anxiety and depression, perhaps related to her past substance abuse with drugs and alcohol, that she has openly spoken about.
 
In "Lust for Life", there are a lot of lyrical allusions to this theme, in my opinion, that I wanted to discuss.
 
What first struck me was the song "Heroin", in particular, the following lyrics:
 
"I'm flying to the moon again, dreaming about marzipan
Taking all my medicine to take my thoughts away"
 
I think she's being quite explicit here, in that she is clearly taking some sort of medication that is having an effect on her mindset. A common treatment for anxiety or depressive disorders is obviously through anti-depressant or other similar medications. One could argue that this medicine could be for anything, but I say that because she says it "takes [her] thoughts away" it's clear to me it's not to address any physical/bodily issue, but a psychological one related to mental health.
 
In the outro of Heroin she sings about wanting to make a change for the better, that there's something that "makes [her] head go crazy" and she'd "be lying if [she] said she wasn't sick of it". To me, this is Lana saying that she is willing to admit she has had many problems in the past. And if we look at "Get Free", she seems to admit that she really only has herself to blame for many of these problems.
 
"Like my part was I was not discerning
And you, as we found out, were not in your right mind"
 
Clearly she's had a difficult time discerning when she's in toxic situations/relationships with people not in their "right mind" but is finally coming to acknowledge that and try to make amends to that. It makes sense if you think about what she's said in interviews recently, about trying to finally move on from toxic relationships and take care of herself first and foremost, rather than unhealthy and unhelpful people.
 
When she sings of taking "the dead out of the sea and the darkness from the arts", and wanting to "move out of the black and into the blue", to me, this is her acknowledging she's been severely depressed and is finally ready to "cross the threshold" and make a step towards taking care of herself properly. She also wants this to be translated to her music and art as well, believing she can help others out there. Her "commitment", her "modern manifesto" is to gradually work on changing her mindset and sharing that with "all of us who never got the chance", "for... [insert name] and for... [insert name]". 
 
The chorus of "Get Free" supports this whole idea as well. She feels as if she's "got a war in [her] mind" (as alluded to in "Ride"), but finally admits she "want to get off" from "riding the ride"; a ride that has ultimately worsened her way of thinking.
 
And these lyrics are also really important as well...
"I never really noticed that I had to decide
To play someone's game or live my own life
But now I do, I wanna move"
 
She is finally ready to take control of her life and get her life back together. Also, as a side note, when she sings of rainbows in the second verse, I have this weird idea that she could be thinking back to when she frequently used hallucinogenic drugs in the past, like going on a trip and seeing a wide array of colours, but they're not real, "their arches are illusions" and they "put you in a trance" (a literal, drug-induced trance). The way she sings about drug use on "Heroin" and that line about wanting to "get that cigarette smoke outta my face" on "In My Feelings" seems to me that she is becoming more aware of the harmful impact drugs have had on her life, and she's trying to move away from that. We saw this idea surface on Honeymoon, in "Religion", where she says "it never was about the money or the drugs", relegating them to something insignificant and a waste.
 
Heck, even the official iTunes description for "Lust for Life" talks of how in "Get Free" she "makes a vow to shift her mindset".
 

 
Now, I could be wrong about her having depression (although, I wouldn't say it's that far-fetched considering the highly melancholic tone in most of her work and her admitting she has had to see a therapist before, multiple times as well), but I think that for sure Lana is trying to grow and become the best person she can be through personal commitments to developing her character and living her life healthily. That's why she sings on "Change" about hoping that "by the time summer is done, [she'll] be able to be honest, capable" and so on.
 
Anyway, excuse the Graham4everything length essay... I hope this wasn't a completely incoherent ramble but rather gives a little bit of an insight into my interpretation and understanding of Lust for Life. I genuinely think that Lana is on a path towards complete self-recovery from toxic relationships, a totally negative mindset and the wild, drug-addicted days of her past.

I think that people are kinda forcing the "LANA IS HAPPY NOW!!" narrative... Lana probably has some form of clinical depression, and it's likely she's not just "cured" of that. She still sounds melancholy. This record may be lighter in mood than her other material but I'm not sure that she's all rainbows and sunshine now. She seems like she's in a better place and I think we should accept that instead of forcing L4L to be her "happy" record

I finally understand 'Love' ! I literally got all dressed up just to spend the night with this guy in his car! We didn't need to go anywhere else

[Edit: I feel like a bit of a downer posting that, so I should put t it into context. When I started buying music, cassettes and vinyl albums cost pretty much the same, and while adults bought cassettes because they could be played in a car, I was just a kid, so the reason I would choose the cassette was because I could smuggle it into my home without my parents discovering I'd 'wasted money' on some record that they couldn't see any value in. So I have a warm place in my heart for cassettes, and their little 'tone burst' at the beginning, and the occasional feeling of sea sickness as the tape stretched and sped up and slowed down slightly. And I still have boxes full of these damn things - some of which have never been released in any other form and that I haven't ever found even uploaded to Youtube, and which I hope to digitise one day. But I will always be curious what it is about them that people who have grown up with easily downloadable music - where there's no need to 'hide' music from your parents in physical form - would want to own, aside from their novelty.]
