I'm only a mild fan of OB, but I'm glad the world is finally waking up to Lana's work and giving her the props she deserves.

Arcadia is her most underrated song

The problem is the production, Piano just changes the song a bit and vibe. The original guitars and instruments were just gold.   It’s still good, but the original can’t really be touched, John Denver is always going to be superior. I fear Lana won’t be stopped until she’s turned every classic into a Piano lullaby.

As I see it, there's no use doing a cover of a genuine, certified classic, especially of an American radio classic, if you don't feel it and don't think you can bring something genuine and fresh to it. That's the whole problem with covers. Linda Ronstadt was the classic covers artist of the 70s and she brought it almost all the time, even into the 80s with her immaculate covers of The Moon's A Harsh Mistress and Anyone Who Had a Heart. Even the old 70s semi-schlock classic Wildfire by Michael Murphy, for example. If you're going to cover a song like that, you'd better be ready to bring it, to bring the magical emotion that makes the entire song, because comparisons are going to be immediate. The same is true of movies remakes, with recent failures-at-the-box-office like Ben-Hur and Westside Story.

Simon & Garfunkel are top-drawer Americana, foolhearty  to attempt, as I see it.

I'd like to see Lana cover Lilac Wine, but not if she doesn't relate to it or can't feel it. I find about half her covers flat, lackluster. Even Season of the Witch lacked the punch of the original for me, and there's so much brooding spookiness in that song. I don't think she understood the song. I didn't see much effort put into it, anymore than has gone into CRTMH. The sad thing about her CRTMH is that, with all the touring, Lana no doubt knows that feeling very very well—she as much said so in the new interview.

As always, I'm happy for those who enjoy it and hear something different than I do.

    Thanks.

I love ‘Arcadia.’ Like so much of BB, it’s underrated. I’d take it any day over 9/10ths of OB.

Kinda breaks my heart the fact that there's not some bigger celebration regarding this record. Hope it will be more recognised in the times to come, though.

Personally, I can't imagine how any Lana Stan could hear 'Arcadia,' 'Black Bathing Suit,' 'IYLDWM,' 'Violets For Roses,' 'WFWF,' ' and 'Text Book' and not respond enthusiastically and deeply, even if 'Black Bathing Suit' is on the fun upbeat side---it's a pure pop song. 'Dealer' is fun and doesn't try to be anything other than what it is. The other previously-leaked songs are some of her best from that catalog, even if they were "ripped off Youtube" and weren't remastered, etc. (or not).

We all agree there's no accounting for taste. But. The entire BB album being thought of a third-rate musically lyrically, and in terms of her voice and performance reminds me of how a great deal of people don't respond to '13 Beaches' and/or 'Heroin,' and prefer (to me) unchallenging songs like 'Love Song' or 'How to Disappear.'

I DO think there's been a lot of bandwagon-jumping with this album, in this case, jumping off instead of on. It's almost as if an initial "buzz" goes out into the ether, collective unconscious, or wider world (including TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, other Lana boards, etc.), which is Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down, and a great many people are swayed by that and remain so. Study advertising, sociology, and psychology if you want to learn how the majority of people in any given situation can be swayed to like, hate, or support almost anything, from witchcraft in Europe and early America or the rise of Hitler, Trump, or Biden. And NO—I'm not comparing those who love Norman and OC to Hitler or Trump.

We saw that with Norman and we see it again now with Ocean Boulevard, both in the affirmative.

The truth is no one knows exactly how it works but advertisers are nonetheless able to harness it. I'm not saying it's done with intent or purpose with Lana or Lorde or 21 Pilots—it's a spontaneous and mysterious process.

And yes, I'm as subject to it as anyone else. That's one of the points of life, NOT to be manipulated by media, the majority, and your own unconscious processes.

I also prefer the other version of Thunder, what I call the 50s-style version, but I've just added it to the album in iTunes.

Why not a witchy album. Her sound on lfl was first something witchy, but she scrapped that. I think she could bring this energy back, i have to think on the poetry in motion chorus. I have this feeling with nfr she was leaving this path and now it could be the time to develop this sound from early lfl

Ob is too wordy for me. I wish she could reintegrate spiritual references, colors, metaphors and secretful Passages, 13 beaches lyricism was like heaven.
