I can relate to a lot of your points, especially 1, 6, and 8, and, to a lesser degree, 7, though it's been on OB that I feel my connection with breaking Lana for the first time, which is sad for me.

I know that artists don't necessarily progress and get better and better with each album, painting, play, film, poem, or book, but I can only relate in the most general way to songs like 'Sweet,' 'Margaret,' 'The Grants,' and 'Grandfather.' The distance from her material on early songs like 'Summertime Sadness' is what I loved--we even find it on 'late' unreleased tracks like 'Serene Queen'--but it seems that's a part of her artistry she's moved away from on OB.

Of course, I respect her right to do whatever she wants to do, whatever she wants to explore, 100%.

maybe I've overlistened btd too much, there are not many songs I still want to listen, but for the first time it is of course overwhelming

I like your ranking. Honeymoon and lfl are on my top 3 too. I am surprised about your low ranking for ob, but i agree, there are a few songs i love, but in General it is too empty. Only with your low ranking for btd i am not agreeing. It is a timeless classic for me.

I'm surprised by myself for this ranking. OB has some of her best songs and it's still a good album, but it also feels a bit 'empty' for me and I don't like the production on some songs.

I'm sorry but I will die for Cola and Ride, the entirety of paradise and its videos. I don't care how "problematic" they are. If you don't get it you just don't get it.

Nothing about the Ride music video is problematic
Also Jessica Lange isn’t even a singer, it was just for the show lmao it’s not that serious

your take about jessica lange's cover of gods and monsters is such a NO   i'm more bothered by that than your take on the paradise EP

    1. Title track is the best song from NFR
    2. I don’t know if this is unpopular but I miss the produced music videos… the only MVs I really like from her are BTD-Paradise ones and maybe Shades of Cool
    3. Also don’t know if it’s actually unpopular but the hair colours that best fit her are red hair and the black one (both also from BTD-Paradise era)
    4. I miss gangsta Nancy Sinatra (although I love her recent songs too) and I really disagree with those who say that it’s 100% in the past and she’ll not do songs like that anymore… I can really see her doing songs like her unreleased ones if she’s just in the mood to do so… I don’t think she necessarily takes her art so seriously (or as seriously as some of her fans )
    5. I didn’t know it was so unpopular until I started commenting on this forum but I think Venice Bitch is a skip
    6. Fuck It I love you is better than The Greatest
    7. her best lead single is COCC

the experimental nature and shifting to new sounds but not fully delving into those sounds is what makes lfl and ob "transitional" records. nfr, cotcc, and bb, while all having their own distinct sounds do all fall into this folky, joni mitchell-esque sonic landscape. OB has songs that fall into that but also moves away from it on songs such as a&w, peppers, taco truck, paris, texas, and fishtail.

yes, I agree that you only truly know if something is "transitional" in hindsight, but you can also make predictions and have a feeling about a shift in her art without 100% knowing. I mean the idea of sampling venice bitch at the very end of the record and having the last lyric be "signing off bang bang kiss kiss" seems to heavily imply the closing of a chapter that started with nfr. get free at the end of lfl does the same thing, referencing ride and then literally transitioning into the opening track of nfr.

A record can be transitional and also be its's own statement, it's not mutually exclusive, in fact, transitional records in artist's careers often have their strongest statements about who they want to be seen as as an artist, think of taylor swift's red, or tyler the creator's flower boy, i would consider both of those "transitional records" but that doesn't mean they don't have a strong statement, i mean, those albums are some of their most critically acclaimed, as is ocean blvd. Ocean blvd actually very clearly hs a statement about looking into one's past, healing, and moving forward, which from that you can infer she has let go and wants to move into a new head space by the end of taco truck.

Lfl was a transitional record then we got NFR/Chemtrails/bb which even though have their own distinct sounds, are very similar in a lot of ways (like btd, uv, honeymoon) and now Ocean Blvd seems to be a transitional record moving into a new sonic landscape/headspace… it’s not hard to understand
