So, I'm sayin', "Goodbye, goodbye"
Watch me shine like a star, like a star in the sky (Ah)
Now I'm leavin' you behind, behind
Literally this is preschool writing

She went from songs with the prettiest most thoughtful lyrics, like Obsessions, Valley of the Dolls, or Happy, to…
Yeah I’m a Butterfly
Im Already High!
Watch my life go Bling! Bling!

great gowns beautiful gowns....
she clearly wants to make colourful empowerment songs... why can't she do the appropriate production for it with less on the nose lyrics? where's the sophistication, class and elegance? something like jessie ware... do well written, sexy, mature and empowering disco bops? i'd have said she could pull it off easy as FROOT was really close, but maybe she just doesn't have the vernacular or range anymore...

okay, so... i decided to listen to the song, and i'm only 1 minute in, and... it's bad! i agree with everything @111 is saying i fear...
her vocals sound really robotic, instrumental is too polished, yet very bland and uninspired, also... don't even get me started on the high-pitched vocals which i'm pretty sure are just sung by a kid, horrible artistic choice and genuinely painful to listen to
i think fans have every reason to be upset about the fact that an artist they loved, who once made genuinely insightful, interesting songs, like are you satisfied?, obsessions, mowgli's road, state of dreaming, and valley of the dolls, is now making cringy, derivate songs which are meant to be "empowering" but say absolutely nothing new, inspiring, or beneficial to anyone, which is exactly what the entertainment industry tries to sell to people, especially women, while providing nothing of substance how unfortunate! i can't see them playing this monotonously and mindlessly over the speakers of forever21 while people buy their cheap ugly polyester dresses due to the high-pitched kid vocals... maybe they could try justice instead!
her singing voice is too beautiful for shit like this

Pretty much agree with all of you said. Minimal production is tricky because if the lyrics don’t click or the melody isn’t all that, then there’s nothing else to rely on with the song, for you to love it. Like I’ve said many times, Carmen and Art Deco aren’t lyrics I connect to at all (nothing in my life resonates with them), but I don’t skip them either because both productions are amazing. The songs I don’t care about lyrically on COcC and BB, well it’s hard not to skip them. There aren’t that many but still.

Just finished listening to the album and wow, that was amazing I respect her for taking the experimental route when everyone thought that they had her figured out. It's also certainly one way to scare away fake fans
Fav tracks: Etienne, Thatorchia, Amber Waves

This album is actually so incredible and atmospheric. Tbh I get that it isn’t some people’s thing but to me, it is such a signature Ethel record. Like almost every song on this record sounds like it stems from something unreleased or on PD. Genuinely convinced anyone shocked or truly turned off by this record hasn’t listened to anything besides her top 5 songs on Spotify lmao.
My current top tracks are…
1. Perverts
2. Onanist
3. Vacillator
4. Amber Waves
