i think this song is beautiful. it's similar to black beauty, but it's more poetic than descriptive. i think the idea behind the song is that she is relating the deterioration of her life and her lover's life to the deterioration of beaches on the east coast. these places were once full of such joy and youth and a type of ignorant innocence, and now they are barren and trashed and spoiled. the image of "neon palm sway" is incredibly genius to me. very sad. and very powerful for an a cappella song! definitely one of my absolute favorites. it's very brave and very sweet (like leonard cohen's description of janis joplin in chelsea hotel no. 2).

i love it too!! i think it's her song that's most directly based on (the novel) lolita. it really tells a story well and the melody is so fresh. and the line "july to july" is genius!

I think it's a perfect choice. Such a good song. And it'd be pretty polemic.

ok first of all everyone please just be cautious with the gaga comparisons because lana is a completely different artist in so many ways. lana would never sing anything off of arptop because she doesn't play the role of postmodern pop star as gaga does. i love artpop and ultraviolence equally but they are completely different in terms of the story they tell.

second of all, the video to me was pretty pointless. the orange is obviously referring to a clockwork orange, but i don't see any depth or even any poetry in the video. this video does remind me of the video for the edge of glory, just because it's pointless (not because gaga and lana should be compared subjectively) but i just can not get anything intellectual out of this video.

yeah i get what you're saying. the three songs so far do have their own unique sounds, but i think they still have a similar sound overall. i like how it's guitar driven instead of hip-hop-beat driven like born to die was. i feel like this is the album she wanted to make before born to die, but born to die was her commercial release in a way. i don't know if that makes sense, but i'm excited to hear the whole album. i also think i will really appreciate how she described the album as a blend between east coast and west coast, because i've lived on both coasts, and i totally get how you can feel both of them in her new songs. angels forever and the paradise songs are examples of total west coast feel, but west coast (song) is a perfect hybrid of the two. i think west coast in the context of the album is also going to sound a lot better, and along with ultraviolence (song), it will help to tell the overall story of the album. i don't think her released songs are meant to be singles. i think they're meant to be heard in the context of an album. except for ride. and video games. and born to die. those three are just fine on their own. this has become a rant. i've had too much coffee and too little sleep so i'm ranting. now i'm ranting about ranting. sorry. i'm just excited for the album!

hmmm Methamphetamines probably takes the cake. Bad Disease, Living Without You, In Wendy, C U L8R Alligator a bit more like sad that she's that way, Elvis, Pawn Shop Blues, Yayo maybe, Get Drunk, Disco, Brite Lites sort of, Jump depending how you look at it

i think that a theme of the upcoming album could be the color spectrum. ultraviolet light, shades of colors- we see these concepts in black beauty. the color spectrum is a great theme and it goes so well with the black and white imagery.
