i really dislike this and superstar. it sucks because i was so excited for this new record but it's just not the Marina i used to love. still very hopeful for the other songs tho but not that excited anymore.

My Heart reminds me a little bit of Lana. The start has Flipside's vibe and the lyrics are very Lana

So apparently this version of the cover was found on the UMG official website... I assumed the "new cover" would only have slight editing done to it, but the whole cover has a green tint.

Spotify provided the needed closure for hearing all the songs on the album (it's going to be awhile before my CD arrives). I would really have liked to have been a fly on the wall when the interscope execs first heard HM. If they didn't like UV, they would've been horrified by HM. I mean UV was much more dynamic and varied -- along the dimensions pop and rock are expected to be. HM is also varied, but in more of an ambient, vocally-focused, soft jazz kind of way. The songs harken back to Billy Holliday Gloomy Sunday but with trap beats and relatively homogenized song tempos, which provides more of an abstract similarity to BTD's stylistic homogeneity (though I like HM's production better). The melodies in HM have a different feeling from UV and BTD (with the exception of Freak and MTWBT in parts), and it's going to take a while for song rankings to settle down. That said, I think it's a strong album from the point of view of artistic achievement, but no pop music badges will be earned. I'd be happy if it were nominated for a grammy in the pop vocal category, assuming the voting body wanted to increase diversity in what is considered pop, but more realistically it could be nominated for alternative. Hopefully, it sells well, as there's a lot of beautiful stuff on HM (but unfortunately a lot of beautiful albums don't sell well).
As far as DLMBM goes, the Animals (who wrote the song) have a version and so does Nina Simone. LDR's version seems more similar to the Animals. It seems to be there as an album closer to lighten the mood, which for mainstream pop, HM is pretty bleak at. The fact that the song follows Swan Song is interesting. Lana Del Rey, you never know™.

I'm not kidding, while the chorus of Music To Watch Boys To is already kind of in my head, it's almost entirely acapella in the chorus. Almost sounds like a re-recorded early demo like Methamphetamines in that it's so sparse. I can't believe how opposite it is to what many were expecting.

I had a bizarre theory about Honeymoon that I don't think anyone has brought up yet. Well, I feel as if Honeymoon has something to do with time. Honeymoon (the song) and Terrence Loves You use a lot of archaic vocabulary and phrases. For example, not many people use the phrase "neither fought nor found" but Lana does in the bridge of Honeymoon. Plus, she sings "never dare change thee" (which is simply an old word that was used to mean "you". Also note that my dictionary states that it should be "restricted to archaic or religious contexts", and obviously the song doesn't have a religious theme, so I feel like it's definitely supposed to be set in the past.) Lana's language in both Honeymoon and Terrence Loves You evoke a sense of formality that you don't usually hear in modern music. Also, from what has been described about Music To Watch Boys To (retro film noir) and God Knows I Tried (gospel song), it's quite possible to conclude the first portion of the album is set in the past, most likely in the Jazz Age in the 20's - seeing as both the songs at the start of the album have clear jazz influences. Gospel music also started to become quite popular just after the 20's, so it would make sense that it comes after the jazz-influenced songs.
As the album progresses, Lana has stated that it builds up to a lot of more mid-tempo and uptempo songs, which could symbolise the songs working towards a more present-day setting. High By The Beach sounds like it could be from the 60's. We then have Burnt Norton as an interlude, which, by the way, is a poem about time - how the past, present and future are all connected. This would make a lot of sense in relation to my theory of the album working with time. Lana also said in her interview with James Franco that the album then returns to its initial jazzy sound at the end, which probably means the songs slow down towards the end again (which could make sense considering there's a jazz cover to conclude). Also, 24 sounds like it could relate to this theme of time on the record.
Maybe the story is Lana looking into the future, "dreaming away" her life, and then around the interlude, she starts to return to reality.

Lana is unpredictable, but I believe that the HM release has to do something with the relationship between her and Interscope. I'm certain that we'll know much more about it after the release of HM because I suspect that things weren't fine between them after SNL despite what Interscope or Lana said in the press. I thought that HM will be a return to a more commercial sound and more involvement in the promotion of her music. But the signs that we have until now point in a different direction, that she will continue the artsy releases like Paradise and UV. Regarding promotion the strongest suggestion so far seems that she didn't let the press on her tour. Things were good and quiet and I think that she is just fed up with the press and she doesn't want more exposure. Using a new Instagram account (with just 150k followers) for promoting HM suggests that she wants to isolate the whole process of promoting HM, saying that HM will be an intimate album, artsy, with a non-pop sound and it's for people who love her sound and artistic persona. The dog avatar, from her main Instagram account, symbolizes for me that she's in defensive mode, she was deeply hurt and she will not accept the media bullying anymore, she wants to keep the haters out. Because of that I expect that she will be more cautious with her interviews and appearances and frankly I don't think that she will go on TV or at big bonanzas.
