Guest Dot Posted May 8, 2013 Alright so as far as I can see there is no such thing as song appreciation threads on this board so I decided to create one for one of my favourite Lana songs, Radio! Why do I love this song so much? Well...first it's nothing you'll ever hear anywhere else, it's different from anything else I've ever heard. It has that summery feel to it that makes you feel warm eventhough your listening to it when you walk home and it's snowing. It has such a great vibe and such a good message! It's like a huge FUCK YOU to all kind of criticism and judgement. My favourite lines: "Now my life is sweet like cinnamon" "Lick me up and take me like a vitamin" http://youtu.be/-U16iKiXGuY http://youtu.be/CFjqZpZZ5jI If you like this song as well, feel free share your thoughts and reply!
sonicalana 254 Posted May 8, 2013 When I listen to radio, I feel like I'm taking a swim in a pool of warm melted chocolate while birds of paradise fly all around me. Does that make sense?
MarryTheSequins 342 Posted May 8, 2013 Remains as one of my faves today, I also have the same fave lines

TrailerParkDarling 5,691 Posted May 8, 2013 I looove it. And it's not sung in her ~low~ voice like in BTD/VG (at least not on the album) The jazz cafe performance 0 Quote *** People call me crazy but I'm in demand ***
Chris Cuomo 3,320 Posted May 8, 2013 Radio is one of my faves off of btd. An iconic song Tbh and I really love the way she sings- not even they can stop me now in the beginning.

Leo 463 Posted May 8, 2013 Wasn't too impressed by Radio at first, for me it was one of the weaker songs on Born to Die. That was until I heard the amazing demo! Since then I can really appreciate the album version too, but imo the demo version is the "real" Radio and one of my (many) Lana favorites.
YouMakeMeWild 166 Posted May 8, 2013 Radio will always be one of my favourite Lana songs! I wish I could relate to these happier lyrics I still don't understand why everyone loves the demo version so much tbh.
YUNGATA 14,955 Posted May 8, 2013 HELLO YES I AM HERE WHAT IS UP? I AM DOWN FOR THIS THREAD. Radio. What a tune. I did a whole paragraph on it in a different thread not sure if I should repost though? I love the jazz cafe performance, but like sitar The Scala Club one has a special place in my heart so i'm gonna link that too I like how she sometimes goes a little high on the "i finally found you" when she sings it live, it's such a sweet little touch. Also something I've noticed is lyric changes through live performances. The BtD line is "baby love me cause i'm playing on the radio" but in live performances she tends to change it to "(my) baby loves me cause i'm playing on the radio." It's subtle but I think about it a lot. In the BtD version it kind of implies she's asking to be loved because she's finally famous, it's a little bit of a tease too. However the latter suggests she's only loved because of her fame which is a completely different emotion. I dunno why she does it or if there's any reason to it, but I find it interesting none the less. Let's talk about the demo though. (i'd link that too but the youtube version is pitched up horribly, what's a girl to do?) It has such a full sound to it and while i love the almost isolated sound her vocals have in the BtD version, the vocal layering all throughout this version are superb. This is like slow, sad electropop that i'd dance to in a club at 6am while the sun is about to rise and that just sounds sooo cooool. What I love about this demo generally is that in its most pure form it's a pop song, but for me at least, there's this real understated sadness to it, you know? Tbh I think this song would've done well on Paradise, thematically () at least. All these illusions to death, being reborn and paradise. in conclusions, i like sad things that I get to overanalyse.

ATTENTION SPOILERS!!! Well said, ataraxia! I really like the demo version, too and the way you described the feeling that you get from it is just how I feel about it as well. I'm not quite sure about how well it would've fit on Paradise, but I think this song would be a great song to close the Paradise Tour, along with National Anthem. Monicker 3,035 Posted May 9, 2013 I love Radio, especially the demo, which is the version i will talk about. That opening is like an explosion of Skittles shooting up into the sky--that silly fake harp, the digital finger snaps, that bass drum that drops, and the drone that sounds like you’re warping through a happy wormhole--and you just know that the next three and a half minutes are going to be blissful. I think the album version really dropped the ball by changing the way the songs starts. Anyway, this recording just has such a perfect feel, something that i think is hard to capture in songs, but once you have it, it’s like you can do no wrong with a song. It’s like if the song was half a BPM different or one instrument was mixed a tiny bit too loud or too low, it might all come crumbling down. But fret not, because it’s perfect. That chorus is pure gold. It’s so airy and light, that must be the music that plays when you’re skipping on clouds. The double tracked vocals are like an auditory candy bar. And the vocoder is amazing, let’s throw a fucking vocoder on here and have it panning back and forth, Lizzy, this song needs to be even more perfect. I love the little cheap sounding 8th note hi-hat rhythm throughout the song--it sounds like something a kid sitting in their bedroom would have playing from their battery powered Casio in 1991, trying to make a great song. And, finally, those counter melodies on the synth during the last chorus are like flying into the sunshine. But, like ataraxia mentioned, there is an underlying sadness that pokes through a little, and that is one of my favorite qualities in pop music. I still like the album version (which is built around the basic tracks of the demo) but you-know-who fiddled around with it too much and, i think, lost some of that feel from the demo. Still though, probably his least offensive reworking. R A D I O 9 Quote "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." -Wittgenstein
