Bethesda is the most overrated studio ever. Elder Scrolls is shit, Fallout 3 is shit, this is shit. Fallout New Vegas was astronomically better than anything this company ever produced and put them to shame. I liked Skyrim when i was like 13 but the horrific combat with a terrible magic system with the same 4 voice actors in the same identical caves and dungeons while forging 10 thousand iron daggers and leather braces to get the Daedric set gameplay did not age well….

Do NOT speak I'll of The Elder Scrolls. I spent my entire childhood playing Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

Also you speak as if games CANT have imperfections.

Now now let's not get too crazy. Bethesda games are a bug fests. But they have put out some iconic games for sure. The problem with modern Bethesda is that they've failed to adapt and innovate in this era of gaming.

Starfield being built on their old trash Creation Engine was their biggest mistake ever.

With time my perspective of Skyrim sours more and more. It’s like a mile wide, but a centimeter deep. I think the game is most appreciated when you just wonder off listening to the ambiance and the music and just read books you find, rather than play the actual game. It’s an experience for sure, but not one i find very well crafted or engaging with the way its designed.

Skyrim is the worse of the three. It was never finished and left as a bit of a sandbox for players to mod tbh. The dark brotherhood was supposed to be even longer than it was too.

I'd rank the three as:

Oblivion > Morrowind >>>>>> Skyrim

I've never fully played Daggerfall or Arena

My opinion for people who don't have time:

Spoiler

This is certainly a take. I agree with the Overrated, but not for the reasons you cite. Bethesda has definitely lost the status they were riding high as fuck on from 2011-2015 with Skyrim and Fallout 4, but I think that status in the first place came from internet culture, meme culture, and gaming culture, more than it did the actual games and gameplay.

My opinion for passionate people who do have time:

Spoiler

This IS certainly a take.

The Elder Scrolls series were pioneering in the space of open world games. Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim - they pushed the envelope in the space, but they are definitely not what I would consider to be "perfecters" of it. Something to consider is, at the time of those games' release, the technical limitations of PCs, consoles, how games were designed and delivered, what else was out there on the market - those need to be considered. This was a game that was in development in the last 2000s and was released in 2011, and building an extremely vast and huge game world is a large undertaking, and to be able to bring something to the table is going to require reuse of assets - be it maps, dialog, graphics. I don't think a lot of studios were really trying to do what Bethesda and Skyrim were doing, at that time, in terms of such a huge open world, and such a large amount of quests, and "what-if" scenarios within them. The entire Elder Scrolls series actually has a HUGE amount of lore in the game. The books, the NPCs, the side quests - sure a dungeon or cave pattern may be repetitious, but if you're someone who is really invested in a game with LORE, the Elder Scrolls series doesn't fall short in that department, at all.

The value you get now from Skyrim now is the fact that it's moddable (at least if you're on PC. If you're not....idk suffer). Same for Oblivion and Morrowind before it. The communities around these games have built absurd mods and quest packs, graphics overhauls, and put out tons of bug fixes and patches. I'd argue that the game holds up VERY well in this context, because a lot of the shortcomings are easily remedied with mods and graphics packs.

HOWEVER - I do agree with the Overrated bit, given the context here.

Part of the reason why Skyrim was so popular, is actually the same things you're citing as downfalls - the repetition and the NPCs and the bugs. I would honestly wager Skyrim's release back in 2011 was one of the first HUGE meme/culture impacts of a video game. The 'arrow to the knee'/'sweetroll' jokes were EVERYWHERE on the internet, because the lines were repeated at every turn in the damn game (life imitates art). The bugs and glitches made for absolutely stupid memes of kill shot cameras (Icicle spells going right into trolls' asses, anyone?) that were everywhere as well. The lore and story - every part of it became soaked in internet culture, in a time when Tumblr and Reddit and Twitter were REALLY getting their footing.

As a result, it built a realllllllly huge amount of positive image and goodwill in gaming and internet culture for Bethesda, and shot their image in the eyes of gamers and general "internet" people really, really, realllllllly sky high. It was less the actual game that cranked up their perceived value, in my opinion, and more of the culture surrounding the game, that did it.

(Skyrim also essentially blew the career of Lindsey Stirling sky high with that single video she did with the Skyrim theme, because male gaming troglodytes + tits + desperate attempt to appear 'cultured' for listening to classical/violin music instead of 'degenerate' pop/rap...but that's an entirely different dissertation)

And then........nothing happened with the franchise. Bethesda just did....nothing. Absolutely nothing. I will maintain to this day that their critical mistake was to divert and cater to their other franchises, rather than expand their team and lean into the MASSIVE success, both culturally and commercially, of Skyrim, and the momentum it gathered.

Just focusing on the TES franchise - Arena in 1994, 1996 for Daggerfall, then we hot-streaked with 2002 for Morrowind. 2006 Oblivion. 2011 Skyrim. And then.......nothing. Just plain fucking nothing. They licensed out Elder Scrolls to Zenimax for ESO Online (and that's doing well), but otherwise - dead franchise since then.

Skyrim has been re-released about as many times as a certain current female artist has released variants of a certain recent album since its release. Like. Come on.

We got a teaser announcement in 2018... 7 years after Skyrim, that TES 6 was in development. And it's been 6 years since then, a grand total of 13 years since Skyrim release....with no sequel. No follow up. No nothing. N O T H I N G.

They did Fallout 4 since then, which to be fair, did get them some positive points and reviews - it was well received and and a solid game, but like, flash in the pan culturally. Not the same impact at all in the gaming world culturally like Skyrim. No milestones and landmark moments were to be had imho.

Then we have....Starfield. A game that was delayed a lot, and one that got great reviews from the review shops....but also a game players seem to struggle with embracing. Bugs. The controversy around Mods and the Creation Club shit (PC gamers HATE when devs try to in-house the mod shop). Bethesda employees firing back and waging war at bad reviews on Steam, Twitter, etc. etc. The whole launch and release and reception and media around it - absolutely put a cloud over Bethesda, and is totally souring people's opinions on what Elder Scrolls 6 will look like.

They're remembering the "good ole days" of Skyrim's release and the nostalgia of the internet, and gaming, and what it was at that point in time, and looking at where we're at 13 years later and how the studio has behaved and what it's prioritized and how it's prioritized it and how it's execs and PR have conducted themselves after the Starfield release and it's just.....

Bethesda has definitely lost the status they were commanding with Skyrim and Fallout 4, FOR SURE, and I think they're a victim of their own successes, to a degree.

People have been wanting TES 6 to basically be Skyrim 2. They want "the next" arrow to the knee jokes. They want "the next" set of "Bethesda" bugs to laugh at. They want the culture and camaraderie and the memes around the game, I think, more than they want the actual game, and I think Bethesda knows this, and they know that Skyrim's successes were a product of the time and pop culture and internet culture and shit hitting at JUST the right moment for it and for them.

And now they have a nearly impossible task of delivering something to equal, if not top, all of that, and it just feels like they've stalled it out for as long as possible and now they're doing TES 6, finally, but it's been so many years I think that internet culture and gaming has moved on.

Anyway stream BRAT by Charli XCX.
