LYRICS :

My old man is a bad man

But I can't deny the way he holds my hand
And he grabs me, he has me by my heart
He doesn't mind I have a Las Vegas past
He doesn't mind I have a L.A. crass way about me
He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart

Swimming pool glimmering, darling
White bikini off with my red nail polish
Watch me in the swimming pool
Bright blue ripples
You sitting sipping on your black Cristal, yeah

Light of my life, fire in my loins
Be a good baby, do what I want
Light of my life, fire in my loins
Gimme them gold coins, gimme them coins

And I'm off to the races
Cases of Bacardi chasers
Chasin' me all over town
Cause he knows I'm wasted
Facing time again on Rikers Island
And I won't get out

Because I'm crazy, baby
I need you to come here and save me
I'm your little scarlet starlet
Singing in the garden
Kiss me on my open mouth
Ready for you

My old man is a tough man
But he got a soul as sweet as blood red jam
And he shows me, he knows me
Every inch of my tar black soul
He doesn't mind I have a flat broke down life
In fact he says he thinks it's what he might like about me
Admires me, the way I roll like a rolling stone

He likes to watch me in the glass room
Bathroom, Chateau Marmont
Slipping on my red dress, putting on my makeup
Glass room, perfume, cognac, lilac fumes
Says it feels like heaven to him

Light of his life, fire of his loins
Keep me forever, tell me you own me
Light of your life, fire of your loins
Tell me you want me, gimme them coins

And I'm off to the races
Cases of Bacardi chasers
Chasin' me all over town
Cause he knows I'm wasted
Facing time again on Rikers Island
And I won't get out

Because I'm crazy, baby
I need you to come here and save me
I'm your little scarlet starlet
Singing in the garden
Kiss me on my open mouth

Yo, I'm off to the races, laces
Leather on my waist is tight
And I am falling down
I can see your face is shameless
Cipriani's Basement
Love you but I'm going down

God, I'm so crazy, baby
I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving
I'm your little harlot, starlet
Queen of Coney Island
Raising hell all over town
Sorry 'bout it!

My old man is a thief
And I'm gonna stay and pray with him 'till the end
But I trust in the decision of the Lord to watch over us
Take him when he may, if he may
I'm not afraid to say that I'd die without him
Who else is gonna put up with me this way?
I need you, I breathe you, I'd never leave you
They would rue the day I was alone without you

You're lying with your gold chain on
Cigar hanging from your lips
I said, "Hon, you never looked so beautiful
As you do now, my man."

And we're off to the race, places
Ready, set the gate is down
And now we're going in
To Las Vegas, chaos
Casino Oasis
Honey, it is time to spin

Boy you're so crazy baby
I love you forever, not maybe
You are my one true love

You are my one true love

This is one of my fav songs off of btd. I can't really choose what's my sole favorite but I love this song so much. I have idea on what this song is actually about and a lot of people say its about her/her man going to jail but for some reason I kind of think its about an infatuation with the man who made her crazy. Its the way she sings and the deep vibe of the song that reminds me of a girl who says I know he's bad and I know I'm crazy but he made me this way and I love him I can't live without him.

or maybe that's just me

god knows I tried

I think the song name should be in the title so these can be easily navigable :slayty:

Before I go too in depth on the song, I love this interview, which may be the only one in which she actually mentions the song: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=3224525245356

A must-watch for Lanalyzers.

Yay my favorite Lana song!  :crying:

Overall rating: ★★★★

First impression: This was the first Lana song I ever heard and I thought it was a fucking brilliant masterpiece. It my second favorite song of all time, ever in existence. It's pretty much responsible for my Lana addiction.

Impression now: It still slays me every single time I hear it and I love it so much. I want to marry this song.

iTunes plays: 112, my most played

Songs I play along with it: All of the upbeat Born to Die tracks, but honestly it's just perfect by itself

What I like about it: Everything, the list could go on forever. I think the lyricism and imagery is remarkable and I am seriously transported to another place when this song comes on. Some of the rhymes are just just untoppable in my opinion. I think it is unbelievable sexy in the most Lana Del Rey-way. I love the contrast between the depth of her voice the half talking/half singing verses and the higher-pitched tone during the chorus. I adore the Lolita references. I like how it's this energy filled high-speed night on the town story and a love story all in one. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG.

What I dislike about it: Nothing, it's a masterpiece.

Memories I associate with this song: The most glorious moment of my existence -- when I discovered Lana Del Rey. I was sitting in my mom's bathroom straightening my hair and this came on my Lykke Li Pandora station and my jaw hit the floor I was so impressed.

Colors/images that come to mind: As far as colors, I see a lot of dark blue and red/orange. In the heart of the song, the chorus, all I can see is the Sphinx statue in Las Vegas. I'm not sure, but it's just always there in my mind.

Favorite lyrics: Can I say all of them? Because seriously. I think my overall favorite line might be "you're lying with your gold chain on, cigar hanging from your lips, I said hon" part because of the way it's in sync with the beat and the sultriness of her voice is just a CLIMAX MOMENT for me. But I think some of the high-points in the song are the "Says it feels like heaven to him" bit as well as the whole "Yo, I'm off to the races, laces, leather on my waist is tight and I am falling down" verse.

Interpretation: I think it's all pretty self-explanatory. It's a song about being unconditionally in love with someone who is a bad, despite of the crimes they commit. It also has strong themes of the glamorous side of fame, beauty, and money. I don't think there's a much deeper meaning to this song but God, it's brilliant.

I think this song would do really well with the public and it's a shame more people don't know about it. I think it would help Lana out of the "boring" category the general public puts her under. This is song is anything but boring! It genuinely is, in my opinion, Lana's best song (at least lyrically). I love this song  :crying2:

Edit: I'll actually contribute :slayty: ..

Overall rating: 10/10, would bang.

First impression: Well, I used to hate this song along with Million Dollar Man and Carmen, but MDM and OTTR are among my favourites off the album now (I couldn't pick one; they're all my favourites except Carmen, which I still dislike).

Impression now: Still love it. Obviously the wow factor has worn off, but I love it nonetheless.

iTunes plays: Well, just ripped all my albums in lossless literally a few days ago, so not many plays, I'm sure.

Songs I play along with it: Eh, I don't mess around with it in playlists that often. I like Born To Die to precede it and then have Blue Jeans follow it. :slayty:

What I like about it: As others have mentioned, the development of the lyrics and also how the song is constructed. Just the overall genius of it.

What I dislike about it: Nothing.

Memories I associate with this song: Driving in the car, playing it, and falling in love with it and Million Dollar Man.

Colors/images that come to mind: The colours on the single cover i.e. green and gold but also orange or red.

Favorite lyrics: SAYZE IT FEELS LIKE HEAVEN TO HIM

Interpretation: She's a wild bitch wit her crazy boyfriend :hottie:

First impression: fucking amazing (seriously- it really stood out to me when i first listened to BTD. i remember that day :flutter: )

Impression now: still amazing

iTunes plays: 74 (second top played song)

Songs I play along with it: idk what this means lol i guess the BTD album? i dont really associate it with any other songs

What I like about it: The lyrics, the way she "raps" sorta, the chorus!! idk i just love how different her voice sounds in the verses vs chorus

What I dislike about it: not much

Memories I associate with this song: well like i said above i still remember the first time i listened to BTD so. that would be summer of 2012

Colors/images that come to mind: the colour red, a race track, las vegas

Favorite lyrics:

He doesn't mind I have a Las Vegas past
He doesn't mind I have a L.A. crass way about me
He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart

Overall rating: 4.5/5

First impression: I thought it was the best song on the album and was hoping she'd make a video for it.. actually, I was convinced she would. I remember waiting for her early performances to come up on youtube so I could watch.  When she'd sing it live she'd change the lyrics from time to time i.e. Sipping on your Dom Perignon, oh fuck yes! I think she was still performing You Can Be The Boss around this time, too. Sigh..

Impression now: I still love this song. I think- just based on viewing the video Lana made again- that Gods and Monsters was a continuation of the story told in OTTR. I notice that in the OTTR video, if I'm not incorrect, all of the women featured are Latina, which is interesting. I still wish she'd sing it live. It's so different from most of her set- I get that it's very difficult to sing b/c it's kind of all over the place but it's so interesting to hear. Whatever Gods and Monsters was trying to do, OTTR already did 10x better.

iTunes plays: I never use Itunes

Songs I play along with it: Radio & Diet Mt Dew (Album version)

What I like about it: Upbeat, fun to drive to, theatrical, various intonations used throughout the song. I understand why everyone lusts after a demo version because so much has been done to the song, as far as production is concerned

What I dislike about it: The fact that Lana doesn't perform it anymore.. that it wasn't capitalized on for radio play

Memories I associate with this song: Early performances, certain outfits she wore while performing this song, I remember this being played on promo for 90210 or Gossip Girl.. one of those shows and being excited

Colors/images that come to mind: The color green. I see Lana the way she looked in the National Anthem homemade video and imagine her up in her "bell tower hotel" and sitting by the pool while her boyfriend gambles/ raises hell all over town. It always made me think of a woman avenging her boyfriend's death

Favorite lyrics: "You are my one true love", "God, I'm so crazy, baby, I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving." "Raising hell all over town, Sorry 'bout it!" I like when she says "yo" and the "flat broke down life" too. But my favorite is probably "Who else is gonna put up with me this way?" I swear I've taken so many phrases from this song to use irl lmao

Interpretation: Ride or die lifestyle, stand by your man, etc

First impression: absolutely flawless

Impression now: hasn't changed, if anything i like it more

iTunes plays: i'm not even gonna check because i know it's extremely low idk why but i always listen on my phone

Songs I play along with it: does this mean like what songs i think of? i always associate this with blue jeans

What I like about it: everything i love the lyrics, the beat. you can feel her emotions and it's just perfect i love everything about it

What I dislike about it: literally nothing

Memories I associate with this song: the first time i heard it. i had just started getting into lana and someone had said something about it and i hadn't heard it so i went on youtube and listened and fell in love

Colors/images that come to mind: during the chorus i think of reds and during the "because i'm crazy" verses i think of deep blues and purples. it depends on which part of the song. during some parts i picture the actual scene happening.

Favorite lyrics: don't make me choose

Interpretation: she's in love with a criminal but she can't help it. it's not even a conflict, she wouldn't change it for anything. she's ok with him being the way he is. she even feels it goes both ways -- that she's a mess too but he'll still love her unconditionally. she feels like as long as they have each other they can do anything

i love this song sooo much i think it's my favorite on btd but i suck at choosing favorites. this song is flawless and definitely some of her best work

Overall rating: ★★★★★

First impression: Hands down the best song on the album. I remember listening through the entire album the day 'Born to Die' got released and this song just stood out. My first favorite song by her!

Impression now: Flawless.

iTunes plays: Because I'm always deleting/importing/replacing Lana songs to keep up with the absolute freshest material this is so irrelevant in my case. But right now it's 31.

Songs I play along with it: I really like to play this fanmade instrumental version of this song. Doesn't matter which one I play first, but if I play the original before listening to the instrumental version I just end up having a karaoke festival wherever I am because the song gets so beautiful when I hear the backing track tunes only and I'm like :hair:

What I like about it: It's so out of her normal element~

What I dislike about it: I wish she would've tried doing songs like these a lot more.

Memories I associate with this song: January 2012: Riding back and forth to school with this in my earphones. Lip syncing every lyric.

Colors/images that come to mind: Las Vegas. Flames. String orchestra. Purple. K. Stripper Pole. Scarlet(t)  :scajo2:

Favorite lyrics: This song has a recurring lyric theme as I like to call it. Let's analyze:

I really love this lyric transition in the song:

And I'm off to the races, cases of Bacardi chasers

Chasing me all over town [...]

And we're off to the races, places
Ready, set the gate is down and now we're goin' in

She does this on "National Anthem" as well:

He says to "be cool" but

I don't know how yet [...]

He said to "be cool" but
I'm already coolest

Interpretation: [Plays "02 Off to the Races.mp3" and writes down whatever I'm thinking throughout the song]
Her ol' man doesn't mind her past. He loves her. (Has this "Put Me In a Movie" feeling to it in a daddy kinda way now that I think about it). He takes care of her. She feels safe with him. He admire her flaws and accepts her for who she is. Lizzy <3 K <3 Coney Island. K is a thief (and she's gonna stay and pray with him 'til the end~ (as in his death sentence? oh my god major epiphany)). But she trusts him, the decision of the lord to watch over him. (Note: "Dear lord when I get to heaven / Please let me bring my man" from "Young and Beautiful"... So not only does she wanna bring Barrie with her. She also has K waiting for her in heaven. Awks.)  :stareney2:

I like Off to the Races a lot, it's one of my favourite songs on Born to Die, I think it's one of the best examples of Lana's "gangsta Nancy Sinatra/lolita lost in the hood" image. She's talking about crime and drugs in a very luxurious setting but in a gangster way. Like, her guy is drinking Cristal, wearing a gold chain and she mentions Vegas a few times. I like that she's not an innocent little girl being taken advantage of by a criminal but she has a bad past as well.

I don't really like her using the "Light of my life, fire in my loins" line in this, just like I don't like her using "heavier than heavenly" in On Our Way, it just sounds like she's using phrases she read somewhere that she thought sounded nice and wanted to use herself, it kind of loses its meaning to me.

The lyrics sounds fictional to me, like she wanted to write a story of how she wanted her life to be like, being in love with a gangster, being a beautiful badass, committing crimes while living at he Chateau Marmont. Maybe she was in a relationship with a small time criminal (like a drug dealer maybe) but I don't think it was nearly as bad as she says in the song.

My favourite lines are "Swimming pool glimmering, darling / White bikini off with my red nail polish / Watch me in the swimming pool / Bright blue ripples / You sitting sipping on your black Cristal, yeah" because I love the imagery and I like how consistent she is with certain phrases like "glimmering by the swimming pool" among others.

I also love "I love you forever, not maybe / You are my one true love / You are my one true love" because Lana's way of completely devoting herself to one man is something I like a lot about her. When she falls in love, she falls hard and she devotes all of her love to that person and she'd die for them and I don't see that too often (which is why Your Band Is All the Rage is one of my favourite songs by her, it talks about that exact thing). A lot of singers may write about hopelessly falling in love with one person and wanting to die for them and stuff like that because it sounds beautiful and makes them sound romantic but then they break up over the littlest thing (I think you know who I'm talking about....) but Lana's a ride or die, whether you fail or fly~

Caesar said he’d fall in love with me if I was older. I own all of Mexico and I got my own roller-coaster.

-What I dislike about it: actually nothing

-Memories I associate with this song: not memories, but lot of visions and situations i'd like to experience

Overall rating: 5/5

First impression: loved how visual she was with the lyrics & how it was very different to the songs out at the time [or at least v diff from the music I was listening to at the time]. Also I was hugely impressed by how grand the production sounded-- always made me wanna drink champagne while I dramatically morned with Lana over the loss of her lover.

Impression now: I feel the same about it but I have held off on playing it as much. It's nice when I put my ipod on shuffle in the car and OTTR suddenly starts playing every so often. gem!

iTunes plays: idk

Songs I play along with it:  Afraid, C U L8R Alligator, I Don't Wanna Go, Serial Killer, Last Girl on Earth    --- just bc it follows along w the story scene I've made up--- does anyone else ever do that?? My playlists always have to follow along with the storyline that plays in my head.

What I dislike about it:  it needs a proper music video either with over the top production like she's been doing now or ~a la Lizzy/ homemade with fun clips of LDR [that's one of the main things I craved when watching the original video, imagine how killer that's be?!!].

Memories I associate with this song: Watching her live performance at the Ruby Lounge [on youtube]. The weird deep voice she puts on in the beginning of that performance along with the odd pauses had me cringing but then LDR redeems herself at the bridge of the song. Gotta admit that I did not give her enough credit at first for how hard that song must be to perform live. I still wish she'd give it another try one of these days just to make everybody go wild!

Colors/images that come to mind:  Red + Green + Orange; Lana reenacting Lolita 1997 scenes , exagerated display of wealth...huge mansion + cars+ect, scenes of FBI spying on the couple, Lana racing through the streets, her lover stealing/commiting murder/ selling drugs while Lana is at home relaxing ~poolside~, Lana snorting cocaine, argument in LDR and her lover's bedroom similiar to the one in the movie Goodfellas, FBI arresting her lover, Lana trying to help her lover escape prison....ect ect

Favorite lyrics:
"And he shows me, he knows me
Every inch of my tar black soul
"

"Glass room, perfume, cognac, lilac fumes
Says it feels like heaven to him"

"I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving
I'm your little harlot, starlet
Queen of Coney Island
Raising hell all over town
Sorry 'bout it!
"
                                  LOVE: The slight change with the word "harlot" made me go insane after my very first listen because of how it intensifies the tone of the entire song.

Interpretation: Lana is aware of her lover's dangerous occupation of murder+drugs+theft but is distracted by the opulent lifestyle. At first she doesn't mind being his trophy wife since she feels inferior to him early on in the relationship considering her ~Los Vegas past/ LA crass/flat broke down life~  not fitting in with the cookie cutter ways of the rich but she is won over by how he seems so accepting despite of all that. She's in a very submissive relationship only until Lana slowly starts learning how to dominate him sexually and get him to do all these things by simply teasing; Watch me in the swimming pool Bright blue ripples, you sitting sipping on your black Cristal...he likes to watch me in the glassroom bathroom

Overcome by the sense of power, Lana uses her newfound advantage to momentarily distract her lover after she gets heavily involved with the drugs he's been dealing. Since she's new with this whole ordeal, her naive ways cause her to draw FBI attention toward her lover. The lover, being the pro that he is, quickly notices that he's being watched and mentions it to Lana only for her to confess how she's been fuckin around w/ his business.. I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving. The furious lover tries to think of a plan to get them out of this mess but it is much too late and the fault is focused only on him. Racing all over town
The following morning after the FBI has arrested her lover, the exclusive neighborhood is congested with reporters inquiring about the arrest + huge drug crackdown. Lana, being the ride-or-die woman that she is, boldly declares in the middle of the loud reporters+ flashing camera lights:

I'm gonna stay and pray with him 'till the end
But I trust in the decision of the Lord to watch over us
Take him when he may, if he may
I'm not afraid to say that I'd die without him

Lana maintains the appearance of the loyal, innocent wife in the eye of the media while at night she dangerously reaches out to her lover's friends to help her plan a way to sneak him out of prison. The 'friends' deny and threaten her life, leaving Lana to take matters into her own hands.  Louis vuitton purse (loaded up with a couple of tightly wrapped 100 dollar bills + diamonds, obv) in one hand, gun in the other-- a fired up Lana races on a mission to rescue her one true love! Flashbacks from love-filled casino nights replay in Lana's head while she contemplates over all that is at risk if she's unsuccessful. This realization only intensifies Lana's determination!

Ready, set the gate is down
And now we're going in
To Las Vegas, chaos
Casino Oasis
Honey, it is time to spin
  ~~~~ !!!!
lol, the storyline changes depending on how I'm feeling [like sometimes Lana is the ~criminal~ and purposely frames her much, MUCH older lover. All the references to how much she loves the guy in this particular case are markered with sinister sarcasm as she is already choosing her next victim. ^_^
It's never 2 late 2 be the things that u might've been* i'll sing till u fall asleep- u try and remember when*the future looked lush and sweet
Reductive bHP5WIb.gif
How about creating a subforum in "Lana Thoughts"? There are approximately over +200 songs (not including songs yet to be announced and released, oh dear lord), and that alone is like 4 years of discussing one song every week. I think it's safe to say that it's gonna stick around for a while. On one hand it seems rather practical to keep it all within the same thread, but it feels like it's gonna end up becoming a nightmare if you wanna read something specific about a particular song. Don't forget to tag each thread title with the name in case it happens! Just a suggestion   :hae:
Now go create that sub-forum to make up for it 3caHdBf.gif
First impression: Something about Lana's persona just rubbed me the wrong way when I first discovered her, so I actually wanted to dislike it, but of course I couldn't. The beat is one of the finest things on BTD and Lana's sing flow and lyrics are too cool to dislike.
Impression now: Feel the same way about it.
Songs I play along with it:  Sometimes You Can Be The Boss, TIWMUG and Mermaid Motel.
What I like about it: Errthing
What I dislike about it: Maybe that I overplayed it to some degree, but laying if off a minute helps.
Memories I associate with this song: Even before I realized that she was quoting Lolita, I somehow connected it to the 97' Lolita movie. Same feeling they invoke I guess.
Colors/images that come to mind: The colour scheme from her homemade video, Lolita, sunshine (?)
Favorite lyrics: "He grabs me, he has me by my heart// He doesn't mind I have a Las Vegas past/ He doesn't mind I have a L.A. crass way about me, he loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart/
Before I go too in depth on the song, I love this interview, which may be the only one in which she actually mentions the song: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=3224525245356
We need more interviews with questions like that tbh.
I wonder what would she say about SS...
