Not Chloe saying love on the nazi outfit 😭

Charli looks amazing though but I’m getting big pink Floyd vibes

Okay glad I'm not the only one who had that thought in the back of their head on that promo photo. (Currently sensitized to the topic due to other drama happening on Twitter unrelated to pop-dom)

That being said, the shoot is a (nervous) serve.

So this debate is actually going on rn on kink twitter b/c some prominent porn people got outed for doing literal N*zi fetish play (symbols and armbands and all), but I digress....

It's hard, because 1940s Germany didn't and doesn't have a historical monopoly on trench coats, leather, or muir caps, but then you have photos like this, and the iconography and association is very hard to ignore - they definitely tainted it. It's doubly difficult because a lot of fashion brands and designers have their roots in and around that time period (Hugo Boss literally did design the outfits, Coco Chanel was a sympathizer....), so when those brands put out shit that calls back to anything around that era, it's....icky.

JW Anderson is a UK brand though, headed by an Irishman, and prior to starting the brand he worked for Loewe (Spanish house) - so it's not like it's a look coming from a person or place with direct historical ties to the era that I can see. Leather and muircaps are also associated with a lot of fetish stylings (Tom of Finland stands out), which came from reclamation and subversion of the aforementioned and was done by folks in an attempt to take the iconography and stylings of oppressors and make it their own. Those bits sort of pull me out and away a bit from criticizing that look harshly as squarely penning it as *that*.

I get what you mean entirely- I think If they were going to do leather men tribute though- there were probably better photos or ideas to showcase it

He is, and like I mentioned in my comment it kinda just goes full circle because ToF sourced his stylings in a subversive nature from police and military garb. I did do a little looking around after my post earlier though and I have a question mark on JW for a sweater from his collection that's a rather distinct shade of brown, with a police/military man printed right on it. It's....a choice, for sure. In the grand scheme of things I'd rather err on the side of cautious appreciation. I'm not calling for cancelling anyone, but at the same time, fashion has a history of flying too close to the sun, and I think it bears merit to point it out sometimes.

It's def not a LB conversation, but it's a whole debacle involving some prominent people in that community, and it's spurred conversations on what sort of attire and stylings are acceptable in the vein of fetishwear/Tom of Finland style, and where the line is on when it crosses over into 'dangerous resemblance' territory. It's why I personally looked at the JW campaign and had an eyebrow raise up, since it's in my current sphere of scrutiny.

That being said, fashion constantly recycles and redefines and repurposes silhouettes, shapes, materials, stylings - the meanings and history behind them often get mulched a bit whenever new subcultures and age groups pick it up.
