I was thinking about this earlier today when I was reading/watching older interviews from 2011/2012

It really seemed like she was trying to project herself with a more exaggerated image back then. Like with the way she spoke (bold New York accent in some interviews) and her mannerisms. I can see why people thought she was unauthentic and manufactured because of how awkward she came off while trying to adjust to the image people thought of when they heard and saw 'Lana Del Rey.' But I don't get the people who use her old music as validation of her being fake. She's just refined her craft and evolved as a songwriter, just like any other artist. I mean so many tracks from Born to Die reference some of her older tracks. It's not like she started writing about something completely different. Anyways, I'm glad I became a fan post-Ultraviolence because she comes off to me as confident/matured and organic compared to 2012. I feel like she's just being herself these days in interviews, on social media and whatnot. Nowadays, 'Lana Del Rey' doesn't seem like much of a persona to me it's simply a stage name used by the woman we know and love named Lizzy Grant.

To me, it seems like Lana Del Rey is Elizabeth Grant's art, come to life.

I love that film. It's one of my favorites from Allen.

With me, I was influenced by Jean-Luc Godard's use of the fourth wall in Vivre Sa Vie. In one pinnacle scene, he has Anna Karina stare directly into the camera as a way to punctuate that she's aware she's heading in a troubling direction, and there's no way anybody's going to stop her. I picked up on that, that thin line between feeling safe watching a film and then when the characters themselves draw the viewer into the mess without any way of helping. I usually apply such a thing with every project I tackle - because I want nothing more than for the audience to have to partake in the story in some way. Whether in that way, or viscerally (like when a character is bored or doing a mundane thing; the viewer must feel bored and mundane along with them).

That one was definitely just a fun exercise. The only short film I made in that year, actually. But I intended that it be a kind of metaphor on how people are watched on film. The audience is always playing voyeur, watching things from a safe space - but I liked the idea of questioning, what if the protagonist becomes aware that he's being watched? Taunted? I kind of liked the idea of a bloody gift being laid at the front door. Almost anticlimactic, and not too original, but a fitting finale for the character's paranoia he's been experiencing.

It's not one of my favorites, personally, but that's pretty much the way my head was working when I made it. But then, characters becoming aware or being aware they're "in a film" is something I've always been interested in. Many of my projects have fourth wall breaks to show that. Whether or not that works for the viewer? I don't know! Haha.

I suggest either Warwick or The Trash if you're feeling ballsy for a feature. Or, pretty much anything from 2016. So, Blue Guitar, too. Haha.

Before that, they were mostly just exercises in searching for a style and a way of telling stories I think of.

    My absolute favorite Lana song.

I like to think she's saying bonny - because she mentions it elsewhere on the album (in "Shades of Cool", if I recall). I do, however, thank it can be taken double - as with most of her lyrics - as a reference to Bonnie and Clyde. It fits with the theme and enriches it. Layers, references. All typical of Lana.

As I said in another thread, I love the David Lynch references. I refuse to accept "fire and he walks with it" isn't a reference to Twin Peaks until otherwise proven. It just seems so fitting with the trumpet in the background - which recalls Mulholland Drive and the scene in the Club Silencio.

Personally I get a lot of imagery from this song. From the start, I envision a very miserable jazz club surrounded by blue flames, with Lana just standing on the stage with mascara running down her face. When the chorus kicks in with "he's got the fiiiiire", I see those flames grow in intensity and turn bright red and orange.

The chorus after the bridge, where the production fades out, genuinely moves me beyond words. I can't describe it. Something about it hits me hard. It seems so raw, so vulnerable, and so lost. So very, very sad - which is fitting to the premise of the song and the overall aesthetic of her work - especially on Ultraviolence.

This is easily one of my favorite songs ever. Certainly one of the most powerful every time I listen to it.

I think more than anything, the video for "Freak" validates this entire interpretation.

I know this could all be bullshit, but I find it weird that a random troll would find humor out of this. What is there to gain? Plus, it seems coincidental mentioning an album coming before the end of the year.

Still sitting on the skeptical side, but a lot of this is truly bizarre; especially considering the consistency across the board with these rumors.

Don't get too excited. Although, this is, like, the fourth time its been rumored that Criterion is working on a release with her videos. It's still up in the air if it's valid, or not. Nothing from the actual Criterion team has been said. Still odd that so many anonymous posters on BluRay.com, Criterion, CriterionForum, etc. are insisting they know it's happening, though.

If it does, great. If not, boo.

What I find most interesting about this particular post is the "album being released in 2016" thing.

    what a fascinating thread

Flipside - delusion almost, her lover leaves and she thinks he's gonna gravitate back to her as per usual
The Blackest Day - she begins lamenting over the loss of her lover, consciously realizing he's gone
Hawaiian Tropic - acceptance, she's much more free given that her lover has left her and all of the bars from her relationship have been lifted
