She should also be in movies physically.

Y'all bitches are never satisfied. It sounds like another gorgeous, iconic soundtrack song to me. It's not supposed to be radically different in style or in lyrical content because it's for a film project, not her new album.

I think it's beautiful. Does anyone else notice how well Lana's newer projects are staying under wraps recently? She must have her shit on lock these days, after pretty much everything else ever had leaked.

Yeah she's so protective of Frances Bean she goes around insulting her mother Courtney in the same book she slanders Lana. Nice try at back pedalling Kim and trying to find an excuse to get out of the mess you created

I thought about this song today and came up with my interpretation.
I think this song describes Lana's relationship with things outside of herself which cause distress in her life (mainly the media/her record label) and lets us know how her experiences make her feel.

Why you make me work so hard
To put on that evening show

Here Lana talks about the problems she faces in her career as a musician. She loves to make music and she does tours, but promoting the songs is a drag for her, she is shy and a private person, doesn't really like to be the center of cynical, hurtful attention. She perceives many people to be this way. She does not enjoy some aspects of her career, yet she still has to do it.

When you know that all I want
Is to make your money grow?

She is addressing her "money hungry" label who always want to change her and push her to be more commercial, they are dissatisfied with her product. The label benefits from having her and she would be willing to work with them if only she was supported in what she wants to do.

You're like a baby who don't got nowhere to go
I feel you eyeing me, you keep it on the low
(on the low, on the low)

They act childish towards her - she has a contract, they don't let her go, but they don't want her in the way that she is available to them. They want to change her constantly.

But I can't let you in
And I can't keep you out
I wait for life to mend
    But it never comes around
And I can't hear you call
And I can't hear me [shout?]
I wait for it to break
    But it never comes around

The chorus addresses the media scrutinizing her and exposing too much about her life, her past, her family. She doesn't want people to dig around in her past yet she is helpless against them, she can't stop people from doing it. She waits for life to mend, to get better, for better things to come but they never seem to arrive. She wants to have a break where she can be more at peace but she only yearns for peace, it is not her actual experience.

    And I'm lonely
    I'm lonely
    I'm lonely

These events make her feel lonely, being watched by the eye of so many people who misunderstand or judge her. Sometimes you feel the most alone in a crowd. That is how she is. She doesn't find someone who she can trust or someone who relates to her, even though it is imporant her to have a person who she can hold on to.

Why you make me take that shit
To put on that evening show
When you know I don't need it
Better than your booze and blow?

Again she laments that with her profession as a musician she has to do many things that she doesn't enjoy. Making music is her favorite part but there is a lot more to it than that.
In the two final lines, she says she doesn't need all the mainstream success that some would like her to have, it is not a priority for her. She likens those achievements to booze and blow, they put you high but they are also hurtful, they bring even more attention to you and she already had enough of that. She is worried that more attention would cause more problems.

    (Scatting)
    Feel like I'm falling apart
    (Scatting)
    Feel like I'm falling apart
    (Scatting)
    Feel like I'm falling apart

Because of the bad experiences, her stability is broken, she is falling apart, she doesn't know how to react what to say, and often gets into uncomfortable situations which give her even more bad reputation. (like the I want to die story) She feels destroyed but she is helpless and can't do much against it.

    Would you tell me?
    Would you tell me?
    Would you tell me?

But I can't let you in
And I can't keep you out
I wait for life to [win/mend/end?]
    But it never comes around
And I can't hear you call
And I can't hear me [shout?]
I wait for it to break
    But it never comes around

    And I'm lonely
    I'm lonely
    I'm lonely

She is alone - misunderstood, and helpless. Truly a sad song describing the abandonmnet she feels in her position from which she can't really escape.

I think Lana has definitely become disenchanted with fame after seeing its dark side, but you'd have to be fooling yourself to think she didn't initially want it. Homegirl was obsessed with pop culture and celebria before making it big.

Let's not kid ourselves. It's coming in January 2016 at the earliest.

I'm sort of hoping for The Endless Summer to be the title. Billie Holiday meets Jeff Buckley and produced by Mark Ronson with a couple of tracks by David Lynch. I would orgasm on the spot tbh

I agree with this. From the first time I heard UV I felt it was about going clean after being a user. Pretty much all the lyrics support the theory. Going clean can be a hard process (violent), but when she was using it felt like true love because she was drunk/high ("Jim raised me up, he hurt me but it felt like true love"). But it was ultimately bad for her, ("Jim taught me that loving him was never enough"). I could go further but I don't want to scare everyone off being a new member lol. I will say that I think the spoken portion towards the end, ("We could go back to New York", etc) could be read as her fantasizing about leaving fame behind and going back into anonymity (as much as she possibly could anyway), to start using again. Not that she would, of course, but I'm sure given how rocky fame has been for her the idea has crossed her mind.

Alice BrightSky finally released her album Box of Me several years in the making and including the song "Lover's Fate" on which Lizzy Grant sang background vocals and I posted about back in December. Alice was a fellow musician in the Williamsburg music scene with Lizzy and won third place in the WLSC 2006 in which Lizzy competed. You can listen to previews of her album and buy it here on CD Baby.

In my sleuthing, I've listened to music by a number of artists I wanted to contact. I do this for a couple reasons. It seems rude, somehow, to contact an artist and only ask them about another artist's work. I like to have something positive and genuine to say about their own work. And as Mae West said, "Flattery will get you everywhere." Often I'll only listen until I find something nice to say. That didn't take long with Alice, but I kept listening anyway because I love all her songs, especially "Pry Me Away", "I Am", "Up Up and Away", "Tie and Untie", and of course, "Lover's Fate". I really like her songwriting and voice. Her music has sort of a 90s girl-with-a-guitar Lilith fair folk rock feel to me, and I mean that in a good way. She reminds me a bit of Ani DiFranco, except I like Alice better. She was super nice and friendly when I contacted her and really helpful with Early Shows questions, so I hope some of you will show the forum's appreciation by buying her album and get to hear some good music as well.

Ha. "People". That is impressive vagueness. But I don't really care. I'm just glad she's finally acknowledging it. But this makes me suspect Brian Hiatt's been reading our forum even more. "Shaving off". I've used that phrase to describe this at least once.

I think she's probably conflating a couple things here. Both Gaga and Lana played consecutive new writer showcases at the Cutting Room put on by the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (SHOF) which Bob Leone worked for as Projects Director. The Monday night lineups she's referring to were probably Monday night open mics at Makor that were also put on by the SHOF. You can see more about those gigs in the "Early Shows" section.

    Regarding Axl Rose:

Wow. It's truly fascinating that one of the most subtly written portrayals of a problematic relationship in modern pop music may be accidental, the writer not self-conscious of it.

    Paging @@FormerLanaFan.

I would love a Buzzfeed-style "Cunt-ries of the World" map of what Barrie imagines each nation's delicacies taste like.

She sheds more light on her relationship with a record label exec:
It's almost like she wants us to figure it out.

Who knew dry-humping jokes were the way to a woman's heart? (Skip to 3:46.)

Yo, Franco, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish... but Barrie-James was one of the best boyfriends of all time. One of the best of all time!
