I love this song so much. Has some emotions Lana doesn't really show much in most of her songs. Sounds tender, honest like really from the heart. Look how cheesy my description is...hahaha...but is what I feel when I hear it

Well, I didn't know it would come to this
But that's what happens when you're on your own
And you're alright letting nice things go
Well, I pawned the earrings that you gave me
Gold and metal flowers dangling
And I almost cried as I sold them, oh
And I don't mind living on bread and oranges, no no
But I gotta get to and from where i come
And it's gonna take money to go
Oh, no...
In the name of higher consciousness
I let the best man I knew go
'Cause it's nice to love and be loved
But it's better to know all you can know
I said it's nice to love and be loved
But I'd rather know what God knows
Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no
I can't do this once more
No man can keep me together
Been broken since i was born
Well, I didn't know it would come to this
But that's what happens when you're on your own
And you're alright letting nice things go

Now that some scoundrel has leaked the live "Boarding School" video ( ), I think it's worth taking another look at what we think the lyrics are. Obviously she changed up the lyrics in quite a few places, from small changes like "let's get down" and "go to boarding school" to more significant changes like "or that crystal methamphetamine", "municipal" (I think), and "get down like your tutor taught you to and prove it", which works so much better. But I think the live version sheds light on what some of the other lyrics actually are. Though I'm not exactly sure what all the lyrics are in the line before, I think it's pretty clear she says "you let his tattooed ass beat ya". I also don't think she ever says "cruel". I think it's always "cool".
And then there's the Pepsi. While I concede that the two syllables before "Pepsi" begin with a 'P' sound in the live version, I still think she says "vodka" on the studio version. (I had heard the live version when I first put forward that theory.) But I'm not convinced she says "P-P-Pepsi" on the live version either (even though that would sort of make sense coming a couple lines after "f-food cravings"). The vowel sounds on those syllables don't sound like schwas to me, but more like long os, especially the second syllable. Could she be saying a slang term for a drug she's mixing in her Pepsi?

She's just a girl with a big imagination, her childhood was so plain and boring she likes to dramatize events to make them more exciting, more movie-like. She sure has had a troubled past but maybe she just likes excess, just like when she says she likes gold and diamonds. Her imagination makes everything bigger, harsher, more provocative. I never take her lyrics for what it says, 80% are from her experience, 20% are decorations.
Maybe she had an anorexic period, maybe some of her classmates were, but nothing she says are that scandalous really. As Evil said, she's not advocating anything, just telling. Let's just hope american parents and 13 yo kids won't take it too seriously (sorry I know it's cliché). I don't want Lana to censure herself in order to sell or to please some stuck-up-minded people.

There's been a lot of drama over comments in status updates about the line "I'm a fan of pro-ana nation." I think it's an interesting subject, and would like to discuss it here, if we can avoid the drama.
While I agree with people critical of the line that it would be problematic if Lana were advocating anorexia, and I see the potential for anorexics to latch onto this, but I don't think that's what she's doing here. To the contrary. She's no more advocating anorexia than she is advocating drugs, drinking, getting beaten by someone with tats on his ass, or fucking your teachers. She's painting a picture of how fucked up she or other girls were in boarding school. The song is written from that perspective, but portrays that perspective as something fucked up.

I think Afraid's a pretty underrated song (well until I read Monicker's essay). Whenever I hear it, I have to stop whatever I'm doing and really focus on the lyrics. Her vocals sound really emotional and heartfelt and I like the fact it's not perfectly produced, it's still a bit raw.

I was just listening to this song while making a sandwich. Gosh, it’s such a good song. It’s so tender and heartbreaking. It’s an especially great song for nighttime. I love the loose quality it has, how it sounds like it was just a quick and spontaneous thing, recorded one night in a sudden flash of inspiration, like it just needed to come out. I love how understated but unique the backing track is with that incongruous drum machine and the little weird noises. I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
These lyrics, i think, are some of her most heartfelt. It’s just chock-full of such simple yet powerful and poignant lines that i think a lot of people can relate to. I especially love the line “the panic and the fear.” Anyone who suffers from panic attacks knows that it’s one of the worst feelings in the world.
Doesn’t the chorus sound like something you’ve heard before in another life? That melody seems to perfectly capture the song’s sentiments, that sense of feeling trapped and that realization that you have to do something, make some sort of change in your life. Your dead-end relationship has sort of become your comfort zone. You think you can change the relationship or even the other person, but you know you’re just lying to yourself.
Her falsetto in this song has a strange quality to it, it’s almost hysterical. And at the end when she abruptly comes out of it back into her lower register (as she’s repeating that she’s done being afraid), it makes me think of, like, when you’ve been crying for hours and you just suddenly snap out of it because you just physically cannot cry anymore.
What a fucking song.

I'm America's sweetheart
Trying to get away
You make it hard to leave
But it's easier for me to stay
Boy, I'm so afraid
And I've had it up to here
With the fighting, baby we're not
Fooling anyone these days
I don't want to stray
But boy, I'm so afraid
But it's not love that keeps me here
And it's not what you want to hear
So I'm going
Back to Santa Monica
New York to L.A.
Never coming back, boy
No matter what you do or say
'Cause I'm so afraid
And I've
Had it up to here
With the panic and the fear
There's nothing in your heart
Thought that I could make you change
I'm so afraid
But it's not love that keeps me here
We were just teenagers
When we fell in love
Driving in your fast car
Looking at the stars above
But it was not enough
You should never come between a
Woman and her dream and
A man who never knew his place
There's no easy way
To come back from where you came
But it's not love that keeps me here
And it's not what you want to hear
So baby now I'm going
Back to Santa Monica
New York to L.A.
Never coming back, boy
No matter what you do or say
'Cause I'm so afraid
Oh, I've
Had it up to here
With the panic and the fear
Nothing in your heart, boy
I thought that I could make you change
But I'm so afraid
And it's not love, it's just the fear
That you've put down for all these years
But I'm leaving now
I'm going
Back to Santa Monica
New York to L.A.
Never coming back, boy
No matter what you do or say
I am deathly afraid
Oh, I've had it up to here
With the panic and the fear
There's nothing in your heart
I thought that I could make you change
But I'm so afraid
Oh, it's not love that keeps me here
It's not love that keeps me here
I'm done being afraid
I am done being afraid
Oh, oh, oh...
