Lana shopping at 7-Eleven in Los Angeles, CA - July 28th, 2020
Chocolate Eyes replied to Elle's topic in Sightings
I think she would take this as a compliment. -
What’s the big deal with pointing out that someone has songs about “fucking and cheating”? Lana does as well, “mistress on the side” and countless other examples. Are we supposed to say these singers are all goody two shoes church going 30 year old virgins? Lol.

I also thought all the body shaming was due to people still being mad over the obvious IG posts from 2 months ago. Just looking for anything and everything they can pick on her for. Some of these people are the same ones who scream “body positive! Healthy at every size!”, get defensive when critics bring up Lizzo’s or Amy Schumer’s weight or applaud Adele’s weight loss. Yeah there’s a new thread on Atrl forum where some members are eyeing up a shirtless photo of Sean “ah I see why she went Karen for this”. Meanwhile in the thread yesterday they were calling her old and fat. Tbh, Sean looks much older for his age than Lana does so according to their logic he’s the one aging quicker, but society only focuses on how women age. Also note the irony if you’ve seen most of these popular “pick up artist” males. They’re saying “women over 21 are expired and not as attractive as they were at 19”, while they’re looking like homely soccer dads.

The thread on LDR at this certain thinspo forum is bad. Perhaps same level as the social justice stans on twitter. Anyone who is sensitive about EDs must stay away from that forum. But I rolled my eyes and laughed at the one user who said she better with the cop than Barrie. First time I heard anyone say that ever.

Taylor is interesting again! I didn't like any song on Reputation. Lover had potential but was mostly average/boring with only 3 songs I liked. As for Folklore, every song almost sounds the same so it's got the least variety of all her albums, but in a way it's one of her best works. It's cute and lyrically her best. She doesn't have the best or strongest voice but she works with what she's got and can make a good song.

Pretty much every guy she’s been involved with has been douchey in some way. Just pointing out the obvious that’s all over her songs, I know I’m not a judge on who she can or can’t date.

Evanescence "The Bitter Truth" Katy Perry's "Smile". I disliked her last album, but "Daisies" and "Harleys in Hawaii" were quite enjoyable so I have a good feeling about the new album.

Yeah, the idea of Tag supposedly being about that was people exaggerating because they were weirded out by Melanie's cute/baby image.

For others it's with the way we were lead on hearing the same snippets over and over again for a year. The final album versions and demos were pretty much the same thing. I suppose streaming and social media is also to blame for this reason.

I thought she looked more country girl than chola imo. Both whites and mexicans (poc) from the country wear cowboy/cowgirl gear. When I first saw Lana's post she instantly reminded me of this white woman who was a regular at the restaurant I used to work at in my hometown. She was very country and dressed/looked similar to the way Lana does in this update. Hair back in a low ponytail, flannel t-shirts, earrings (sometimes they were pearls and other times they were large hoop earrings), black eyeliner/falsies, and those Wrangler style jeans, work boots. I don't see actual cholos and/or latinos who grew up in a hood getting riled up over non-latinos dressing like cholos. If you look at the instagram account "thefoocommunity" (a hangout for latinos in the US who come from those backgrounds). Just today in one of their recent posts they are discussing Shia Lebouf getting cholo inspired tattoos for a role in a movie, most of the guys in the comments are joking "he's one of us now" and "he's invited to the carne asada", and others are saying he looks lame, but no talk about cultural appropriation.

I think it's kind of cute.

It never before crossed my mind that "you like your women Spanish" was about WOC latinas. Always thought it was about Spaniard women from Spain. When I heard the "dark, strong, and proud" part that follows, I always imagined a woman like Paz Vega or Monica Bellucci (dark haired and tan skinned Mediterranean white woman). Looking more into it though, don't New Yorkers refer to all latino people as "Spanish"? She grew up over there after all. Maybe that is questionable.

That's been my feeling on Left & Right all along too. I like it. It's a fun silly song and I'm going to play it again. Just that as you said, they've done much better in previous releases.

Then there's the fact that Cholo and lowrider subculture, are just a subculture popular within chicanos (Mexican-Americans). It's not latino culture or Mexican culture in general. My parents (native purepecha father and mestiza/castiza mother both born and raised in Mexico) didn't even know what cholos were until they came to the US. But apparently, the cholo/a thing has quite a number of admirers and followers in Japan.

In this case aren't they both "problematic"? If this is about Azealia pointing out Lana's friendship/collab with Asap Rocky for being a known abuser, it's a pot meet kettle situation since she defended Dr. Luke and wrote Kesha off as a liar. If it's about race, she isn't innocent there considering what she said about Zayn Malik.

For real. These comments are getting ridiculous. Amber Rose also gets hate comments from people claiming her son doesn't have enough black friends whenever she's posted videos of him playing with white or latino kids. There's always going to be some criticism no matter the situation. Don't have enough friends of a different race? You're probably racist. Have a few friends of a different race? You're probably only using them as tokens/props. Have more friends of a different race than your own? Cultural appropriation or fetishization, internalized racism, wannabe. I don't really talk to white, black, south asian, or middle eastern in my personal life because simply there aren't many of them in the area where I live. It's mostly Latinos and East/Southeast Asians here, therefor of course it's going to be the majority of the people I communicate with.

Speaking of the stage name. Anyone else had thoughts of what it would've been like if she had kept "May Jailer"? I kind of like it more than "Lana Del Rey".

Spanish is a European language and Spanish people are white. Is it really possible for a white person to "appropriate" another white ethnicity? I understand the weirdness of something like a white (or any non-east asian) koreaboo/weaboo giving themselves a totally random Japanese or Korean name, but I'm sure there are native women of Spain who look similar to Lana as they are of the same race. I never liked how she wore the headdress in the Ride video though. When I first heard of her that was one of the main pictures I remembered (the screen shot from Ride) and it put me off from her to the point where I almost didn't give her music a chance. Azealia's beef with Lana wasn't "white feminism. Banks was mainly triggered as a Trump supporter that Lana's rant was anti-Trump. As a latina, I think this claim that Tropico was exploiting "latino culture" in general is rather silly. The characters in the film were LA cholos and not every latino is a gangbanger. I'm assuming it was part of her Americana schtick and was quite cheesy but so was the film in general.

Sorry. The more I listen to that new Blackpink single, the less I like it. While I loved their earlier songs, I haven't been interested in anything they've put out/been featured in since Du-du. I also second what gyu said about the new Seventeen single.

Yes! I like that about Dreamcatcher too. It's rare for k-pop groups to do anything rock as it's mostly hip hop, r&b, and dancepop, or bubblegum pop. The only other group I can think of that played around with some rock was B.A.P. The first song I think has a little fantasy feel to it, the second song is more nu-metal ish.
