Instead of rehashing the same topic of Jack and Lana, let’s focus on something we can all agree on! And that’s the reality that if Lana did the same sort of sound every single album, we wouldn’t appreciate the records for what they are as their own. Yes, we would probably still like them and enjoy them, but Lana is a true artist because she can recount her experiences through so many different lenses and make it authentic. Born to Die is innovative, lyrically and sonically. Nobody has done it like her on that album. Paradise is a thoughtful and provocative extension of that album and is a soulful piece that only Lana Del Rey could create. Ultraviolence is full of fire, it’s raw, aggressive, but still cool and calm and collected. Honeymoon takes that even a step further with its subdued elegance and candid-but-abstract lyricism. Lust for Life is bright-eyed and brilliant in its narrative. Norman is casual and a soundtrack for daily life, it’s a look into Lana more intimately. And Chemtrails takes that to a more existential level as a moody meditation on fame. My point is - they’re all different. I love Jack and Lana’s sound but I think if they did three albums together in a row, I would of course love it, but what we love about Lana is how she can step into any genre and still make it her own. I’m sure that if Lana always made a “2.0” of her records, then people would take an issue with that. I’m also sure that Mike Dean is going to bring something fun and exciting to the table and help her reach whatever artistic vision she has this time around. It’s definitely going to be a change and that’s exciting! The uncertainty in that with room for something grand is exciting.

You should express your buried thoughts more often because man, when you do... I completely agree. These records are extensions of her identity. It always feels like a bit of a hit to the soul when they’re dismissed the way they can be, like you said.

The way this album is going to be her Blackout... a fiery, cult-status record that stays true to the artist’s style but adds an electronic twist and just so happens to be written partly in response to negative press -

The most realistic thing that happened, in my opinion - 1. Lana had a collection of songs that she wrote throughout 2020 with Jack Antonoff and Zach Dawes. 2. The songs were produced by Zach Dawes (as he and Lana were shown to have had in-person studio sessions together throughout 2020) with the bulk of the production being done in late 2020. 3. The album was “finished” but maybe something didn’t feel right or wasn’t quite what Lana was going for. 4. She took the songs to Mike Dean sometime within the last two months (as she stated she wasn’t quite sure what was coming next to Annie Mac in January 2021, but then suddenly, in March 2021, has a whole album ready for release this year) 5. Her and Mike aren’t quite done working on the production of the album, but must know what the sound of the record will be, as something album-related is slated to happen next week. 6. Mike said he and Lana are planning to work with each other for a long time, so some new songs that they have been writing together since ~February/March may make an appearance on BB (hence, Mike not wanting to talk about the album/his fear of “jinxing” it, and the inevitable delay) or be saved for a later album. -

I don’t know, guys...she seems to be pulling out the big guns this era. I doubt she would want this album to be a low-key release if she got Mike Dean — somebody known for super dynamic, high-energy production — to produce it. I have a feeling that the album cycle is really going to begin in a week, as teased, but there’s also going to be a decent amount of build-up and push for this album. Norman was actually heavily publicized upon release (even by Lana’s usual standards) so I can imagine that this album will try and be the same, if not more. Even Chemtrails — her most low-key release yet — made so much in sales with all of those vinyl variants and general interest from her very secure fanbase. I can’t imagine Blue Banisters to be a step backwards from that. -

Mike mentioned Jeff Bhasker being his link of familiarity to Lana. Jeff worked on Diet Mountain Dew, National Anthem, Carmen, and Wait for Life (so he’s probably a frequent collaborator with Emile Haynie). That, paired with him staying true to her “classical” sound, makes me think this will be as bombastic as BTD. Based on BoZ’s comments, the title track could be the Video Games of the album.... This album coming out by/before January 2022 would be PERFECT as the BTD era started around this time 10 years ago. I really think we’ll see an updated version of Lana’s take on a classical cinematic sound accompanied by heavy, old-skool hip-hop beats. -

I know that Lana finished mixing UV in March 2014 so she was able to release it in June 2014. Mike makes it seem like they’re not quite at that stage yet, but probably are close to it, as the era is allegedly starting next week and she’s said before that she doesn’t put out a single unless she knows what the whole album will sound like. I think before the end of this year we’ll hear it, though! -

I think so too! I mean, Lana literally made UV with Dan in two weeks after she already thought the album was done. I don’t see why she couldn’t be doing the same now, especially with how Mike’s collaborators have such a fast turnaround rate between making music and actually putting it out! -

Yessss! And Dan really made all the difference between the UV 2013 vs UV 2014 sessions so I definitely feel like Mike is going to bring something super new and dynamic -

Ahhh so exciting! I wonder if this a BTD situation where she wrote the album with a few guys but then had someone else do most of the production! Maybe she wrote it with Jack and Zach but then had Mike do all of the heavy lifting on the production. -

Born to Die - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
IanadeIrey replied to Beautiful Loser's topic in Post-Release Threads
What a stunning debut. I don’t think I’ve ever talked about how much I love Born to Die on here and that’s a shame because it truly is one of the best albums of all time (alongside Lana’s other records of course). The STAR POWER this album holds - despite being an album created before her career even took off - is immaculate. There’s so much personality and attitude that feels fully-formed and developed for what felt like such a new artist (but of course, we know that Lana has always had in herself a natural-born gift for writing). The storytelling of this album, the way it exudes Hollywood glamour with this emcee swag, is innovative and truly something that is once-in-a-lifetime. I truly don’t think there will ever be an artist in the next few years to come who is as prolific as Lana Del Rey, who effortlessly weaves words and melodies derived from her experiences to build these magical worlds. Born to Die is her doing that at its grandest, and over the years we’ve seen her strip away some of the background of this world-building and still take us to magical places. Wow. The title track is a soaring, mournful lament on lost love. Off to the Races is an epic that makes me think of the great work of Charles Bukowski. Blue Jeans is all-things-cool and has this smoky, classical-American feel to it. Video Games is a classic, too much to say. Diet Mountain Dew is another iconic song, one that represents the legacy of both Lana Del Rey’s coolness and Lizzy Grant’s kitsch. National Anthem appeared as vapid to critics and other alt. singers but is really a brilliant commentary on society and indulgence, it’s an allegory within itself, truly a masterpiece that was ahead of its time, and to me, contains some of Lana’s best lyricism of all time (that bridge is my favourite thing ever), and so on and so forth... Can’t believe it’s going to turn 10 in January. Truly a body of work that has stood the test of time and will continue to pave the way for generations to come.- 519 replies

Yes! That was on January 10th when she posted the album cover + tracklist. I was actually quite surprised when she posted that edit with the audio of her saying that because I wouldn’t think she would want to revisit that whole incident, but I feel like that totally ties in with her telling her own story in response to being taken out of context and vilified in the media. I think you’re onto something... -

I doubt the collab is with Zella, I feel like she would have teased Lana being on it since she’s such a household name and the teasers she posted really don’t indicate Lana being on it either. Plus, they’re good friends and Zella has always teased Weyes Blood’s involvement on their collabs, who is also a good friend of Zella’s, so I don’t see why Lana wouldn’t get the same treatment. I also think it’s interesting to note that insiders only seem to care enough about collabs between “bigger” artists to tease them. So I think it’s going to be on another very commercial artist‘s record. Also, I don’t think the collab is with Nikki Lane. I don’t think insiders would have access to an artist like Nikki’s files, since (I’m assuming) they get their stuff from a server associated with the label, and Nikki isn’t signed to a major label group like Universal, she’s signed to two independent labels. -

Which Lana songs do you relate to the the most?
IanadeIrey replied to latothemoon's topic in Lana Thoughts
White Dress - it really brings me back to a time when I was young and everything was pretty easy and simple. Now that I’m starting to establish a place in my work industry, it makes me look back fondly on a time when I wasn’t fully engaging with my ambitions and I was just living my life without any worries. Lana really captures that reflective and slightly bittersweet feeling perfectly. Video Games also makes me feel that way, considering Lana wrote it when she had let go of her own personal ambitions, as she put it. Old Money also reminds me of family legacies and the nostalgia of it all really resonates with me. <3 -
