Oh my god, I hope it's not true.

When I bought BTD just a few days after it had been released, I already knew VG and BTD because of the radio, so OTTR was the first song that I didn't knew when I listened to the album and I immediately knew that it was a fantastic decision to buy BTD !

I was fascinated by the unique, poetic and beautiful lyrics and the way her voice changed again and again during the song. I really love that glamour gangster feeling the song has. Imo OTTR represents Lana's image at the beginning of her "real" career (end of 2011). She called herself a "Gangster Nancy Sinatra" and I totally feel this in lines like " Likes to watch me in the glass room bathroom, Chateau Marmont, slippin' on my red dress, puttin' on my makeup, glass film, perfume, cognac, lilac fumes" or "My old man is a thief and I'm gonna stay and pray with him 'til the end".

The interview @@SitarHero posted helps a lot with the Lanalysis. If we can trust her words ( ), OTTR describes the lifestyle she used to have when she was with that man, that means they lived in LA and moved to Vegas because he liked to gamble. Lana wasn't talented and that's why she just went swimming all the time. This would even match the lyrics "Swimming pool glimmering darling, white bikini off with my red nail polish, watch me in the swimming pool bright blue ripples you". Swimming pools seem to play a big role in OTTR and as she spent most of her time swimming in Vegas, we have an explanation for that.

So I think, the basic idea of the song is definitely true but I'm almost sure that Lana added many gangster details to the lyrics.
Looking at Barrie I can't imagine that Lana once dated a guy with a "gold chain on" but who knows, maybe her taste for men changed  .

Right now I'm actually wondering about something that I never really realized. I know that alcohol is mentioned sometimes on BTD in songs like Carmen and This Is What Makes Us Girls and these deal with her teenage years. Lana says she stopped drinking when she was about 18. In OTTR it seems like her man is drinking ("black Cristal", "cognac") but maybe she does too ("Bacardi chasers") ?
Also she is talking about "Riker's Island", so like already mentioned in the Lanalysis thread she could be talking about K and her younger years (she mentions Coney Island which is also used in Carmen for example, a song that probably describes her lifestyle when she was about 17).
When I look at her writing style, I would say that it was written with the rest of the BTD album, which means that it isn't old. And of course she can still write a song about K today but....
We assume that she dated him before the Sirens album, so she couldn't be older than 17. First of all, her parents sent her to a boarding school because of her alcohol addiction and I don't think they would let her go to Vegas just for fun and her school also wasn't in LA, right ? Furthermore she said she wasn't good at gambling but if the song talks about K, she wouldn't even been allowed to enter a casiono. Oh and she says she has a "Las Vegas past" but according to the interview this can't be true at all.

I know my post is pretty confusing but I had to say it.
OTTR is one of Lana's best songs but I wouldn't be surprised if it is totally made up and she also lied in the interview

@ I love the form you posted but I think people will discuss the song better without one. Don't judge me if I'm wrong

Love at first listen! I missed out on this one when it leaked but finally came across it some days ago.
The guitar gives an overall folk sound, the lyrics sound a bit romantic, and her voice adds a mysterious vibe. This song would be perfect to play while sitting outside on a warm afternoon and watching the sunset.

    Overall rating: 5
First impression: Fucking loved it played it over and over again.
    Impression now: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    iTunes plays: 51
Songs I play along with it: Diet Mountain Dew (Demo) (the "hit me my darling tonight, I don't know why but I like it" one)
What I like about it: The lyrics, the beat, the screaming/shouting the background.
What I dislike about it: Nothing... oh apart from she never does it live!
Memories I associate with this song: Being hungover on the train home.
Colors/images that come to mind: Like black, blue, Las Vagas lights.
Favorite lyrics: "I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving I'm your little harlot, starlet Queen of Coney Island Raising hell all over town" "Light of his life, fire of his loins
Keep me forever, tell me you own me"

Maybe this is old news, but she appears to be saying "L.A. L.A." at the beginning, right before the first verse. I never noticed before now, but it really makes a lot of sense given the contents of the lyrics and how it was presented in Tropico. It's more obvious in the Mokadem remix that starts out more acapallaish.

I really love On Our Way, I think it's a great example of one of the main reasons why I love Lana. She's not really a genius poet, singer or guitar player (heh) but her lyrics are extremely personal. And not only because of how much she opens up in them but how much personality they show. I don't think a lot of songwriters could get away with writing about Chevrolets all the time or picking up cheap lip gloss form K-Mart but I like it with Lana because I know that's her whole style and every time she mentions little things like that I feel like I'm getting to know her more and more. This probably one of the reasons why I don't like people covering her songs, it just sounds weird hearing some random girl on the internet say things only Lana would say. I think there are a lot of musicians who are either great poets or who have mastered their instrument but I'll never be nearly as invested in them because they don't show any personality in their songs even if they objectively are talented.

  17. Summersault liked a post in a topic by Philomene in Anthony Mandler on the state of music video in 2013
We spoke with Mandler—who directed Lana Del Rey’s 30-minute video “Tropico,” released earlier this month—about the state of the music video in 2013, what he thought of Miley Cyrus’ video output this year, and what he makes of Daniel Radcliffe.

Josh Duboff: This was a really big year for event music videos, what with “Tropico,” the Miley Cyrus videos released this summer, the Beyoncé visual album. Did it seem to you like music videos reached a new level of cultural prominence in 2013?

Anthony Mandler: Well, I actually don’t think they’ve gone anywhere, if you look at it. In the era of YouTube and the internet, we encompass the most watched programming there is. When you talk about 100 million views, you’re up there with major award shows, things like that . . . Rihanna and I have done 17 videos together, we have like a billion and a half views. So I think if you’re going to look at the pop culture needle, the ebb and flow, videos have always been at the center of that.

Right, and YouTube obviously changed everything in terms of the overall accessibility of music videos.

Well, it’s the ultimate brand builder, the music video. There were these two lines crossing. The label was making less and less money because no one is buying albums. And the artist was finding their success didn’t have to be tied to how many albums they sold. It could be tied to, “Hey, I sell no albums, but I tour, I have a lot of merch, I’m the face of Givenchy. . .” What I’m getting at, and this is true of all artists, from Rihanna and Jay Z on down, they’re willing to put more money [into their videos], leverage the relationship with the label, put their own money behind [them], to put more on the screen, to make a bigger statement. “Tropico” is made up of three songs that have been out for over a year, but it’s causing this massive splash because of what we did. [Lana] was willing to take that chance, when most labels would say “The album’s over. Why are you going to spend this much on something’s that’s dated, that’s old. What’s the new single? What’s the next album?”

Who would Beyoncé be if we didn’t see her in those videos? Who would Gaga be if she wasn’t a visual artist? Rihanna has built her career on being a visual artist. Look what Beyoncé is saying: “I’m putting out a visual album.”

I don't get the G&M hate. Some say the lyrics are trite or cliche, but compared to BE and BD, this song is light years ahead. I rather like the groupie/life imitates art line, I think it's perhaps a clever nod to the people in the press that slam her.  The god's dead line also reminds me of the '66 cover of Time magazine, and the screaming woman brings some cheap old horror film vibe. In my opinion, it's far from one of the worse tracks of Paradise.
