  1. Also #tbt to that time Stevie was relegated to being Taylor Swift's fucking backup singer while she butchered Stevie's songs: http://ew.com/article/2010/01/31/tayor-swift-and-stevie-nicks-grammys-duet-out-of-sight-or-out-of-tune/amp/
  2. Yes. God I feel old. "Lover's Fa... oops, @Elle beat me to the punch. Also, #tbt to when Jimmy Iovine compared Lana to Stevie Nicks. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/interscope-records-jimmy-iovine-lana-288663
  3. I used to know a guy whose parents named him DM after Depeche Mode. Gentlest soul I ever met. Fun fact: The Bloodhound Gang started out as a Depeche Mode cover band.
  4. When the title Tropico first surfaced, there was a lot of speculation about where the name came from. People wondered if it had anything to do with a video game of the same name. Or if it was a reference to the Pat Benatar album. I just assumed it was a word Lana came up with independently, or perhaps that she forgot Pat Benatar's album was where the word first entered her mind. (After all, she does often reference others' lyrics and album titles seemingly unconsciously. See: Lust for Life.) At any rate, I never gave it much thought after the release of the film, which I watched a grand total of two times (three if you count searching through it for screenshots for this thread). But recently I've developed a possible theory about where the name may have come from that I don't recall seeing discussed on the forum before (though maybe I just missed it): Tropico is/was the name of a real place in California. Now just a neighborhood in Glendale, CA and Los Angeles' Atwater Village, it was once incorporated as an independent city from 1911 until 1918 when the upper half merged with Glendale and the lower half merged with Los Angeles. Today, there seem to be only a few references to the name of the city that once was: a post office, a seedy motel, a new apartment project, an old folks' home. Here are links to several pages about "the lost city of Tropico": https://www.kcet.org/shows/lost-la/the-lost-city-of-tropico-california http://atwater-village.blogspot.com/2007/02/sunday-drive-through-lost-city-of.html https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20120717082459/http://www.glendalehistorical.org/tropico.html http://waterandpower.org/museum/Early_Views_of_Glendale.html https://calisphere.org/search/?q=tropico (There's probably some great cover/fan art material in some of the PDFs here.) Tropico was also home to Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where Walt Disney and many old Hollywood celebrities are buried or have their ashes interred. I have no idea if Lana is aware of any of this history-- given her proximity to it I suspect it may have inspired the name either way-- but it is certainly in keeping with themes in her work of old Hollywood and lost Americana. Feel free to post anything else interesting you find about the city of Tropico.
  5. Is this tweet of Rob's a reference to this? https://twitter.com/robgrantdotcom/status/820025191363473408 You don't think she'd actually reuse the title "Stairway to Heaven", would she?
  6. Giving a cop Lana's "Pepsi-Cola"... now that might actually stop police violence.
  7. Not that I could find, but a couple interviewers mentioned Mazzy Star in their write-ups: http://smoda.elpais.com/celebrities/lana-del-rey-no-hay-nada-mas-autentico-que-yo/ https://www.wonderlandmagazine.com/2013/04/19/flashback-friday-lana-del-rey/ No. Her claimed time spent in Alabama remains a mystery.
  8. When viewed from the homepage, the thread name is truncated to "What is Lana's best tit..." @SitarHero Where's the poll question, "Left or Right?"
  9. If you play it backwards she says "Paul is dead".
  10. Lana Del Rey: Perfectly fine with using her music as the soundtrack for your vehicular homicide. If I'm not mistaken, this is the only part of the interview that wasn't in the condensed online version, no? Seems weird to cut just this part, especially for online where you don't have layout constraints. I'm assuming she called Janick about this because Shady Aftermath is under Interscope? I'd be more curious to see a readout of their conversation about "Shady CXVPHER". I was so disappointed when I came to the word "records". I was hoping Courtney bought Lana something vinyl to wear. Leave a beautiful corpse, live my life on the run
  11. I'm not. I'm just good at making use of the Advanced Search function. When I want to find an old post, I try to remember some relatively unique word that would have been in the post. In this case, I had a vague sense I had joked about the conspiracy theory that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain once or twice. So I just searched for all the posts made by me where I used the word "Courtney". Simple as that.
  12. Finally circling back to this after the "Lust for Life" single interruption. I'll be curious to read the full print version, but I found even the "condensed" online version fascinating to read, just being a fly on the wall while these two great artists chat. Welcome to this Lana rabbit hole LanaBoards, Courtney! Please allow me to introduce you to @@trayertrash. And ignore these old posts. I still think you did it. OK, not really, but all my friends did back in the day. Oh man, where is @Monicker for all this conversation of Lana talking about mixing & mastering, or the amount of reverb put on her vocals? That reminds me, an engineer (who I won't name) I contacted via Soundcloud awhile back who mixed some Lana tracks told me after the first mix he did for Lana "they said 'more reverb!!' and make it 'less posh'". Not completely sure who exactly he meant by "they", but he also told me those BTD demo tracks a certain manager sloppily leaked on Soundcloud were what "they" gave him for reference. Also, I am totally here for (as the kids say) her dissing BTD-style production. Cheers, Lana. Aw, come on Lizzy, I love that interview and that phase of your artistic development. Jives with other articles/interviews that talk about her really wanting to sign with 5 Points as a band, not a solo act. I sometimes imagine an alternate universe where Lana broke as Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena or The Rich Whores. And Trump isn't president. As someone who has been perhaps the most critical of how she has responded to, well, just about everything, I have to say I've noticed this. She seems to have a newfound c'est la vie attitude toward leaks, the press, and other past career-related frustrations. Lana explicitly acknowledging @@FROGGO's pet peeve. Courtney, you already own violet, you whore. You can do a lot worse than copping the Shangri-Las. I fully endorse this influence. And you can really hear it on the beginning of L4L. Sorry to disappoint all the Rick haterz. Despite the collabs and what are essentially guest producers, for better or worse, this is Rick's baby. Yet again. I really feel like L4L suffers from too many cooks in the kitchen. It's a bit of a mishmash with no clear vision in pursuit of a more commercial sound. I find it interesting that Courtney Love has always wanted to work with Max Martin. Surprising and yet entirely unsurprising. There's a lot that could be said about that. Although a lot of it might hew uncomfortably close to very gendered reading of her career. Also interesting: No mention of Benny Blanco. Dust paid!
  13. Yes, please! Thank you! Yeah, depending on how they went about condensing, it might be easier to just add what they cut out to what's online rather than starting from scratch. Or tbh, scans would be great in the meantime.
  14. You can definitely hear that Shangri-Las influence at the beginning, arguably the best part. The Weeknd's vocals are really good. I can understand people preferring him not being on it, but I don't understand anyone saying his vocal is "awful". Some of the lyrics are really cringey and/or unimaginative. There's parts I like, but overall, the song as a whole... I'm just not feeling it that much. :shrugs: Maybe my opinion will change after more listens, but rather I suspect the shelf life for this song won't be that long for a lot of you after the initial hype dies down. Yeah, that was my first thought on hearing that part.

  16. ZOMG! NEW INSTAGRAM POST IN SPOILER!!!
  17. OK. Then I think I know the exact location she took it (perhaps someone can confirm by enhancing the sign): Ann Henck Stewart Memorial Sequoia Grove at Heaps Peak Arboretum. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Heaps+Peak+Arboretum+Day+Use+Area/@34.2349537,-117.1589848,3a,75y,66.29h,90t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1s-ozk9G9v3vNE%2FVzdzF2LhpyI%2FAAAAAAAAMdE%2FZ0GM9JuP1ekc_Y28r7O1gI7Sg13AexWewCJkC!2e4!3e11!6s%2F%2Flh4.googleusercontent.com%2F-ozk9G9v3vNE%2FVzdzF2LhpyI%2FAAAAAAAAMdE%2FZ0GM9JuP1ekc_Y28r7O1gI7Sg13AexWewCJkC%2Fw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya235.01645-ro-0-fo100%2F!7i8704!8i4352!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c4a9c35cd1af3b:0xf87d0989059c8f33!8m2!3d34.233999!4d-117.160518!6m1!1e1 https://www.hikespeak.com/trails/heaps-peak-arboretum-sequoia-trail-lake-arrowhead/
  18. Should we keep this as a separate thread, or make a combined "National Anthem"/"I Want It All" thread that notes the differences in lyrics?
