I feel like that's because we're in a world were we believe this sort of idea about sex to be dirty and unacceptable. But I think this is an exploration of Lana's personal sexuality. Of course it's harder for us to connect to it because it's not how we feel about sex. However this vein of sexual exploration has been constant through Lana's work and while I don't think it's there for shock value, I do believe it's just what turns her on. Lyrics are personal and we should remember she's not necessarily writing for us but for herself, even just as a cathartic measure.

You weren't being forceful, I just don't necessarily agree with your perspective (a good thing, as it creates interesting conversation, right?). Thanks for weighing in though, your opinion is interesting ^_^

Well we see a lot of Lana playing submissive and it's easy to argue for her anti-feminism with older lyrics like "you can be the boss", "I like it when you treat me mean", et cetera. But I think on this new album, while it is sexual, it's kind of the flip-side. In "Cola" and "Burning Desire", I get less kept woman than I have in the past and more aggressive femme fatale. Bad if you don't like sex, but nothing to really indicate an argument on feminism. Yet.

She just seemed so sincere and emotional when she said this. It actually had some sort of depressing effect on me, ngl.

How is sex not a deep idea? Everything about sex is meaningful in some way.

I've only heard the snippets but wow I'm really excited about the EP. I think it's going to be great, even if it's different. I really believe any material we hear from Lana is just greater insight into her writing, thoughts and feelings. Honestly I just feel so blessed to be alive when such a beautiful and intricate person is out creating art.

She has plenty of already-written material she could have used for this release instead, but she wrote new songs which shows that she does care. I highly doubt she sat down and thought to herself "I don't really want to do this album so I'm not gonna try very hard with writing these songs." The fact that she has gotten plastic surgery, admits to hating performing and being very nervous about it, and plenty of other things she's done proves that she cares what other people think of her and that's she's very self-critical, so I really don't think she'd let these specific songs be released if she didn't care or try very hard. I think you have a horrible attitude in this case, you're coming off to me like this: "Oh, Lana didn't impress me with this album, so that means she obviously doesn't care about the artistic value of her work anymore, because she absolutely does everything in her career with me in mind." I don't mean to be rude but that's how you're coming across and it really upset me. I know a handful of hopeful-musicians and I know how much they put into their writing and their music, so I just find it extremely disrespectful that you'd go as far as saying she doesn't care anymore just because you don't like what you've heard of the new album.

I haven't listened to much of the new snippets-only American-and I'm completely fine with people's differing opinions and all, but reading this last bit really upset me. I think it's very disrespectful to Lana that you'd say she doesn't care about her music or the artistic value in it just because it didn't appeal to you. Maybe she is changing as a person, so she wrote in a different style or just wanted to experiment with sounds more on this rerelease? I don't know really, but it just makes me very sad to see you say she doesn't care because you don't like it. Personally, I think if she didn't care then she wouldn't have bothered making this EP, or having the Ride video be 10 minutes long. Idk, that actually really upset me so I'm just going to stop now.

To me, the video is about someone who's been treated like trash, desperately looking for community, and finding it in (to the viewer) unexpected places. It's not just controversial; it's worldview-challenging. I think it's asking the viewer to re-evaluate how we think about human dignity.

Everyone's life experience is different, but most of us know what it's like to be treated like trash. Some methods are more large-scale and life-threatening than others. A person whose entire tribe is being "thrown away" is in a different physical circumstance from someone raised in relative physical safety who chooses to leave. But on a psychological level -- at a deep soul level -- if you're told enough times that you're trash, the desperation and despair is real. It doesn't go away just because someone, somewhere can find a way to tell you some way that you're privileged. At the point of desperation, I think any such privilege becomes theoretical.

At that point, the last thing you need is a community that tells you who's more important than whom. You need a community that tells you, you matter too.
