In Greil Marcus' book Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century, he traces a fascinating history of modern art, mentioning notable art movements including dadaism, situationism, lettrism, and futurism. The first time I saw L.D.R. in concert, I was in such a state of ecstatic intoxication that I sensed that what I was seeing on stage was a visionary culmination of the all the historical stages of art from ancient times up till now. And now, with the advent of the new Amerika-USSA, I am reminded that the futurists became fascists when Benito Mussolini came to power.

^ Another masterpiece from the beautiful and lovely L.D.R.

Now that you mention it, during the beginning of Money Power Glory there's a sound that, when I first heard it, sounds kinda like somebody flipping through or shuffling a deck of playing cards. On second thought, taking into account the title of the song, it could be the sound of a stack of money being flipped through or shuffled. Incidentally, I noticed a couple of interesting things in the Candy Necklace music video. At about 2:37 L.D.R. makes a curious gesture with her left hand which, ostensibly, appears to merely be her adjusting her necklace -- she adjusts the necklace moving it from left to right. Now, this would be nothing if not for the fact that we have a precedent for this type of gesture in the Born to Die music video at about 3:02 where she uses her right hand, this time, to make a "throat-slit" gesture across her neck from ear to ear, left to right. Returning to the Candy Necklace music video, at about 3:38 we are shown the outside of a certain building which appears to be a hotel, or perhaps an apartment building. Strangely, the word "Heater" is displayed along the side of the building. At first I thought that, perhaps, the word was really "Theater" and the letter "T" was just out of frame, but, the building does not appear to be a theater. And I recalled that in old black and white Hollywood noir movies of the mid-20th century, "Heater" is a slang term for a pistol. I make no claim to have any kind of definitive interpretation of L.D.R.'s art, other than a perception in her art, at times, of a sense of gloom and preoccupation with death, and its this spooky side to L.D.R. that is one of the things that draws me to her art.     [358]

Directly after WITHOUT YOU on BTD is LOLITA ... or is it Lalita, another name for Maya-Shakti??? http://www.shreemaa.org/worship-of-goddess-lalita/

I wish there was one book I could recommend ... lately I've been reading Frithjof Schuon, who speaks of the Perennial Philosophy -- if one were studying Metaphysics, that would probably be where I would go

But in the past it's been people like Alvin Boyd Kuhn, Stephan Hoeller, Carl Jung, Algis Uždavinys, Arthur Waite, Franz Hartmann, Manly P. Hall, etc. and whatever I could find in English on Kabbalah -- none are easy reads but I find I have actually understood them more through the lens of Lana's work, intentionally or not on her part

But perhaps the source of her knowledge is summed up in the passage from Psalm 51 that she flashes during "Body Electric": "Behold, thou lovest truth in the inward affections: therefore hast thou taught me wisdom in the secret of mine heart."

Nostalghia. The production is so close to something like a darker Honeymoon. And the lyrics are very lana-esque. A bit like Ultraviolence.

Edit: her first album is one I never related to Lana, but her album Imāgo definitely relates (the first video is a single from it), and her B Sides release (second video) as well. I feel like Nostalghia furthers the cinematic production and lyricism I wish Lana had kept up after Honeymoon.

I've only seen Lana Del Rey live in concert twice. Once during the Endless Summer Tour, and once during the L.A. to the Moon Tour; so I can only base my opinion of L.D.R.'s live shows on these two experiences. I must say that it was a disappointment to hear Lana singing over pre-recorded vocals, and I wish she would just get rid of them, I'd rather hear Lana's voice, even if it's not perfect and she makes mistakes. Having said that, for me, the great appeal of a Lana Del Rey show goes beyond just seeing her and hearing her voice, although this is the central feature. In my humble opinion, when I go to a Lana Del Rey show, I'm not just going to see some pop star, I'm going to some kind of modern day mystical ceremony or ritual. At that first show, Lana and Courtney Love were about an hour late, it was an open-air venue, and the show didn't begin until after nightfall, and I believe this was a deliberate part of the show. It is well known among esotericists that the human mind becomes more susceptible at night. Although the screaming fans at times hindered my ability to listen to Lana, I enjoyed being in the presence of that intense energy; this was also an integral part of the show. I realize that I am such a fan of L.D.R. that I lose my objectivity. This is just my humble opinion.

Well, of course, the definitive box set would be one that contains everything Elizabeth Woolridge Grant ever recorded....so something of this nature is very unlikely to be released in my lifetime.......especially since....L.D.R., with her scarlet roses, steel cylinders, and unknown pleasures....visions in her eyes..."into Your hands I commit my spirit".......a final glimpse into eternity

The first time I heard Yes To Heaven, I interpreted it as Lana merely speaking to her loved one and exhorting him to, I suppose, reciprocate her love. Upon further listenings I instead interpreted the song as Lana being the voice of God, exhorting the listener to say yes to Heaven; exhorting us to say yes to God (the divine feminine, Shekinah, etc.). Yes, I realize this is just symbolic, not literal.
