That's so awesome to hear how you've evolved over time it gives me hope for some of her higher songs for me in the future. I also totally get what you mean by trying to sound like her since its her song and obviously it sounds beautiful when she sings it. I try not to with certain parts of certain songs because I don't sounds as good and the problem really lies in that she sometimes uses effects like layering and lots of reverb and there just isn't a way to recreate that naturally. Or at least I try not to be hard on myself when it doesn't sound as nice because those effects can make a real difference. This was especially the case with Brooklyn Baby. I did that one, hated it, but then added reverb (like she did) and it made the sound a lot more listenable so I felt a little better. I haven't tried layering or anything like that - I want to get good at singing rawly before trying to manipulate a bunch of effects to make it sound better so I'm trying to avoid songs like West Coast. My favorite one I've recorded myself doing was actually Old MoneyI try to make it my own when I can but I'm just still so new to the singing thing that I don't really even know what I'm doing most of the time haha. Oh and good luck with your performance as well! I appreciate the time you took to write all of that out! Hopefully I can take a singing class at my college next spring (my schedule wouldn't allow for it this fall). It didn't quote it all, but thank you so much for your kind response! I felt like I could totally relate to everything you said and I appreciate the tips/video. Especially about not being heard in a group - its the worst. I literally refuse to go through drive-throughs because they can't ever hear me and I get upset having to repeat myself. I've always been very lazy with my voice (I still am half the time) but I'm actively thinking about it and trying to improve. That Cola note kills me not only because its high, but I can't even make the same noise? Hers is like a "yeoooawh" and mine is.. not. But I'm not really expecting to be able to do that nicely or at all for a while since I'm just starting. I recorded myself doing Yayo the other week and it wasn't great. But I'm also scared to really sing as openly as I can because I live in an apartment and I don't want my neighbors to hear! It makes a difference when I do because I did try it once and sounded so much better. And for real on singing in public. My sisters want me to sing karaoke with them and I always say no even though I want to. But I don't really want to until I know its going to be amazing. I dream that the one day I say yes that I'll go up there and blow everyone away in the first shot, haha. I made the mistake of telling my boyfriend I like to sing and he occasionally jokingly (but not really joking) asks me to sing to him and has told me he really wants to hear me. Maybe one day. I do have a friend who is out in L.A. trying to make it as a singer. I've thought about seeing if she'd help me but I'm too shy and I don't want her to think I'm using her (she apparently has some connections to where if she wanted an album out it would happen - she just isn't happy with her work to put one out yet). I really just want to do this as a fun pasttime because I love the whole process so much. I wish I had gotten into it a lot sooner. One last thought... does anyone else make a playlist of instrumentals, play them in your room, sing to them, and pretend you are Lana and fans are cheering and you are actually good at singing? I did that all the time this summer. Poor, poor neighbors. A girl can dream!

According to the video in the OP, I am from an E2 to a C5. I've always had a kind of deeper, quiet voice for a girl and its very monotonous. I've only been actively trying to work on my singing voice since the beginning of summer and I have never had any formal classes or training. I've recorded myself singing several Lana songs and surprisingly the songs I sound the best at (but still not good) are her mid-range ones rather than the deeper ones. I think my voice is so monotone that deeper songs just exaggerate it and I sound terrible (GOD when I tried AFFA ). It helps me a lot to have to occasionally reach into the higher stuff because it makes my sounds more varied and alive. I do catch myself trying to imitate her when I sing, but I tend to try and sing the way she does live rather than the album versions if possible, particularly with Born to Die and Ride. I feel comfortable singing almost all of her songs that aren't Sirens-high, but it doesn't always sound great. I've been trying to improve the monotonous part of my voice in both my talking and singing and I think I'm starting to make progress. I used to talk/sing in my throat badly and I basically don't do that anymore. People can hear me better now that I am kind of projecting more so that helps. I don't know how well I'll sound as far as just my raw voice but we'll see. I've gotten to where I don't cringe when I hear it so that's good. I'm hoping I can get just good enough to record my own stuff because I really, really love writing and I'd like to make some of my songs into something I can actually listen to. I badly want to be able to sing Yayo and my dream is to hit that high note in Cola perfectly. Sorry I'm kind of rambling. I just love singing and I don't have anyone I can really talk to about it because if I do they all want to hear and I'm just not ready for that yet.

Alright, thanks! I suppose if it isn't likely she'll come down then whether or not I can bring a CD in to get signed is probably irrelevant. Oh well, I'm still probably going to go!

Things I have CDs Born to Die Deluxe Target CD in Jewel Case Paradise CD Ultraviolence Standard CD in Jewel Case Ultraviolence Deluxe CD in Cardsleeve Ultraviolence Deluxe Target CD in Cardsleeve Vinyl Born to Die Standard Vinyl Paradise Vinyl Ultraviolence Deluxe Vinyl (from box set) Ultraviolence Deluxe Vinyl Urban Outfitters Misc Box Set Things Ultraviolence Box 4 Ultraviolence Prints Other Sleeveless Lana Tee Shirt 2014 North American Tour Shirt I also have the single CDs for Summertime Sadness, Video Games/Blue Jeans, and Dark Paradise coming to me in the mail and I am buying a Born to Die box off of someone on here soon too. My goal is to have both box sets and all of the singles in vinyl and CD form (if possible - some only some in one or the other) as well as the different physical copies of each album (i.e. the standard, deluxe, etc. of each in vinyl and CD format). But I think I'm going to take a break with what I have for now because I'm starting to go broke. But collecting her stuff is so addicting.

Awesome! I feel a lot better now though I probably should have asked first if I was that worried lol. But anyways, thank you so much for all of your help on this thread, I really appreciate it! One more question (for anyone), do you guys think we'll get a 7" picture disc for West Coast or would it have been out already if she were going to do one since the single has been out for months now? I saw a fanmade picture for one the other day and I want it to be a real thing so badly.
-
Well its not on the internet anymore since I bought it or I'd send a link but its identical to the one under CD Promo Single in Slimcase (Germany) that is listed in the OPs of this thread.
-
That's so true! I didn't even think about doing that haha. Is it worth it if they are legit? Because now I feel dumb for buying a real (I hope) Summertime Sadness one from a different person but its too late now.
-
Thank you! I figured if it was real it would have already been listed here but I wanted to make sure. Too bad, its pretty but not worth the money if its fake.
-
Does anyone know if this is legit? http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANA-DEL-REY-OFF-TO-THE-RACES-CD-SINGLE-SLIM-JEWEL-CASE-PROMO-RARE-BORN-TO-DIE-/161369773698?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2592635682 I know OTTR is officially a single but this guide doesn't have it listed. I don't know if this is something homemade or if its really a rare promo single CD. There is another one like it for Burning Desire and Young and Beautiful as well.

Which songs off Ultraviolence deserve a music video the most?
Anthem replied to Venice Jesus Whore's topic in Lana Thoughts
I think this is pretty much exactly why it still ended up on the album despite being leaked. So I'm pretty hopeful and actually kinf of optomistic that we will get a video eventually, it just might be a while as she'll probably do actual album songs first. I'm sure it'll be amazing since she is so intent on it! -
So I really want to go to this but I have some questions as I've never been to Music Midtown. When is the best time to get there if I want to be at the front of her stage? Will they let me bring something in for her to sign? Do they have food/beverages for sale inside so I don't die waiting hours in front of her stage? Do you guys think she'll come down into the crowd during the show/stay after the show like she does at her own concerts? Sorry for all the questions!

Which songs off Ultraviolence deserve a music video the most?
Anthem replied to Venice Jesus Whore's topic in Lana Thoughts
I really want Brooklyn Baby because its such a great upbeat song and I think would have a cute video but at the same time I'm so darn curious about her idea for Black Beauty. She said in an interview like a year ago that she already had an idea for the video before the song was even leaked and I want to see it because it'll probably be amazing. -
I absolutely hated everything on Paradise except Ride for the first year and a half that it was out. Only very recently have I began to really appreciate all of the other songs, and now I would definitely say that Paradise is my favorite album/EP from Lana. Oddly enough, Cola, Gods and Monsters, and (especially) Body Electric were songs I absolutely hated but are now my favorite ones on there, while now I think Ride (which I previously loved) is overrated and cliche. I did and still do hate American though, haha. And I always prefer the AKA version of Yayo but its still an amazing song. I wish I had appreciated Paradise more when I saw her in concert because I would have enjoyed it more since she sang so much off of it. Some other ones: Raise Me Up Daytona Meth (and really any of the lower-quality songs) Hundred Dollar Bill (to be fair, I only just realized I had the demo the entire time and that the finished one existed) Shades of Cool Pretty When You Cry

He looks surprisingly clean in this picture. ( ) I'm looking forward to his new album! I love his voice and I think he has so much potential.

I think she annoyingly uses the word "crazy" enough to be of note. American - "You make me crazy, you make me wild" Back to the Basics - "Crazy and shameless in love" Backfire - "My man's crazy" Because of You - "But it can all get a little crazy" Body Electric - "We get crazy every Friday night" Cola - "Harvey's/Ah he's in the sky with diamonds and he's making me crazy" Cruel World - "I'm crazy", "You're fucking crazy/Crazy for me" Flipside - "I'm gonna have to say you're crazy" Gramma - "Don't cry honey, crazy girl" Is This Happiness - "I think you're fucking crazy as the day is long" Lucky Ones - "You're a careless con and you're a crazy liar" Million Dollar Man - "If you're going crazy, then grab me and take me" Noir - "Dangerous but I'm crazy" Off to the Races - "Because I'm crazy, baby" On Our Way - "You're making me crazy" Paradise - "Tie you up and make you crazy" Prom Song - "I'm not crazy" Ride - "I'm tired of feeling like I'm fucking crazy" Television Heaven - "Come on inside oh you crazy child look at you" West Coast - "He's crazy and cubano" Young and Beautiful - "Crazy days/city lights" I don't even know if that's close to all of them.
-
American ties with DP and Lolita for her worst released songs imo. It is just dumb lyrically and its the only song on Paradise that I just won't listen to (minus Yayo but that's only because I prefer the AKA version).

What would you change about Lana's albums/eras?
Anthem replied to GodBlessMe's topic in Lana Thoughts
Oh I forgot - I would add Hundred Dollar Bill to LDR AKA LG. I'm always surprised when I remember that its not on there - it definitely belongs in every way. -
Ooh I am West Coast and that was actually in my top 3 from UV. I think Flipside would be another good one for us.
-
Do any of you guys know the chords for this intro bit? I've looked around and can only find the ones for the actual intro in the album version of the song. I'm just barely not skilled enough to pick it out by ear.

"I wear my red lipstick, grab my coat and gun Wonder if this is it, it's darkest before dawn Sometimes I wanna give in but I just have to go on Miss American now I'm gone, baby, gone Used to talk about where we'd be and where we'd go Now we know, baby now we know" "What's happening? Where did we go? The Jersey shore was long ago" (She should have kept the "what's happening" in OM because it gives [at least for me] a different and more sad feeling) "There's nowhere on this earth that I'd rather be Than in your bedroom breathing heavily" "Jim raised me up He hurt me but it felt like true love Jim taught me that Loving him was never enough" (So heartbreaking) "Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind" "You should never come between a woman and her dream and a man who never knew his place" All of Born to Die, PSB, OTTR, VG, AFFA, etc. And finally (though I could be biased because this is my favorite lyric from my favorite song by my favorite artist) "Hello heaven, you are a tunnel lined with yellow lights on a dark night"

I watched it again and its not quite as bad as the first time. I like the way some of the clips fit into the music. I feel anxious during the second verse because I keep expecting something to happen and nothing does. One thing that really bothers me still is how out of place the video seems. All of the album teasers and the two videos we already had were very beachy-themed with palm trees, black and white images, old men, cigarettes, etc. I felt like the aesthetic theme with the album was very clear but this video kind of went against all that. I guess we can't just keep getting more of the same but unity is what was such a big improvement on this album versus previous eras so I don't know. I feel like I'm complaining too much. I really wanted to love this.
-
I'm pretty disappointed. :/ I kept watching to see if it would go anywhere and it never really did. I feel really underwhelmed. The best part was the end when she walks into the church thing since I guess it reveals that she was left or the man in question died or something along those lines so at least there was a snippet of story to it. The missed potential is killing me since this could have been so great. She WAS very pretty in it though so there's that.

Oh my god I finally found the full version of Television Heaven and its destroying me completely. The chorus is probably my favorite of Lana's ever - I love the lyrics and the production and how its different form the versus and ugh. I'll have this one on repeat for days. Why does Lana always happen when I'm trying to explore other artists. But damn if finds like this aren't the reason I love her so much.

Thank you x10000 to whomever said Mazzy Star! I am listening to them now and its like a void in my soul is being filled. I'm gonna check out the other suggestions when I get done being blown away.

I'm pretty excited for the video based on the clip. At times while reading the responses I wondered if we had even watched the same clip lol. I don't know, I just get this feeling that this is going to be amazing. Every time I feel unsure about something she's doing and I finally see the end product, she always manages to blow me away and make me wonder why I ever doubted her. So I'm trusting her on this one. And for anyone feeling odd about the quality, just remember the quality difference between the Shades of Cool teaser and the actual video! Also does this remind anyone of Marina's State of Dreaming video? First thing I thought when I saw it.
