I thought Bel Air went: "I don't want to leave but I won't cheat you no more". I like mine better. I thought the opening lines of Cruel World were "Let the light in/it's a cruel, cruel world".. but its not. maybe its a little too late for this joke/i'm still a bit bitter

To be honest, I think she could kill "When Doves Cry". If you just look at the lyrics without thinking of Prince/his production, I think she could slow it up/darken it up and it would be fantastic, maybe even adjust the lyrics (I don't think the mother/father lines would work with her). She never will though because I feel like she only covers artists that fit her image. "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparrow also sounds like something I think would be great, again toning the song down a lot. I don't know, I could see/want her to cover everything because I just love her voice.

I just don't understand why she just let the album go. She was so passionate about it before - I remember her saying it made her "forget the old record". There were billboards being put up and pictures and promos and teasers in April/May. Even if it flopped sales-wise, does she not still love UV for what it is and have that connection with the songs themselves? I'm hoping this is a label issue rather than her. I mean, I guess its only 4 months in so at this point in the BTD era we didn't even have NA or SS videos yet, so I guess she could come up with something still, but theres no real indication anything is in the works. Oh well, at least nothing is better than half-attempts which would just be even more disappointing. And she is starting to sing more UV live so that's something too.

From the point of view of someone who doesn't know much about musical genres, I would really love if you guys gave very specific examples of how Lana is/isn't "jazz" or even "jazz influenced". I'd like to see you guys say "(songnamehere) does (jazzthing) at (timejazzthinghappensinsong)" or "The lyrics ("lyricshere") are "jazz" because (whyitsfollowsajazztrend). I'm genuinely curious as to how she is jazz because I was in the crowd that kind of dismissed it as her imagination but I'm open to being proven wrong.

I really love in one of the TIWMUG demos when she starts singing "Baby oh baby oh baby oh" at the end over and over again. I don't know why but that always stuck out as one of my favorite music moments from her. Its actually interesting how the little details really affect whether or not I like a song. Just thinking about that little bit made me want to DL and listen to TIWMUG whereas I haven't listened to the album version in months, maybe even like a year.

I actually had to find the images myself and take them to a printing place and just have them do it on cardstock. It actually took weeks and some research on my part to learn about DPI, what files to save for printing, etc. I can send you the images I used for printing if you want. They are far from perfect (they are visibly of less quality than the ones that came with the set) but they are close enough to make me happy (especially SS). Make sure you choose a printing place that does good color too. Mine were perfect on the screen but when printed they are slightly lighter than they should be (except SS but especially BV). I did mine at my school's printing shop, then tried UPS, and now I'm considering an even more specialized printing place. They are pretty cheap too, I think for the 4 that I have in my set now I paid $4. Yeah I was super lucky to get it from someone here on LB. Finding it from someone else like that is probably your best bet because they are (for some reason) so expensive on like Amazon or something like that. Also don't try ordering one on fnac.com because I think they are permanently out of stock despite still having them on their webpage. I tried twice to buy one from there with no luck either time.

I have bought and sold some things from my collection so here is an update, with pictures this time because those are funner to look at: Born to Die/Paradise Era Ultraviolence Era Singles Not shown, I have Born to Die (Deluxe), Paradise, and UV all in jewel cases (they hang on my wall), the black 2014 American Tour shirt, a sleeveless shirt with Lana on it, and two posters. I just recently had my own prints made and added to my Paradise box set and I love them. They are the Summertime Sadness, Ride, Blue Velvet, and Born to Die (album) ones. I plan on doing it with my UV box set too and adding (hopefully) the West Coast single image if I can find it in a high enough quality. I'm taking a break from collecting as of right now but in the coming months my focus is going to be getting 7" vinyls and any new UV singles that come out in physical form.

Or that loving her was never enough? She makes so many references to American culture that I didn't get until I listened to her that I began to question my identity as a born and bred 'merican. I didn't know what: Skid Row Chateau Marmot Bugsy Malone (+ all the other names in LoD besides SS/Adrian and Bonnie/Clyde) Cosa Nostra Lolita (the book) Top Shelf Liquor Yayo Drugstore Cowboy PBR (I had a tame teenage life) That Americans were Young, Dope, and Proud Cherry Knots were, and a few more that I can't think of right now. I never realized how truly sheltered I was. I wish UV had as many references as the rest of her music, or do I just miss them?

I don't know where I read it but I always heard/believed it was definitely written by Lana but inspired by real letters Jackie wrote at various points in history (or maybe even one). It was always my favorite theory.

No other song even exists right now besides FROOT.

^ This was literally my face when I both read the lyrics yesterday and heard the song for the first time today. It was a LOT different from how the snippet led me to think the song would be, but its still so awesome! I only don't like the pre-chorus bit, I think the song would have been better without it, and she pronounces ready and rodeo weird but that chorus damnit is perfect.

You are amazing. Thanks!

I saw her in May in Atlanta and she just came back again to do a music festival a few weeks ago and 2 songs were replaced with UV ones and two songs were taken out completely but other than that the setlists were in the exact same order with the same songs. I'm suprised because she is actually even cutting back on the UV songs she's doing. She didn't do FMUTT, which she's been doing, and besides that one time, she hasn't done Old Money either. This album was supposedly recorded live so she should sound good and be confident in the songs so I don't know why she isn't doing more of them. I'm so ready for SOC, BrB, a full OM, and maybe Flipside or something to be done live.
-
Wow so I just realized I've had the demo and final version of this song mixed up the entire time. I have been DMD'd again. Why does she insist on making these ultra-chill songs into upbeat chaos when they were already perfect
-
You probably already know this, but its suspected that Old Money was actually intended for Gatsby. This theory is supported by a few facts: She said somewhere that she had wrote a song for Gatsby (likely OM) but when they heard Young and Beautiful they decided they wanted that song instead. In retrospect, they probably wanted Y&B because of the Romeo and Juliet theme similarities in OM. "Old money" is literally a term straight out of the novel, and an important one at that. Some of the lyrics are very similar to Y&B. "Will you still love me when I shine from words but not from beauty" is literally the same as "will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful/I've got nothing but my aching soul" Tbh, I think OM would have fit the movie more too. Oh and I've been meaning to add this to the thread: I actually like the Paradise cover. I know a lot of people find it unflattering but I love the colors on it. I find it kind of hilarious that she looks so bored in the picture. My love for the cover might be skewed by the love of the album though.

She is such a tease with her music.

Ultraviolence - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
Anthem replied to lflflflflflflflflflf's topic in Post-Release Threads
I just feel like UV as a whole has been so uninspired. Maybe its because I have a lot of the physical copies of things and I notice how more detailed BTD/P was than UV. She had her concepts down with BTD/P even to the packaging of the CDs (and it was impressive!), while UV is just a gray, flowered, "pretty" collection of random things. I guess being in love with Born to Die and Paradise thematically doesn't help my perspective, but I just don't see her overall theme or message or inspiration. Like someone else said, we are missing cool videos with storylines and promotion and just her involvement with the album in general. I'm skeptical if she really will do a huge tour next year. Overall I'd say I like BTD over UV, but I like Paradise and AKA more than both of them. -
Seriously double post..

I looked her up after a friend told me about her because she had the same name as the nickname my friend called me (Lana but intended to be pronounced different. Now I feel like an awkward poser when she calls me that even though I was called that first). I just looked her up and listened to the first thing that popped up, which in February of 2012 was the Born to Die video. Honestly, she was my favorite singer since then. I listened to nothing but her for the next five months. My next two songs were Blue Jeans and then Video Games. The Diet Mountain Dew demo was next and I thought that was the album version until almost a year later when I bought the physical copy. I didn't listen to National Anthem for a long time because I thought it was literally the national anthem. I think my first unreleased song was KOL. I had a CD in my car forever of BTD + Unreleased stuff but I didn't really keep up with what was on the album so it was all just jumbled together. I remember loving Never Let Me Go and On Our Way back then. I'd give anything to find that CD in working condition again.

When I have a child this will be the first thing they listen to, I swear.

You guys share your pictures! I'm soo disappointed that I couldn't come - I just didn't have the money for the ticket. But I did see her in May and I WILL see her when she comes back into the area again. Besides one or two songs I don't think her setlist was even really different than in May anyways and it still looked super short.
-
Yeah that's exactly what I think happened, especially if you go back to the direct quotes she gave in these articles: http://www.nme.com/news/lana-del-rey/72087 and http://www.nme.com/news/lana-del-rey/68937 "West Coast inspired" and "moved on to a more spiritual place lyrically" both sound like AFFA and Hollywood, and less like FMUTT/Cruel World/Sad Girl/almost everything on UV. I fully believe the album she is describing in these articles is not Ultraviolence the way we know it. I think West Coast (the demo), Brooklyn Baby, Old Money, ITH, and Black Beauty were the ones intended for the original album. When you put them in a playlist with AFFA/Hollywood/maybeJFKandStarryEyed, you kind of understand where she had been going originally and I think it would have been so beautiful.
-
I think the original pre-Dan was supposed to run along the lines of "Paradise 2", like someone else said. AFFA, Hollywood, Starry Eyed, JFK, etc all sounded like they could have been put on Paradise and those were the ones she was, before the leak, intended to put on the album. Not to mention she described the album as "spiritual" early in 2013 which is far from what the UV we have now is. I think songs like PWYC, MPG, and Sad girl would have been outtakes or maybe added on as bonus tracks and ITH/Black Beauty would be actual album tracks. I really wish that the "first UV" album would have come into existence because it was just the kind of music I really needed, but oh well, it didn't, and I'm constantly angry about it but oh well . (aside: I think the snippets of Marina's new album sound like a Marina version of Paradise and I'm so damn excited) The UV we know today could have come afterwards and I'd have been happy having both. The only thing is that I consider the threshold where "old UV" and "new UV" to have come when AFFA, JFK, BB, etc were leaked. I think it was at this moment she changed the direction of the album rather than when she met Dan. When she said she "re-worked" it I just assume that meant production because I don't think Lana would want someone to completely change the direction/mood/tracks of her work. Or maybe she just got inspired by the new sounds, I don't know.
