There are some of her most lauded albums critically, so I wouldn't call them a WTF moment. Personally, I loathe BB, but Chemtrails had some really inspired moments (White Dress, Chemtrails, Wild at Heart, Not all those who wonder, Dance till we die (that bridge!), as well as some uninspired ones (Let me Love you, Breaking up Slowly). It's biggest shortcoming its length. If say Margaret was on it in the second half, it would have been a really solid folk record.

i've been hesitant to come in here because i just knew it'd be full of people bashing everything about her recent output, nothing's new, nothing's changed :bye:

In the defense of the thread here, it's not meant to be a Lana bashing party. I'm genuinely confused as to why she never did a Summer Bummer video (i think it woulda been massive), and was just wondering what are some other wtf moments like that for people here. Never meant to be trashy (but yeah it's turning into that lmao)

i know that drugs are unhealthy but as a wtf moment i consider the most shocking moment, singers and other celebs doing drugs are nothing shocking for me. but i understand what you meant

Considering she's a recovering alcoholic, and considering how many celebrities have substance abuse issues and even die of drug related complications, I think lanita is doing really well. She's never made a scandal on drugs for example. (although for all we know she might have been high when she wrote her "question for the culture" post)

Either way, i don't blame her for getting an occasional hit of coke or whatever she's into

Oh please. That song is Lana on autopilot. It's more of a background noise than a song. Repetitive and boring.

    thank you!

If there's anything I learned on this board it's that all lana needs to do is walk to a piano, sing a few random lines, and some folks will still call it the second coming of Christ.

I mean, I don't blame her, get that bread lana. But people really need to learn the difference between slaying it and winging it.

I think it tracks. Lana not caring about what other people think of her and stop trying to do what’s expected of her has always been on brand. The fandom’s fixation with those covers is confounding. Most musicians she stans don’t care about shit like that.

Well,it's because she set the bar really high for herself as soon as she hit the scene with the Born to Die cover - one of the hottest and most memorable covers ever.

So you like Paradise cover better than Ocean Blvd.? :hdu:

The Paradise cover was glam and sexy. Very Americana, and old Hollywood. Which is what sold Lana in the first place.

I agree with the OP on those first two covers being untouchable as far as Lana's covers go. Lust for Life came close and OB isn't bad per se (I don't like anything BB so I'm too subjective to speak on that), but Chemtrails, NFR, Honeymoon definitely needed rethinking. Chemtrails just looks like a pic taken with an iphone. Not cool.

And let's not forget the single covers for BB. That was just a whole other level of lazy. An almost unprecedented level of lazy in the music industry.

    Okay lemme start:

    - Starting to lose any motivation to create stunning visuals for her singles when her label refused to release the OG Ultraviolence video.

    - Letting the label cockblock the release of Cola and not offering to record a clean version (and then not including it in TROPICO)

    - The atrocious direction of her cover art immediately after the Paradise era up until today.

    - Performing unreleased songs over the majority of UV songs during the Endless Summer Tour.

    - Recycling the UV video footage a million times for the HM videos.

    - Replacing BAR with Change, releasing the BAR video with White Mustank audio and changing the album title to one of the lamest songs on the album.

    - Chemtrails and Blue Banisters existing. Putting YouTube rips of unreleased songs on the latter.

    - Not releasing videos for Cola, Brooklyn Baby, Black Beauty, Cherry, 13 Beaches, Get Free, Mariners, Venice Bitch & A&W

    - Never performing Bel Air, Art Deco, Religion, The Blackest Day, Swan Song, Heroin, Fuck It I Love You, The Greatest, Happiness Is A Butterfly, White Dress, Thunder, Peppers, Fishtail & Taco Truck live.

agree on the cover art actually. Born to Die and paradise were on a whole other level from anything that came afterwards.

what'a the story about the og uv video? No idea what you're talkin' about

Let’s just say that our girl isn’t the best to choose songs that could be singles :true: Dealer not being a single with MV is a bit more comprehensible: I don’t think she thought it would be the biggest success of BB and once an “era” is well underway, she is already recording for the next album, so little time to film MVs.
bur Cherry, Summer Bummer, Cinnamon Girl, Peppers: they could all have been singles with MVs with radioplay even :oprah2:

amen. Her taste in choosing singles died at the start of the new decade

Don’t kill me - but do we think there’s going to be a strong country influence on this next album? Some signs point to it -

    1. Covering Stand By Your Man at the recent shows. She covered For Free on the NFR tour and it was on the following album. Perhaps a studio version exists and will be on the next album?

    2. An Instagram story from September 2022 captioned “I hope you guys like country music”. At that point, most of DYKTTATUOB was finished, with Margaret (the last song recorded) written and recorded that month. Perhaps she started work on the following record already?

    3. Her recent studio session in Alabama, which, as a southern state, has a lot of overlap with a more “Americana” country sound.

Well, if that's the case, I hope it's not all old school country throughout. We need at least one song with a modern twist like Old Town Road by Lil Nas X. I mean, it's 2023 and things have evolved from thhe Brokeback Mountain era sonically. Leave old school country to Keith Urban.

But does anyone else here want Lana to go back to beats and drums? Like full-blown Born to Die hip-hop shit? Like if you agree.

Personally, I'm dying for it! DYING. Not since Doin' Time and Don't Call me Angel (both in the last decade) did we get a straight-up bop. Been listening to the Say Yes to Heaven remixes all day long. Her voice fits the retro vibe so well, and kudos to her for always finding the right classic context, but it can also sound very modern and sexy (the voice of a generation), and she's just not giving it the contemporary space it deserves. It's just a shame that her output is 80% classic (the greatest, OB, White Dress, the Grants, Say Yes to Heaven, Margaret, Mariner's, NFR, etc etc. etc.), and 20% contemporary (Summertime Sadness, Summer Bummer, Off to the Races, National Anthem, HIgh by the Beach, Doin' Time). I wish it were at least 70-30. And it's all down to production and tempo. Because a lot of her songs could be produced as contemporary pop easily.

bartender was always a weird choice to play in concerts. But did you see how everyone sings all of the lyrics? People love the song (mysef included, obvs)

This should have stayed in the drafts 😭 it wasn’t well articulated

yeah, it just seems like she was butthurt that she doesn't have a number 1 and has blamed these artists for that somehow.

when the fact is, she could have topped the chart if she had continued down the path of BTD's big productions and beats, aka played the game a bit.

…what was even more WTF about this post is how exaggerated people’s reactions were to this, calling Lana racist or saying she ruined her career like LOL

To be fair though, she seems to have learned her lesson and never done anything similar again. If she hadn't slipped then, who knows, she coulda said sth. even worse and got cancelled for real.

Freak was actually a fan favorite when honeymoon was released so I would say that wasn't wrong

You're probably right. But, let's face it, that single did nothing to further her career, she never plays it, and no one ever uses it anywhere (movies, TikTok, socials). It was only a single because it was the most upbeat (even though Art Deco had a much catchier melody and has stood the test of time).

    Chemtrails video>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I like Chemtrails. But I always found it a bit too low budget and not on par with Shades of Cool, Born to Die and even CN now. The video I have in mind for Wild at Heart is a lot bigger. Think Ride but with photographers (due to the lyrics), a Hollywood star escaping to the mid-West and living on a porch with a hot model, being found again, etc. It's just a bigger production.

LDR10 needs to be Psychedelic, i dont care if its psychedelic pop or rock or electronic or experimental. LANA NEEDS TO BE A PSYCHEDELIC ENTITY :oprah3:I need a Lana record to do drugs to.

I mean, anything but another album stacked with piano ballads. Anything literally. I'd take a trash EDM Lana record over piano. Bues, reggae, heavy metal, dubstep, k-pop, bring anything. other. than. piano. ballads. ffs. lana. please.

OMG YESSS! I FORGOT THAT ONE. One of my all-time fav lyrics. Heartbreaking, and the level of specific detail in that number of syllables. Genius.

You, sir/mam,  have exquisite taste  :)

  17. Like, wrong decisons, stuff she's said, wrong choices?

    I'll start:

    1. Not making a hot video with ASAP Rocky for Summer Bummer or even double video with Groupie Love. Instead, we get a White Mustang video? WTF!

    2. Not releasing Wild at Heart as the first single off Chemtrails with a high-budget video ala Ride, featuring porches, driving around the mid-West, hot boys, and that sweet, sweet Americana. WTF

    3. Releasing Freak as a single and making a video for it. Huh? What. Who asked for it? Art Deco would have been a much more logical choice. Or, even better, Hollywood, had she put it on the record like she should have (another WTF)

    4. Releasing Let Me Love You Like a Woman as the first single. LOL. What was she thinking? And that video......

    5. Adding a shit ton of reverb to her vocals on the gorgeous Tomorrow Never Came and practically ruining the song with it

    6. The shit, 90s style video for White Dress. That song deserved so much better

    7. Text Book as the opening track on BB. Blue Banisters would have been so much better, and followed her 1-2-1-2 pattern.

Those are the top ones for me. My biggest pet peeves. What are yours?

Love the Wild at Heart love! So underrated. Great lyrics, great melody, great production, great song. I always say shoulda been the first single with a big-budget Ride style video on a ranch and Lana driving around. That first, Chemtrails second, White Dress third, and scrap Let me love you as a single.
