do we know what months the Sad Girl leaked demo, Ultraviolence leaked demo, and Fuck My Way were recorded?

I'm not sure but I would think they date around the November 2013 sessions? kinda remember reading about it but not quite sure tbh

The Ultraviolence demo is from 2013, produced by Dan Heath - unsure about the exact month, but I think it was confirmed upon its leak that it was mid-late 2013.

I always thought the Sad Girl and Fuck My Way demos were rough mixes by Dan Auerbach from January 2014, but someone please correct me if I’m wrong. They sound like rougher versions of the final versions so I don’t know that the production on them was done during the original 2013 sessions.

The vocals on Sad Girl are the same from the November 2013 sessions with Rick, since he has producing credits for the vocals. I assume it was the same for the vocals on Fuck My Way, since Dan Heath co-wrote it with her likely around the time they did Ultraviolence (and they kept most of the 2013 vocal take for the final version of Ultraviolence).

okay, so this is a comprehensive list of every song from the UV era that we know of (not including Dark City and Ave Maria because we don’t rlly know anything about them, also not including Queen of Hearts and Don’t Stop because I have a feeling they were for something else) and when they were recorded as specifically as we know. if i’m missing info or possibly forgot to add a few songs to this list, which is definitely likely, lmk and i will update

  1. Cruel World — demo possibly recorded at Electric Lady December 2013-January 2014, final version recorded January-February 2014
  2. Ultraviolence — demo/most vox possibly recorded November 2013, final version re-worked by Dan Auerbach January-February 2014 with a few new vocal takes
  3. Shades of Cool — scratch demo and Rick Nowels version recorded November 2013, final version recorded January-February 2014
  4. Brooklyn Baby — there’s a scratch demo out there (which we have a snippet of), possibly from late 2013, final version recorded January-February 2014
  5. West Coast — demo/radio mix possibly recorded April 2013, final version recorded January-February 2014
  6. Sad Girl — demo/vox possibly recorded November 2013, instrumental reworked by Dan Auerbach January-February 2014
  7. Pretty When You Cry — recorded December 2013-January 2014
  8. Money Power Glory — recorded October-December 2012, alternate version recorded with Auerbach January-February 2014
  9. Fucked My Way Up to the Top — demo possibly recorded mid-late 2013, final version recorded with Auerbach January-February 2014
  10. Old Money — recorded October-December 2012
  11. The Other Woman — recorded January-February 2014
  12. Black Beauty — demo recorded January 2013, Paul Epworth rework possibly from February 2014
  13. Guns and Roses — recorded December 2013-January 2014
  14. Florida Kilos — recorded January-February 2014
  15. Is This Happiness? — recorded November 2013
  16. Flipside — possibly recorded June 2013
  17. Living Legend — recorded 2013, likely July 2013
  18. Cherry Blossom — recorded early May 2013
  19. Nectar of the Gods — recorded early May 2013
  20. Fine China — demo recorded November 2013, re-recorded with Auerbach in January-February 2014
  21. Yes to Heaven — demo recorded November 2013, re-recorded with Auerbach in January-February 2014
  22. Let Me Love You Like a Woman (Demo) — ?
  23. If You Lie Down with Me (Demo) — ?
  24. Angels Forever, Forever Angels — recorded early 2013
  25. I Talk to Jesus — demos recorded October-December 2012, re-recorded with Auerbach January-February 2014
  26. Your Girl — recorded November 2013
  27. Unidentified Flying Bill — possibly recorded June 2013
  28. I Don’t Wanna Go (Lake Placid) — demo recorded Early-Mid 2012, re-recorded in 2013
  29. Hollywood — recorded September-December 2012, alt version from 2013
  30. Wild One (Mike) — recorded September-December 2012
  31. Cult Leader — recorded early-mid 2013
  32. Dragonslayer — recorded early-mid 2013
  33. I Can Fly — demo recorded November 2013

*One understandable misconception that I saw about the final version of West Coast is that it was recorded at The Bridge because that is listed in the album’s linear notes, but only select instruments on the song were recorded at The Bridge. The final version vox were recorded at Easy Eye.

Amazingggg! I think for Guns and Roses, even though we know Blake and Lee Foster worked on it at Electric Lady Studios in December 2013/January 2014, it is possible they kept the vocals from an earlier session (especially since they did that for several other songs on UV). I’d speculate that maybe some vocals (if recorded) from the January 27, 2013 session—where we can see G&R lyrics on her notepad—were kept in the final version.

Edit: We also know that Hollywood was recorded by summer 2012 along with several other outtakes and tracks that ended up on Paradise, but the production was revamped in 2013.

i think she made fuck my way up to the top with dan only? isnt the leaked demo by him also?

i have no idea, but there’s a really weird glitch on Spotify and Tidal that says Emile Haynie and Dan Heath produced FMWUTTT. that’s not printed on the official linear notes, but I’m wondering if possibly the demo credits were uploaded or something? considering Dan Heath wrote it with her. So I kinda think Dan Heath and Emile produced the demo

these are the credits for FMWUTTT on streaming. everything else for the album is correct so it’s kind of odd, they have to have come from somewhere so I’m assuming they accidentally came from the demo or something

imagine if they accidentally released the demo version and it was too late to change the liner notes of the physical copies :oopna2:

when there’s an actual Dan Auerbach version of FMWUTTT sitting on a hard drive somewhere unreleased and unbeknownst to us… i always thought FMWUTTT sounded quite different than the other songs Dan A did on that album, but then again so does his MPG version

I see Cruel World listed as late 2013? I thought that and Pretty When You Cry were both created with Dan (no previous demo?), so wouldn't it be early 2014?

Also, wasn't Beautiful People (demo) from the Ultraviolence era?

Pretty When You Cry was recorded right before Lana met Dan, during the Electric Lady session! It’s produced by Blake and Lee Foster. Lana talked about how Cruel World was written on the last day of that session at Electric Lady, so it’s possible that there’s a recording of that song from that session too although that part is just my own speculation. Presumably the only song Lana didn’t already have before she met Dan was Florida Kilos

Lana and Blake did Cruel World and Pretty When You Cry first at Electric Lady Studios in December 2013, and then Dan Auerbach revamped Cruel World in January 2014! PWYC as it is on Ultraviolence is still the one with Blake.

The first Beautiful People demo was recorded on July 30, 2014, so post-Ultraviolence.

It was recorded in 2014 for the Big Eyes soundtrack after Ultraviolence, and then repurposed for Honeymoon, when it was scrapped and reworked again for Lust for Life.

I just checked the linear notes for Guns and Roses, and it looks like the only studio the final version was recorded at is Electric Lady, and the January 27th 2013 session was in Santa Monica ! so there must be a completely different version of Guns and Roses out there

Omg. Adding Guns and Roses (Early 2013 Demo) to the list of unheard songs I need to hear. Thank you for all your work to compile this timeline of UV era songs btw! <3
