The Physical Media Thread

Recommended Posts

Do you buy physical media in any way? This could relate to video games, movies, cds, vinyl, books, etc.

Personally I've been collecting physical Switch and PS5 games and some movies I think are classics and should be bought physically so it can't be pulled from streaming or anything. I also collect some books and vinyl that I think are top tier albums I need to have and top tier books I think are special to me. One day, I see myself having a media library room in my house with bookshelves of horror/thriller and animation, books, and games that are nostalgic or special in certain ways.

I LOVE physical media, mainly cause even if you buy something online you don’t really own it but they just give you a license to use the thing… + I hate subscriptions.
I love collecting vinyl records, I used to do the same with CDs but now I just collect the ones from artists I love the most. I play on PC and Switch and I did buy all of my games on physical format until 10 years ago I think, but since nowadays they just give you a code and there’s no booklet either I don’t really see the point of keeping these empty plastic shells :(

I journal, scrapbook and I recently started shooting in film, I’m thinking about printing my pictures and make some photobooks to keep forever :flutter:

I have a kindle, but I still have a big physical book collection. I also collect CDs! I managed to find an old cd player too, so that's fun. I just like the feeling that even if someone wipes it from the internet, I'd still have access to it lol. I want to get back to collecting DVDs too, I hate that we depend too much on streaming services and a lot of movies and shows are nowhere to be found on them.

i have a problem because i have over 700 movies and i started running out of space in my room a long time ago but i keep getting them :adele: a big chunk of those are from when i got a huge bin full of dvd binders from an estate sale for like ten bucks and its mostly obscure 2000s horror movies. so much that i think they must have had some sort of subscription cause wtf is Dan T. Hall's Ghost Stories Quadrilogy :air: but the original ringu series was in there so im happy

i had a... moment... a few days ago and impulsively ended my spotify subscription and deleted my spotify account :toofunny: so i've just been going rogue and listening to music on youtube, but i'm also working on a google doc where i document all of the music i like, just to keep a record of it, i may want to get into buying CDs, since i honestly like the idea of owning the music i like rather than renting it, and when you have your own music files, you can edit the metadata of your songs however you see fit, although i'm aware that still costs money, but maybe one day i'll find something i like at the thrift store for cheap

i also want to one day get into making mixtapes, making CDs of fan-made albums out of unreleased songs and such, and making my own CDs of albums like AKA

also, physical books > digital/audiobooks in a heartbeat, the real thing cannot be beat

Is there anyone who still listens to cassettes? Before the year 2000, I used to record the music I liked from the radio onto cassette and built up a small collection. Later came mini-discs, but unfortunately my player no longer works.

a few years ago i was really into it, as i expanded my music taste i found it hard to keep up with getting things on cassette so ended up gravitating towards cds and vinyl, i think they’re soooo cool though

I have like 20 cassettes. They aren’t as convenient as CD or Vinyl in my experience, having to be rewind back like a VHS and the cases tend to very easily break

I like buying video games in physical copies rather than digitally as well! I only have a few physical on my switch, but I still have some old ones from my DS and gameboy advanced (obviously digital didn't exist back then though). the past year I started collecting vinyl and it's been fun! I love looking at the artwork inside and having a copy for myself is just fun. My dad was really big into collecting CDs when I was growing up, but I've been thinking of starting a collection as well. they're a lot cheaper & easier to take care/store compared to vinyl.

you should!! when I was in high school, my first car was pretty old so it didn't have bluetooth. I made a few of my own CD mixtapes idk where they went but it was a lot of Tumblr era songs. I remember I had some lana and her unreleased on there:oprah: I need to find them. they're nice to have though, I made a couple for my friends back then too <3 you should deff try it out! :)

To store CDs and DVDs, i have this thing

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KW0B7Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It spins and holds about 1,000 CDs, or 250 per side (not sure how many DVDs/Blue rays it could hold, maybe around 500-600 since their taller and take up more space). It isn’t the highest quality thing ever but it works nice and is convenient for space. You may have to enter your Bob the Builder era to put it together though.
