US TikTok ban

TikTok officially shut down in the US almost two hours earlier than expected, affecting its 170 million American users. Other ByteDance apps, like CapCut and Lemon8, are also banned. For years, US officials have cited national security concerns over the app. On January 17th, the Supreme Court ruled the ban did not violate free speech, citing TikTok's Chinese ownership. Trump may grant a 90-day extension after taking office.

 

When opening the app, the following message pops up:

"Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now.

A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now.

We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"

just realized Friday was also 8 years since vine shutdown on January 17th 2017  vine was shut down for financial reasons so it's not tied to anything government, but each time trump comes into office, we lose a short form video platform

I feel so horrible for non-US content creators who heavily rely on a US audience/clientele to sustain their businesses. It seems so silly to lament the end of an app but a lot of people's livelihoods will be affected by this

No loss for the culture, but the reasons for the ban are weird. A lot of hardware comes from China, which should raise similar security concerns.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Tiktok is a successful competitor to other US social media platforms.

I think it’s interesting everyone is saying Trump is a savior for wanting to save this app, but first off, isn’t he to blame for why the app was banned in the first place? Also don’t forget: Just because he wants to save this app, doesn’t mean we should forget he wants to strip away rights from people who aren’t white, straight Christian men.

I've never used tik tok in my life but i feel bad because for a lot of people it was how they made a living so i hope it comes back for that reason

i legally cannot sell my computer (rtx 4090) to china, if i try to export it out of the country i could be arrested. the u.s. has such a fixation on china and makes stupid stunt bans like these to act like they're doing something about the non-issue they've created

 I think it’s an incredible cultural loss? TikTok helped shape music especially within the past couple years. Brat summer, Chappell Roan, even Doechii had her breakthrough recently due to the help of TikTok. I’m not saying these artists couldn’t have been successful without it but the platform completely propelled their success. When was the last time instagram created a viral meme? What about Facebook? I will literally have conversations about TikTok with my coworkers in the same way people in the 90’s would have conversations about the shows they saw the previous night (“water cooler talk”). Not to mention the fact that so many Americans rely on the income stream. I would say it’s a pretty phenomenal loss.

You guys I’m really really enjoying Rednote. It only took the algorithm less than 30 minutes to figure me out. I’m seeing a lot of my previous American TikTok creators + new Chinese creators who I like. The user interface is nearly identical. I’m content with this so far
