Granted, the low-key percussion shuffle and minimal production suggests this song was in its demo stages at the time of its leak, but that doesn't matter to me. This is the only unreleased song on my list, but who knows if I'll get the chance to name it's fully-produced version the song of the year in 2014? Who knows if "Black Beauty" will even mean as much to me in 2014 as it did in 2013? Naturally, I kind of wish I weren't able to list this song as a favorite quite yet because the leak really hurt Lana.

 

At the same time, I'm convinced that I'm better off for hearing this song. I've named it the Best Ballad of this year, most logically because it placed higher than any other ballads, but it's such a lyrical step forward for Lana Del Rey that it would be criminal not to give credit where it's due. "Black Beauty" contains some of her best and most effortless lyrics yet, my favorite being, "I paint the sky black / You said if you could have your way, you’d make it nighttime all the day / So it’d suit the mood of your soul." Her voice brims with the emotion somewhat lacking in some of her latest releases, like "Young & Beautiful" and "Gods & Monsters". Yet this song isn't such a departure that I'm not left deeply feeling all the reasons I'm so committed to my love for this woman who doesn't know my name.

 

There's the same candor and honestly in her lyrics mixed with a characteristic commitment to imagery and concept, her voice is as captivating and crushing as ever, and there's a real sense of atmosphere taking place. Her talent for expression at all costs is at its most clear in quite a while. Ultimately, this song isn't number one because Lana is my favorite artist--Lana is my favorite artist because she delivers such worthy songs as this one. Brush your hair to this.
