She probably does and they have the power to put pressure on her, but at the end of the day, if Lana doesn't want to do it, she's not going to. She seems like the type who would rather be penalized by her label than do something she doesn't want to do.

We heard that there was a lot of conflict between Lana and Interscope during UV and I feel like Interscope has given up on her in terms of promotion and trying to be commercially friendly. I'm starting to think this really will be her last album with them.

Yeah, seems that way. She's such a different artist now to the one I, and most others, first encountered on BTD.

If we're honest, there's nothing commercially appealing on UV or HM, when compared to the kind of music that sells big. But it's like she occupies this really unusual, almost unique middle ground. Good name recognition, infamy even, that most would attempt to spin into something bigger. I increasingly admire her no-fucks-to-give attitude, even if at times it's frustrating for us! Like others mentioned, there doesn't really appear to be a strategy, at least not a typical or cohesive one you'd expect from someone of her level.

I'm so curious to see what her next move is.

I think the interesting thing is, has she yet released anything under LDR you would consider awful? That's the real measure of a musical artist, they're only as good as their worst output.

For sure. I mean the amount of dedicated fans who were willing to camp out for her M&G for 24 hours in NYC proved that to me. Kendall had her M&G at Macy's the day before Lana had hers, and on the day Kendall's event was taking place, Macy's was tweeting that there were still tickets available. Compare that to Lana's event where Urban had to tweet the day BEFORE it took place that the line was already full. And both events had the same 125 limit. It just showed me that Lana can draw crowds just as well and even better than some of these celebs that are constantly in the news. I don't think you would've seen the same line for other alternative celebs like Marina (who I also like).

And she's still selling as well as a lot of these popular celebs. The HM sales are a little disappointing after UV's numbers, but you can bet that Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato will do similar numbers, and they've both been getting heavy rotation on the radio and doing performances on big award shows and doing TV appearances. Meanwhile Lana can just chill and perform just as well.

It's funny, I was thinking about this exact question earlier. The truth is, it's really difficult to be objective about Lana, y'know? There are songs I'm less in love with and play less (Guns & Roses, Once Upon A Dream...) but pretty much everything she releases has this layer of 'Lana-ness' over it that separates it from normal evaluation.

God, does that even make sense?

Her official discography under LDR is actually really impressive, quality-wise...but I'm completely biased because I'm so fucking enchanted with her she could fart in a bag and I'd be swooning  :flutter:

That's amazing! Maybe it's the intensity she inspires in her fans - there may be less of us, but we are kind of crazy-smitten lol. And you're right about Marina, whom I also like, but as good as she is I wonder if she commands the kind of ferocious, frenzied reaction from fans.

(the meaner side of me thinks 'why would anyone line up to meet a Kardashian/Jenner?' but I won't go on)

Maybe it comes down, in a large part, to Lana's mystique? You can't fake or buy that thing that she has. Do you agree?

Any guesses about the next video? I think either Freak or Art Deco.

I'm placing my bets on Freak. I think it could be a 2 song music video because I'd be really angry if Freak/Art Deco were music videos without the other as they flow into each other so seamlessly

Every song released both as LDR and any other name, and the demo's too.

There is no filler. No bad song. No song that doesn't fit in each album. (and the bonus songs too, however, they didn't always fit the subject matter which is why they were bonus songs)

100% and I can't say I ever heard anyone else come close to half of that.

Most artists have 2 or 3 songs, and the rest is filler. (20 or 30% only

And not putting other artists down, but as examples-

Christina Perri- after she finally made it in 2010-11, I loved her big single, Jar of hearts (however, gonna catch a cold is a bad lyric there, maybe the flu or pneumonia made more sense), and then a few other songs.

But in a way it was like Joan Osborne (Joan's "If god was one of us" was an amazing song, however, the other songs on the album had nothing to do in style or anything with that one, that proved If God

was an outlier and not what she was. Unfortunately, I myself did not relate to the the other songs.

Same with Sarah McLaughlan and Fiona Apple and others. A handful of songs, played in rotation with other artists. (Many of the Lilith artists the same, one great song, some others good).

Same with those mega single artists like Mariah, (who literally slept with the head of Columbia to get hits and those hits stopped when he divorced her), Celine, Whitney- the numbers sold went down

as time went on, and the quality went down.

The artistic output I have never seen in volume and consistency.

.and may I say again, millions of other artists would die to have their lifetime sales be as many as Honeymoon's first week sales. So would everyone who hit #3 to infinity down the chart. They would have died for a #2 placement.

Lana at Urban O. taking time to chat with each of the 125 insures that decades from now, those people will remember and will buy the latest album, see the latest tour, and keep telling their friends

(and their kids or grandkids and their friends ) and that is how to do it. Makes one their own PR person.

as for her record company- her deal allows her outside projects, they take her for what she is, and she is a core artist that record companies like to brag having on their label.

Every sale is going to someone who actively purchased it and wanted it.

It is not like in the 1980s,1990s, artists shipped a million albums and six months later the stores returned 950,000 of them. (back then shipped got one gold record, now it takes actual sales).

and Lana doesn't need money. That makes her free not to need to attain it.

And Lana's record deal allows her outside projects so we the supporters get more music from her. Another label might not have let her do the movie scores as they came up.

Or the duets.

I can't wait until next year and the year after and the year after that. Just when one thinks she cannot release something as good, the next song comes out and it is.

And I don't care if a negative person does not agree with me.(those people can put me on ignore if they choose).

Lana is our modern day Edith Piaf. Totally unique. a mixture of Brian WIlson Roy Orbison, Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, Elton & Bernie. Born to Die/Paradise is comparable to Elton's Captain Fantastic. All the records need to be listened whole. Waiting for a box set vinyl of all 400 songs not on any lp

I've thought about that for a while, and I haven't found anyone who is somewhat similar to Lana. At first, she striked me as the typical Tumblr singer, whose fans were hipster-ish 14 year old girls with suicide tendencies.

Perhaps a major factor into Why isn't she selling that much? is the sheer fact that she's difficult to understand, and when compared to the likes of Tay Tay or Demi you get an odd equation. She's VERY different, and I've told every single one of my friends to at least give her a try and they've all told me she's boring and plain. To sum it all up, biggest thing I've learned from Lana herself is that you need patience, and many people seem to disown her work just because of not posessing any kind of patience.

Just my thoughts.

Why do you think we are getting more videos at all?

I thought the era is over now that we have MTWBT. We'll get a tour with like, 6 HM songs and that's it.

in all honesty i think musicians are slowly starting not to care about the sales aspect of the industry and focus on the actual music! i don't blame them. i mean that's the way it should be. why do fans care so much? Lana genuinely cares about music...and release pretty often in comparison to a lot of artist.

:legend: finally some sense in this thread

I hope it's not over but she said that she is more inspired now

if she does do another video I hope it's not freak I find that song so overrated

The only other options I see are Honeymoon (which would be the VHS footage) or Terrence Loves You (which is something I highly doubt would turn out interesting).

The Blackest Day would be great, since you could really develop a plot around this song, but I doubt we'll have a video for it. Salvatore would make a great video with a lot of summery imagery and Freak ... well, she could use the cult-footage for it and make it fit MTWBT.

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!
