This thread aged so fast, tbh.

Haven't you read the last few pages on this thread? Lana is dropping a brand new album with a certain season as it's theme within the next 20 days. It will have Marina, Father John Misty & Jack Antonoff collabs. It will have experimental psychedelic music & she is hiring Anthony Mandler to direct a short film for the title track - 'Girl With Kaleidoscopic Eyes', produced by Emile Haynie & Dan Heath. Tim Larcombe described it as her magnum opus.

I think it's a tenuous thing to diagnose a person from afar, but I think Lana definitely has some problems that are coming across in this interview. I've had a lifelong problem with depression and various chemical substances, but I can only imagine being barely recovered and then having this barrage of hate and scrutiny directed at you. It would be enough to change anyone for the worse. Personally I'm not offended by her mood, seeing as I have social anxiety myself and can come across as angry and awkward and aloof, but rather by what she's saying--essentially ignorant elitism and just pure bullshit.

My main point is, I feel like if you have a degree in something, you should be able to talk about it. If she spent four whole years studying philosophy, I feel like she should be able to better articulate its ideas and seem aware/passionate/interested in questions regarding it. Her quotes about religion/philosophy seem underdeveloped at best and immature and misunderstanding at worst. She seems to fumble in talking about the topics  that supposedly influenced her growing up and music so much--nihilism, hedonism, free will, spirituality, fate--which should be very intimate and familiar to her. Remember that cringe-worthy interview where she defined metaphysics as "mathematically proving the reality of god"?? Maybe she was too high on ~methamphetamines~ through college to pay attention to the thing she was majoring in.

It's certainly a difficult thing to reconcile the stupidly hateful Lana in recent interviews with the Lana who kisses her crying fans and the Lana who wrote the sheer brilliance that is "You and Me." I suppose that's the real topic of philosophy here: human nature, having so many facets and quirks and flaws and rapid changes. Lana's only human--but a different person to everyone she meets, apparently.

    Not really

But the point I was trying to make is that if she is an INFP, then she views the world internally and like another poster said, through a filter. It's all about how she "feels" right then at that moment and that's where her answers come from. Throw in someone she doesn't get a good "vibe" off of and you have the recipe for a disaster interview. A lot of non-INFP people see that as being flaky or that she can't keep her stories straight. She's very hyperbolic as well so I think that doesn't help her cause either.

THIS ENTIRE INTERVIEW IS THE EPITOME OF INSECURITY AND DEFENSIVENESS AND VICTIM-PLAYING.

I am not from US so I am neither democratic or republican. Lana is a person like you and me why cant she have opinions? Talking about health care is normal for artists in europe and south america tbh. Talk about politics is normal. Why not be allowed to make constructive critics? Its so funny how in US the country that calls themselves the land of freedom no one can say what they think without being criticized for it. Not really for the opinions they have but for the fact that they expressed them. Kind of Ironic don't you think?

i agree; she shouldn't have to answer personal or grating questions. some of these questions in particular aren't even just grating -- they seem really transparent. like, "do you have opinions on healthcare reform, or . . .?" to me, that question in itself is out of scope, irrelevant, and judgmental / condescending in undertone (especially when paired with those fucking ellipses). this is an artist interview in 'electronic beats' magazine, not some 20-something cocktail party or a med school interview in the caribbean. like, to me, it seems as if she's trying to gauge her intelligence and/or expose her ignorance. can you imagine the interviewer asking florence welch that same exact question? kanye? beyonce? pretty much anyone else? i don't think so. but i also think i might be a tad bit cynical ...

lana probably doesn't know shit about politics. but she doesn't want or deserve to have that fact exposed to the world. it kind of seems like that question was a calculated one. there was no smooth or necessary segue between american imagery ---> obama ---> healthcare

i think this is basically how the interview went now that i've had time to overlanalyze the absolute shit out of it --

    interviewer:

    lana:

I just took a mbti test in my OB class the other day, and I am also INFP. Funnily enough, I didn't even realise she was coming off as arrogant or dismissive in the interview until I read everyone's opinions here. I just thought it sounded like Lana being Lana.

I guess I can relate because my opinion also changes from one day to the next depending on how I feel and if I like the person I'm talking too (yes that includes getting vibes off people, I'm an aquarius lol). I speak to over 200 people a day on a one-to-one basis and I conduct myself based on how they make me feel when I interact with them. I never put on a false front anymore; it's far too exhausting with that many people.

A lot of people think I'm a bitch or flaky as shit but that's just how I am. My boyfriend says I'm an odd duck...

even though i'm quoting your post this isn't necessarily a response to it. the (common) perception of her being 'fake' and a 'liar' just got me thinking. i mean, i get why people think these things. and she is a liar. but not always, and not completely? anyway, i just love lanalyzing her in the head i guess

you know i have a friend or (three) that specifically do not trust any girl that they find to be beautiful? i'm not saying that they're right or wrong i'm just saying i have them. one of them is a guy and has insecurities about them cheating, the other two are girls (ENFP, ENTJ) and they just assume that they're manipulative or conniving or at least more likely to be so. i don't think thats an uncommon thing. everyone has insecurities, even lana. especially lana? seems to me like pretty girls can sometimes be the most insecure. but also the most confident. or at least the ones i've known (and known of). see how there's already an inherent contradiction that's probably confusing to her and those around her? given that she has those 'abilities' to see the world, eat cake, see what other people don't -- she probably also sees the darker sides of humanity too. she probably sees (and is the target of) other people's insecurities because she inadvertently draws them out. she's smart, quiet, and beautiful; i imagine that a combination like that would draw very strange / very pessimistic / very cautionary 'energy' from (some, but not all) people. over the course of 27 (?) years though, that number of negative interactions or realizations probably adds up. she's probably internalized that energy and its probably made her feel guilty, or something?

"i don't wanna think i'm wrong -- just for feeling pretty"

she's probably all defensive / adolescent / emo cause she's consistently being ~misunderstood by the world and the (american) public. funny that this is the 2nd gramma quote that's been relevant to this discussion. maybe that's the song that's most true and most personal for her, like trailerparkdarling said. i mean ... there are like 7 (?) videos. not sure if i'm just building up a house of cards in my head lmao

Lana comes across as someone who has no interest in being perceived a certain way in her private life. She's all about the music and image that is "Lana Del Rey" the singer, outside of that i honestly think she rolls her eyes and says whatever she wants based on her mood and time of month. Maybe that comes from the fact that media got so personal with her when they attacked her, or maybe she just doesn't give a fuck, but fans tend to feel connections to their idols and expect them to be like their best friends in high school ect. I don't really, she could give an interview and tell us all that she is infact from another planet and enjoys eating human babies and i'd still buy her album if it was well made, which initially what we are all here for isn't it, the music. Her personality or how she conducts herself should always come second to that, at least it does to me. I don't need to want to hang out with her to be a fan.

I feel that the interviewer was pretty irrelevant when it came to the choice of questions. I understand that it's her job to get information out of Lana but for "Electronic Beats" magazine, is Lana's stance on politics and feminism really that important to know?

"To me, [Ride] felt so ‘wrong’ on so many levels"

"Do you have opinions on healthcare reform or . . ."

"And what do you think of the Church sex scandals"

I mean she's just completed a tour, been featured in Gatsby and she even played her new songs from her laptop (she wouldn't do that for anyone) and the interviewer didn't touch on any of those things (only a little for the new record but not merely enough). We know that Lana keeps her background to herself so all of this isn't new information to us. The interviewer was an idiot and Lana probably felt either really uncomfortable or put off. The tone of the conversation was pretty shit. Lana was finishing off the interviewer's questions because she probably wanted to get the hell outta there.

Fashion magazines talk about fashion and music magazines talk about music. Where would be an appropriate place to talk about Lana's past? Well, that's for Lana to decide and if she starts answering with simple yeses and nos then that's a cue to stop asking weirdass questions.

    You said it very well.

I don't think it's that she's stupid or playing a role as such, but more the fact that her mind works in the least academic way possible. Taking a step back, logically examinating facts and drawing a conclusion is just not the way she examines the world. Everything in Lanas world revolves around Lana, to the point that she can't make a statement about health care reforms without pointing back to herself and how she feels. In short she's good at talking about how she feels, senses and experiences the world through her filter = artist. A lot of artists talk bull when it comes to concrete, real world issues. Not because they don't care or are simple, but because they are way better at expressing how they feel.

I am in agreement with those who think this is an annoying, defensive, evasive, whiny interview. What bothers me though is not so much her “attitude” but how juvenile she can be.

Also, she seems to not really understand a lot of concepts and things that she’s asked about. For example, i don’t think she really knows what it means to be anti-feminist. I have never read anything from her about art, politics, or philosophy that gave me the impression she had anything to say on the matter. I wonder if she is as much of a simpleton/anti-intellectual/philistine, etc. as she comes across in interviews or if it’s an act. That’s not something i hold against her, i’m just making an observation (through my biased lens obviously). I still wonder if she has some sort of “personality disorder” (which i've wondered pretty much since day 1, so that is not something i'm drawing up because she was a bit erratic in this interview) or if she’s on a lot of antidepressants.

At any rate, i have a hard time finding anything engaging or interesting in her interviews. The more of them that i read/watch, the more i see her fitting into this pattern i’ve noticed in my life where the people whose music i really love are the ones who i’m least interested in as people (do any of you experience this too?), which is one reason why i have no interest in meeting any artists whose music i follow. BUT...this is also, i think, another testament to the potency of music, that it can allow me to take an interest in the lives of people who i’d otherwise have little to no interest in.

maybe she was already a bit on the defense before the interview even started, given that (like she says), this is the first american publication that she's done in a while. and it was done with a woman (w/ no profile picture). i'm pretty sure her whole ~anti me theory is like 70% female related. and to be fair, the interviewer did come off a bit condescending / short with her at the beginning (IMO). not sure how this was conducted, but i'm assuming it was over the phone where intonation can still play an anxiety provoking role. if i asked someone a question and they responded with a 'no . . .' i'd feel like i was being stabbed with a condescending needle

    'you think you're a gypsy'
'your music and your image often seem inseparable'
'because there does seem to be a disconnect between your public image and . . .'
'do you have opinions on healthcare reform, or . . . yeah? lets hear them'

and so on. i mean, i can't decide if i think the interviewer is being callous or if i appreciate (both) the line of questioning and the way in which she asked. even if i don't particularly love this side of lana, it was still a strong and (somewhat) interesting reaction. it shows (yet) another side of her personality. i think when lana feels backed into a corner with a heavy-handed line of questioning, she feels the need to wave her dick around cause she knows its the biggest one in the room. oh i had ~millions of shows to book. most people aren't as interesting or ~deep as barrie and i

as for having some kind of personality disorder (re: MBTI)? absolutely. and shades of many -- i'd say histrionic, narcissistic, and borderline for sure. so it must be hard for her; having people constantly trying to define her. trying to reconcile every facet of her being into one clearly defined... thing. these kinds of interviews are interesting for the reader since they're obviously (still) questioning her intellect, character, authenticity, etc... but for her, these kinds of questions must be extremely stressful. i empathize with her situation but i hope she reads this back and realizes that she comes off like an unlikeable bitch

still lmao that she mentions wanting to kill people. love her so much

Forgot to include this thought in my earlier post:

A lot of people have compared Lana to Holly Golightly, but she's more like Holly Golightly in reverse: a New Yorker of means masquerading as rural southern white trash rather than the other way around.

The ones I prefer the most are the ones that were cut from her last records or a couple that sound like Lana. I thought I was the only one that thought so.

Some of her earlier work sounds cute, but not as meaningful or polished as her newer stuff.

    @GeminiLanaFan

BTD should be remastered and include Young & Beautiful on it.

as to You made me love you- that would depend entirely on the contract Andrew Lloyd Webber signed as to whether or not it would be permissible

Still to this day don't understand why her record company refused to promote Young & Beautiful as a single so it stopped midway on the charts.
Had the record company allowed and fully promoted YB it would have been #1, but they chose not to. Remember- singles are almost always decided
by the record company and not the artist (and back then, the methodology was somewhat different than in 2018

Of course, had this been the mid-late 1960s, Lana would already have had more #1s than the Beatles and Elvis

In 2018, it is almost necessary to release a new track every week and then when album comes out have bundles so it propels the album to #1 on the charts

So I myself am hoping for both a new lp and also the never on album cd, perhaps mixed into a 1-2-3-4-5 cd set, all of which will be sold at the same time

    to be continued...
