It's sad how Lana stopped acknowledging Marina's existence after she released her generic album & flopped.

After the success of the original & beautiful NFR, I doubt Lana would even like to associate with her anymore now.

    Apocalypse trivia:

A Michael Langdon & Madison sex scene was deleted due to time restraints.

A gay sex scene (not w Michael) was deleted as it was too explicit for tv.

one of the rules of success is to be around creative successful people...and like lana says, "if you lie down with dogs, you'll get the fleas // be careful of the company you keep"

I am pretty disappointed in the direction Melanie decided to go music-wise, it was already risky for her to keep working on an aged concept, but I thought that she might still be able to make it work if she expanded on her sound a bit. Conceptually, the whole album/movie felt dull, like it had no deeper connection to the album other than just being a continuation of CB. The album sounds like crybaby if all the creativity of the lyrics and the production of that album were stripped away. K-12, as a whole, is just bland. the songs aren't terrible, and if this was released back when I was into her, I probably would have listened to them, but that just isn't enough to keep me interested anymore. Even though I don't listen to CB anymore, I still look back at what an amazing album that was, and I can't say the same about this one.

Some people here are excusing the mediocrity of the lyrics because it's to make them more suitable for the movie, but that's exactly what the problem is here: The fact that it's a movie reduces the quality of the music and the fact that it's an album reduces the quality of the movie. I know Melanie put a lot of effort into this and that it was a very ambitious project, and I admire that, but the bigger the project the easier it is to fuck something up.

the movie wasn't very good, but it's what you can expect from someone who isn't an experienced director or screenwriter. The visuals were beautiful though, and the choreo was pretty cute, I'll giver her that.

Its not a 100m dollar production.. it was a movie by a singer making her 2nd album, literally doing what the other girls can't. One of the most ambitious projects I've seen in pop music for a WHILE.

Fire Drill is one of my favourites and it's not even on the album

Yes but it's not among the best songs like some are saying.

the first video has the audience comments missing so I'd recommend the second link which just has the 1 & a half minutes missing in the beginning.

4  years and she just uses the same kind of metaphors and songwriting. Paired with the lifeless and uninspired production of the album, that really shows she just tried to reproduced CryBaby and forced a concept. Not something worth a 4 year long wait.
Haha, insulting someone out of nowhere because you don't share their opinion on a piece of music. This shows who's the dumb one here. Pathetic.

Ooh crybaby (a concept that has really aged like milk during its first era) is in school by now. Soooo deep, it's really beyond me.

Unpopular opinion but I think Venice bitch is suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper overrated.
The lyrics are not that good, her vocal delivery and the vocals melody is not really up there with her best moments and YES the track is 10 minutes long and has some pretty nice elements of production but I feel like it's really not going anywhere. It's long and stuff gets added up but it does not really feel like the song is just going on and on for the sake of it without any development.

Well .. the video has nice visuals but .. .that's it. I like how she chose the surfer scenes for FIILY and took the boat/ bar scenes for the Greatest but ... ugh. Like I expected it's cut in the most anticlimatic way ever. Pretty pic after pretty pic, but not taking th flow of the scong into consideration. It's ok with FIILY but a song as dramatic as The Greatest would have deserved something better.

I LOOOOVE the fake surfing scenes and the muscle dude (while being over the top) is suuuuper hot.

Venice Bitch could have easily been a 6:05 song.
Until that point the song actually develops and grows but everything after that just feels like it's going on for the sake of it.

MAC, Bartender, The Greatest & California - my holy trinity!

    My complains from the record:

    1) Why did Jack add a jingle bells instrument in How To Disappear? It has amazing lyrics & composition but that ruins it...
    2) the production on Hope is bland af (missing Nick. It could have had a magnificent ethereal production like Yes To Heaven or Fine Chine)
    3) the lyrical change in BAR annoys me ugh
    4) Venice Bitch should have been the closing track of the album.

These are my ONLY complains from the album. Other than this the alboom is purrrrfect. It's cohesive & it has a vision.

[Off topic but what is the highest quality of the Best American Record Demo that we have? Is it as good as the NFR version? Link me pls]
