Someone made a good point on another site. She’s selling out to make as much money as possible before going independent. She’s a smart business woman. 

part of me thinks she's going to pull a frank ocean and release this album to wrap up her atlantic contract then drop another one independently immediately after

I completely understand anyone who is suspicious of her and those lyrics but I don't think she's virtue signalling; I do think she should stop seemingly impulsively ranting on Instagram - I wish she just wouldn't give a fuck and just lived her life (harder said than done). In the context of those "rants" and subsequent criticism, her music/lyrics do take on a performative attitude. But it is through her music that she has always been able to convey her feelings and thoughts with clarity. And because I don't see the line re BLM as virtue signalling, I don't believe there's a need to change the way she writes, just the way she communicates on insta 

 
 

the NPR article read like a self-important writer who feels cool to be a part of the 'who knew she had it in her' crowd who bandwagon-hated her without giving a proper chance but is also desperate to save face by defending their belief that she was never a great/genuine artist until NFR, who then proudly took it upon themselves to write an expansive (meandering) (cherry-picked) analysis of her career using comparisons, examples, and conclusions that do not even make sense. like, they made the best out of an argument in which they are wrong, because the thesis statement was biased from conception. 
 
i mean really, i read that shit last night and had little idea what she was talking about through most of it. i am obviously biased as a lana stan but i am also well-educated and empathetic and i'm sorry sweetie but ms. powers should be writing for opinion or for buzzfeed, that was not a proper album review. and as lana pointed out, she made wild assumptions without even asking to interview her. wonder why

Somehow these singles are really reaffirming why NFR is so legendary. Not even in terms of direct influence on lorde, just in hearing elements of its sound elsewhere makes me appreciate how well Lana did it two years ago lol. NFR is like the BTD of the late 2010s/early 2020s, a brilliantly crafted seminal precursor/inspiration to a new string of alt-pop albums that adopt that sound, heralding a new paradigm in the genre etc.
 
I feel like we're definitely in the midst of this very particular chill/folky/surfy sparse sunshine scene of alt-pop music right now that people are gonna look back on in like five years and reminisce over the same way people look back to 2011-2014 and reminisce over albums like BTD, pure heroine, electra heart, etc
