I’ve just listened to this song for the first time in a while since it leaked and I’ve finally formed together my complete theory of its meaning. I believe this song is very influenced by Barrie, more specifically, his battle with depression. From Barrie’s lyrics, tweets, and dark influences I think it’s obvious that he is struggling, or at least has at some point in his life, struggled with depression.  Here’s my interpretation:

IMO, Black Beauty is definitely, definitely about Barrie (see here) as well as Is This Happiness. I think they both reflect Lana's struggle with trying to hold things together with Barrie.

    Misheard Lana Lyrics

Here is where we can post lyrics that we've misheard in Lana's songs.

Be sure to post the real lyric, too.

    I'll start:

In Diet Mountain Dew it says:

"There in his white Pontiac Heaven"

    I thought it said:

"Ridin' his white pony named Kevin"

    I know, embarrassing

Can't wait to read some of yours!

In National Anthem she says, "Keep me safe in his bell tower hotel"
And I always thought she said "Keep me safe in his will, time will hold tell"

Also in TIWMUG, it says "high heels in her hand". I always thought it said "flyers in her hand" and had this image of a drunk girl passing out flyers for something on the side of the road while Lana just leans against a chain link fence and smokes a cigarette..
It's a beautiful image, I tell you. It really is.

Is This Happiness and Flipside seem to be about this topic ... ITH is kind of the story about two writing artists, who break up cause they don't get along anymore. Also, there are a lot of FS has this "maybe we'll try it later again" topic, which fits some of her statements  about the "currently not together".

For the rest of the songs, I don't really think they are about the break-up-  they may mention one, but I don't think it's about the ending relationship with Barrie. I don't think EVERYTHING she does is completely autobiographic, in the end there could be things/feelings from her past as well as fictional stories she wants to tell.

Black Beauty in general could be about Barrie, but since it was written when they were still together, I don't think it's about a break up - reason.

Right? I can't imagine this including anything but upbeat DICWB type stuff. Maybe she's setting out to make a happy record after the Guardian controversy...

In my mind ITH is a far more superior track than Flipside. Everything from the melody to the lyrics has a haunting and bittersweet atmosphere. It conjures up so many emotions and moved me from the start much more than Flipside .
