Twin Peaks is a cult TV show created by David Lynch and Mark Frost that aired during the 90s. It is set in the eponymous fictional town and revovles around the investigation into Laura Palmer's murder, a seemingly innocent teenage girl who everybody loves but is later revealed to have been invovled with drugs and prostitution. Though very melodramatic, Twin Peaks is known for its surrealistic atmosphere and often disturbing scenes. Fire Walk with Me, the feature-length continuation of the show, has a completely different tone compared to it, being more unsettling, devoid of any similarities to soap operas, and portrays the final week of Laura's life.

I recently watched this series and was quite arrested, and considering that there is a new season coming this year, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread wherein to discuss it. Also, I am curious to hear - do you prefer the TV series or the film?

P.S. I cannot begin to describe how the title sequence makes me feel.

Gods & Monsters with the "L.A. L.A." intro, Bel Air, all the scenes of L.A. through out the film. How could Tropico NOT be a reference to Los Angeles? I know she has said before that she just likes certain words that are "heavenly" and "tropical" and what not, but I could totally see her stumbling over some reference to the old neighbourhood and liking it, maybe just from walking around in the area.

When the title Tropico first surfaced, there was a lot of speculation about where the name came from. People wondered if it had anything to do with a video game of the same name. Or if it was a reference to the Pat Benatar album.

I just assumed it was a word Lana came up with independently, or perhaps that she forgot Pat Benatar's album was where the word first entered her mind. (After all, she does often reference others' lyrics and album titles seemingly unconsciously. See: Lust for Life.) At any rate, I never gave it much thought after the release of the film, which I watched a grand total of two times (three if you count searching through it for screenshots for this thread).

But recently I've developed a possible theory about where the name may have come from that I don't recall seeing discussed on the forum before (though maybe I just missed it):

Tropico is/was the name of a real place in California. Now just a neighborhood in Glendale, CA and Los Angeles' Atwater Village, it was once incorporated as an independent city from 1911 until 1918 when the upper half merged with Glendale and the lower half merged with Los Angeles.

Today, there seem to be only a few references to the name of the city that once was: a post office, a seedy motel, a new apartment project, an old folks' home.

Here are links to several pages about "the lost city of Tropico":

https://calisphere.org/search/?q=tropico (There's probably some great cover/fan art material in some of the PDFs here.)

Tropico was also home to Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where Walt Disney and many old Hollywood celebrities are buried or have their ashes interred.

I have no idea if Lana is aware of any of this history-- given her proximity to it I suspect it may have inspired the name either way-- but it is certainly in keeping with themes in her work of old Hollywood and lost Americana.

Feel free to post anything else interesting you find about the city of Tropico.

    I didn't see a thread made for this -
Yesterday, Lana was hanging out with jeweler Ice Rock who claimed "BIG things are happening" (rumored to be a photoshoot) & she sang a lullaby to the baby of Jillian Yasuda.

  22. Summersault liked a post in a topic by evilentity in Lust For Life Album Trailer!
Lana talked about this album being "political". But from this album trailer and the lyrics to "Love", I get that sense that while she might employ some political imagery (like Mt. Rushmore crumbling, Lady Liberty's flame snuffed out) in her videos, aside from a few vague platitudes (like "signals crossing can get confusing", "it's enough just to make you go crazy", "seen so much you could get the blues") her lyrics will be fundamentally escapist.

I sincerely hope not. When she manages to avoid cliche, like on QOTGS for instance, she can depict broken-down America very evocatively. She needn't pen an anthem like "For You" (her most political song), but I would love to see her get very political on this album, but through story-telling, painting a picture.

I'd also love to see it from a standpoint of personal and artistic growth. Despite whatever withering media criticism she may have endured, Lana has led a pretty privileged life and her music seems like escapist fantasy even when grounded in some reality. I would like to see some lyric-writing that is rooted in the real world even if spun from whole cloth.

I'm shook. This was somehow incredibly tacky, endearing and intriguing at the same time, true Lana style. As someone else said: Let's hope she meant soon and not SOON.

Just to spoil the mood I did find her a little annoying with that "these are dark and trying times blah blah but I'm an ~artist~ so I get to isolate myself and make music, but don't you worry kids" vibe she had going on

I remember everyone was worried that she'd lose her Lana-ness with a political album but her answer to world struggles is just so Lana Still the escapist queen, Yayo to 2017, dark trailer park to intergalactic possibilities
