Norman Fucking Rockwell - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
GeminiLanaFan replied to Elle's topic in Post-Release Threads
LFL has divided opinions as well. HM wasn’t a darling at first for many. We mostly agree with all of her albums before HM. But the « new Lana » doesn’t please everyone (I don’t see it as « new Lana » as much as growth and being less raw). -
Bastille releases this Friday an extension to their June LP « Doom Days », which will contain demos, new songs, rearranged songs (with orchestra) and fan favourites that didn’t make it to earlier LPs. I wish she did the same with all of her albums, including NFR. Didn’t she say there were « Shagrila-esque » songs from the NFR sessions?

I see the praise she is receiving these days as « the critics finally caught up to what we already know », in most cases. The tide began shifting for some with UV, but mostly with HM and LFL. They were finally « getting her ». I get the criticisms she received when she first came out, with BTD: she was an alien and one that was so different from the others that they questioned if she was legit (harshly so). The acclaim for NFR just makes me happy that they finally recognize her talent. -

I get that we all have our own taste and prefer certain albums over others, and I certainly don't always agree with critics, but to see NFR as boring and badly produced, I mean... The critical acclaim has just exploded, with the end-of-year reviews. It truly is her magnum opus, at least in the public sphere. I took a short break from it, over the last weeks, but came back to it this week. And man! What an album to come back to! The high notes of the title track just haunt me. Venice Bitch still transcends me when I drive (that progression!!!). I am tired as fuck, so The Greatest is just the most empowering song about depression ever. And California?!? It's the prayer I'm singing myself and my BF, who is just as tired as I am. Bartender just calms me down so much. Hope is just so heartbreaking in the winter. And when she sings «My baby used to dance underneath my architecture», I just can't help but fall in love with this song all over again. -

is it me or she is super quiet about that show? -
I don't think it sucks per se, but it's likely it will deceive because our expectations are sky-high for it. it's a one-take song, it's acoustic... it might be too simple to please us on the fist listen. Unless she adds up a couple of electric guitar / synth outro to it...

I have a theory for you, and I might be completely wrong about it, but do you feel NFR is a summer / end of summer album and it might be why you don't listen to it that much? I'm from Canada, I love NFR, but November has been so fracking cold that the songs don't impact me as much?!?! To me, NFR really is a transition album (August-September- October) and I don't connect to it as much as I used to. Or maybe it's just that I'm taking a bit of a break from all things Lana (the pre-release thread was so fucking intense and long and eventless that I might still be tired of it). -

Just a nomination in the major categories is such an achievement at this point. Congrats!!! -

To me, BTD can be any season. Paradise rings fall to me. All the others are summer albums, just not the same moment of that season: UV is a dark hot summer, HM is just before fall (Nothing gold can stay...), LFL is warm spring going into hot summer (really fits my mood in that season; super optimistic in spring and then realize summer is just another season with its deceptions), and NFR is August going into fall. -

Agreed! I also hear a lot of Swan Song 2.0 in Bartender as well. -

UV's video works for me... It's super vintage/homemade and intimate, as if you had found a forgotten 8mm film from a doomed mariage. VB's video ain't the best either, not much going on, but it works better than MAC's, I think... -

Saw on a FB Lana group that the triple video was scrapped (with the info that WHF was not the title of the next album). Don't know if it's true, but either way, if she decides it's too bad to show, I'm gonna believe her lol. Her HM video was really dull, the MAC video is really a stain on her videography.... -

Venice Bitch is one of the three songs from NFR where the lyrics create a mood rather than tell a story (the other 2 being Fuck It I Love You and Cinnamon Girl). That song is genius and innovative for her for the musical take-off. I just get totally lost in the musical part when I drive. Plus the trippy California vibes are just quintessential Lana. To me, it’s one for the best songs on NFR and one of the best arguments for AOTY Grammy nom. This is also where she earns her alternative title when categorizing her music. -
Anything is possible at this point, because she didn't say much about what it would sound like (I know, it's always changing and it's always to be taken with a grain of salt, even if she said it would be in the vein of NFR). If the record is guitar-based (or at least a portion of it): Yosemite, I Might Be Stupid for Being so Happy, maybe Hey Blue Baby. Roses Bloom For You... it sounded beautiful, but I'm having a hard time seeing it on an actual original album. Maybe on a collection of unreleased songs, but on LDR7? Not so sure. But hey, I never thought Doin' Time and TNBAR would end up on NFR, so... I wonder what the Shangri-la-esque songs left out of NFR sound like...
-
I'm not sure she could «top» NFR with WHF. It's going to be tough, with the critical acclaim of this record. But it's Lana we're talking here and who knows? However, she never released a single album that disappointed or that wasn't consistent (yes, even LFL). Some records were better than others, it's true, but none was bad. She is hardworking and she won't put out a half-finished project.
-
I'm curious to see how her relationship with Sean-the-cop and its future will influence her writing for WHF. If they are still together when it's released, maybe we'll finally have a bunch of tracks on the record that will be about falling in love (and she might finally be happy enough to include fucking Yosemite)

Woah, some of you really have a very fine ear to have heard all of that! Is it the same on all of her albums or just this one? To me, NFR! is what she wanted LFL to be in the first place. I really love LFL, love how «messy» it is (I hear diverse, to be quite frank), because it was a messy era of her life, but NFR feels like this is what she first intended for LFL: a singer-songwriter / acoustic-ish sound.
