New Version of NFR to be released January 10th
takeitdoen replied to DinahLee's topic in New Releases
Wouldn't it just be fixing up the mixing in Fuck It I Love You? Otherwise a sampling thing maybe from the Cinnamon Girl outro. GIVE US BONUS ACOUSTIC TRACKS LANA -
Norman Fucking Rockwell - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

Yes, absolutely! For everything, Lana and other artists. Original Broadway Cast recordings, Florence and the Machine records, Cirque du Soleil albums, self-created EPs by indie artists, Disney soundtracks etc etc. They all have their production styles, mixing and fuck ups that really interest me and I always wonder why they can't be polished/fixed or rectified. I'm still really baffled that people on this site think that enjoying the record and acknowledging the faults are mutually exclusive? My background: Sound design (for theatre), production aficionado, musician. -
Back when I was a scrub I always confused 'White Mustang' with 'Heroin' since the starts are so similar in their chord progression, in addition to the minimal instrumental. I also used to always confuse 'Black Beauty' with 'Sad Girl' on their choruses since you could basically sing them interchangeably.

She definitely would have done #4!

Holy shit I have no idea, although I usually keep track (last year my first song was 'Be Prepared' lol). I actually think: Last song in 2018: The Next Best American Record by Lana del Rey First song in 2019: Astronaut (Something About You Love) by Mansionair

Given her weird Instagram caption ('I feel sorry for Norm's little sister' or something along those lines) and the low key approach to the release I think she is hoping to mitigate any criticism for her next album by doing this lo-fi release. It's going to be almost impossible to maintain or topple the acclaim from NFR onto her next major work unless it's batshit crazy different. I think this is going to act sort of like a speed bump between NFR and WHF - for this spoken word album, how could anyone complain about this release when it seems to be very spur of the moment, presumably very cheap, and low effort album when that's how she's told everyone it will be? It'll basically absolve her from criticism and will be just considered a weird side project, and her following album will be benchmarked to 'weird but kooky lo-fi poetry album', thus looking infinitely more sophisticated. It'll also be a whole body of work away from NFR!

Can you IMAGINE if she randomly told us she liked the Cats movie??? All her awful decisions and preferences sure would make sense.

If she does overlay it, that's cool I'm sure we'll love it. But if she doesn't, we can make some super fuckin cool stuff from it. A true DIY project! -

I CAN'T WAIT. I also can't wait to hear what creations will be made out of it. How good is this version of Florence reading William Blake's poetry over an original score. OOF. THE ART THAT WILL BE MADE. -
Cinnamon Girl versus Happiness is a Butterfly
takeitdoen replied to Rorman Nockwell's topic in Lana Thoughts
Both have positives and negatives, but between the two I'd go with Cinnamon Girl, if only for the thrilling violence in its lyrics. "Kerosene in my hands / you make me mad, I'm fire again" Ooof. So unhinged, urgent, and precarious. They're such a great contrast to how innocuous the opening lyrics are. Also instrumentally it is more interesting than Happiness is a Butt. The drop between the intro into the second verse is one of the most satisfying points on the album, and then you have the sheer awesomeness of this weird apocalyptic outro. It could do with a bit more intensity and bass, but I can hear the car breaking to a stop as that piano twinkles on top. Gr8 topic. -

Summer is finally hitting in Melbourne, and NFR is a big treat to listen to. Listening to Love Song when trees are becoming silhouettes amongst the sunset is so gorgeous. And the true appreciation of Venice Bitch has finally made it to me - the weather is hot and it's making me nostalgic of 2019 already! T E L L U S -

It certainly helps. I remember when I was a new fan I was baffled how poorly recorded UV was, and certain songs on LFL were totally unpalatable . . . BPBP and TNC ugh. -
I can't find a stream of it anywhere online but this version has a 'string quartet' throughout and a big harmonica-esque sounding solo in the middle.

Has everyone noticed the horrible clipping in the instrumental track on Lucky Ones? 3:11. @ you hearing this?

Have I even answered this before?? Get ready for my tastelessness: Born to Die Ultraviolence Normal FUCKING Rockwell! Honeymoon Lust for Life AKA Factors that contributed to this order: How much I listen to them, how dramatic they are, how much I hate Pretty When You Cry, how useful they are for stage, lyrics, nostalgic and emotional attachment, vocal delivery, production, album visuals, how much Dan Heath is in the album, how hilarious the album title is, how commercially available albums are, how bad Coachella is.

Also - NFR is Album of the Year for The Music (Australian street-press publication)! https://themusic.com.au/news/the-music-writers-poll-2019-album-of-the-year-lauren-baxter/9tTi6Ovq7ew/24-12-19/ Sure - but I wouldn't go and discuss NFR anywhere else but this thread. Which is what I responded to when you asked why people were posting here instead of "LDR7 pre-release thread or any other thread." This is literally the post-release discussion thread where people want to chat about the album. Although yes, I think we get that certain people are set in their camps now. Ps what is ONFRH? (only Norman Fucking Rockwell haters?) I'd love Lana to win the Grammy for this album! The more people realise her genius, the better. I really am hoping she will win. But it'd be a bit like Natalie Portman winning an Oscar for Black Swan, when she should have won one for Closer. By which I mean, I think there are other entries in her body of work more worthy of what is supposed to be highest distinction in the musical field. I am more upset that she missed out on accolades for those, which are now retroactively being lauded as landmark works that altered pop music in the 2010s. I'm not mad. NFR is a banger and I listen to it regularly, but it does miss the hallmarks of her OG work. I'm sure a swathe of other members here can (and will) carry this baton on in discussion for me. Also as a side note, it's really detrimental to any form of intelligent conversation to say someone must be an expert in a field to have their opinions in it validated. I am not a professional singer, but I can tell when someone is singing out of tune. I also don't run a country, but I can have a say on issues like climate change. As I mentioned in another thread earlier today, art is subjective and just because you're a 'professional' in the industry doesn't mean you're wholeheartedly correct. Throughout history "professional music critics" have dismissed ground breaking works including Carmen, Born to Die, The Rite of Spring and Les Misérables, in consideration of what the zeitgeist is and theorising how GP would react against the standard of the time. Looking back they're hilariously out of touch, soooo don't just rely on what critics say at the time although there is a grain of truth in everything! TL;DR - I love the album even with its flaws! I think other albums were more deserving, but I want Lana to win AOTY and get that praise! I want everyone to know about Lana and acknowledge how great she is. Critics don't mean shittttt (although they are lovely additions). -
Maaaaate, art is subjective. No one here is solely criticising Lana's work because it's fun, it's being criticised because people have differing tastes and a high standard of what she is able to achieve as an artist. If you blindly praise everything and don't discern between what is quality and what isn't, all you're doing is eroding away your integrity and you'll have no credibility to stand on when you praise something that is an actual accomplishment. Explaining she produced a low quality product because she got dumped and didn't feel like putting any effort into the video is excusing a level of laziness that I don't want to see from my favourite artist. This is reflected by the lack of fanfare, the video view count being very low, and the general consensus of users on Lanaboards, the most wonderful place in all the world where every day is magical. The Greatness/FIILY has a similar vibe of nothingness but it is beautifully shot and produced - it has variation in locations, tonal changes and facial expressions gradually changing, and rose tinted nostalgia for the past and intertextual references from her back catalogue. Whereas the latest trio seem unrelated and made from footage that now encompasses FIVE music videos . . . happy to chat more about it in the appropriate release thread! Bringing it back to LDR7, yeah, we are laughing a bit but yeah, I really hope the quality lifts back. I know Lana was taken aback to hear that her fans still wanted high quality videos, but the images she creates really make a big impact. When I was directing an actress I was super excited that NFR was coming out and we chatted at length - she said she refers to Blue Jeans MV as a stimulus for so many of her powerful characters and it honestly made me so happy to hear that that impact has lived on.

I can't believe I missed out writing in french. SACRED BLUE! TIENS~! California is the MVP for the album. But all the conversation in this thread is about NFR, either the acclaim, the production or our opinions! I will talk about Jack's sloppy production on the new album when the time comes!
